Book The Digest of Justinian Volume 3

Download or read book The Digest of Justinian Volume 3 written by Alan Watson and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2011-06-24 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Justinian became sole ruler of the Byzantine Empire in A.D. 527, he ordered the preparation of three compilations of Roman law that together formed the Corpus Juris Civilis. These works have become known individually as the Code, which collected the legal pronouncements of the Roman emperors, the Institutes, an elementary student's textbook, and the Digest, by far the largest and most highly prized of the three compilations. The Digest was assembled by a team of sixteen academic lawyers commissioned by Justinian in 533 to cull everything of value from earlier Roman law. It was for centuries the focal point of legal education in the West and remains today an unprecedented collection of the commentaries of Roman jurists on the civil law. Commissioned by the Commonwealth Fund in 1978, Alan Watson assembled a team of thirty specialists to produce this magisterial translation, which was first completed and published in 1985 with Theodor Mommsen's Latin text of 1878 on facing pages. This paperback edition presents a corrected English-language text alone, with an introduction by Alan Watson. Book God Glory and Gold Journey to the Conquest of the Incas The Quest

This book was released on 2012-11 with total page 741 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long, improbable journey to the Conquest of the Incas is an incredible, modern story. While the Inca Empire was expanding along the Pacific coast of South America, the backward Kingdom of Castile and Leon was mired in political intrigue. This is a story of courage, luck, colossal misjudgments and soaring ambition by entrepreneurs who would lead a culture clash ending in the fall of the Inca Empire and the rise of the Spanish Empire that lasted two hundred years due to Inca treasure. All the players sought the same things: independence, security, honor, wealth and glory. Few achieved their goals in any lasting sense but many displayed the indomitable spirit of motivated visionaries. This is their story.

Book Heir S Journey of Promise

Download or read book Heir S Journey of Promise written by David O. Daulton and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2014-07-25 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Very often, the Father gives to His children special presents! They are given, along with thousands of other blessings, on a daily basis, and if we are truly honest with ourselves and look at these presents, we will be all the more grateful! This is an account based on the facts presented in the Bible, and largely on the prophetic Scriptures. I realize that many in the churchthose who claim to be Christianswill not allow themselves to believe on these Scriptures. This is heartbreaking, for I believe this will be to their great harm! This book will try to convince the reading Christian of how truly dear he or she is to the Father, and how He longs for us to be close to Him in His Son. (And no, it isnt inspired, but God did through His Word turn the lights on!) This is more than a bedtime story for children of all ages. My hope is that it will be a great encouragementfor though we may grow a bit weary in our journey, we still enjoy the good fight. We are very dear to the One who has already won it, and He looks forward to greeting us on the other side . . . And men everywhere should seek Him with a new zeal, for He will soon rise to shake violently the earth! Even so, come Lord Jesus!

Then the son of the king's sister/wife, also named Ramesses, will become Crown Prince and all Tiye's ambitions will lie in ruins. All Tiye's hopes are pinned on this last son of hers, but Ramesses III refuses to consider him as a potential successor, despite the Crown Prince's failing health. Unless Tiye can change the king's mind through charm or coercion, her sons will forever be excluded from the throne of Egypt.

Book excerpt: Why did migrants from southern Portugal choose Argentina instead of following the traditional path to Brazil? Starting with this question, this book explores how, at the turn of the twentieth century, rural Europeans developed distinctive circuits of transatlantic labor migration linked to diverse immigrant communities in the Americas. It looks at transoceanic moves in the larger context of migration systems, examining their connections and the crucial role of social networks in migrants geographic mobility and adaptation. Combining regional and local perspectives on both sides of the Atlantic, Chains of Gold provides a vivid account of the trajectories of migrant men and women as they moved from rural Portugal to contrasting places of settlement in the Argentine pampas and Patagonia.
