Book Heine s Prose Classic Reprint

Download or read book Heine s Prose Classic Reprint written by Heinrich Heine and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-16 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heine's Prose Heine's journey to Italy was not an epoch in the develop ment of his art, as was a similar period in Goethe's career. His style had been formed on different models from the stand ards now about him, nor was his interest in the Classic past as keen as his sympathy for the living present. In his book, Italien, Heine describes his journey as it was made, from Munich by way of Innsbruck to Trient, thence to Verona and Milan, over the battlefield of Marengo to Genoa. And finally by way of Leghorn to the Baths of Lucca. The Italian Sketches do not differ in character from the earlier Pictures of Travel, save for their increased boldness in the cause of human liberty, and greater recklessness in their violation of what conventionally seemed sacred and unassailable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prose Writings of Heinrich Heine: Edited, With an Introduction, by Havelock Ellis With his uncle's help he studied law at Bonn, Gottingen and Berlin. At Berlin he fell under the dominant influence of Hegel, the vanquisher of the romantic school of which Schelling was the philosophic representative. Heine afterwards referred to this period as that in which he herded swine with the Hegelians it is certain that Hegel exerted great and perma nent influence over him. At Berlin, in 1821, appeared his first volume of poems, and then he began to take his true place. At this period Heine is described as a good-natured and gentle youth, but reserved, not caring to show his emotions. He was of middle height and slender, with rather long light brown hair (in childhood it was red, and he was called Rother Harry) framing the pale and beardless oval face, the bright blue short-sighted eyes, the Greek nose, the high cheek-bones, the large mouth, the full - half cynical, half sensual - lips. He was not a typical German; like Goethe, he never smoked; he disliked beer, and until he went to Paris he had never tasted sauerkraut. Book The Harz Journey and Selected Prose

Download or read book The Harz Journey and Selected Prose written by Heinrich Heine and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2006-06-29 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A poet whose verse inspired music by Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn and Brahms, Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) was in his lifetime equally admired for his elegant prose. This collection charts the development of that prose, beginning with three meditative works from the Travel Pictures, inspired by Heine's journeys as a young man to Lucca, Venice and the Harz Mountains. Exploring the development of spirituality, the later On the History of Religion and Philosophy in Germany spans the earliest religious beliefs of the Germanic people to the philosophy of Hegel, and warns with startling force of the dangers of yielding to 'primeval Germanic paganism'. Finally, the Memoirs consider Heine's Jewish heritage and describe his early childhood. As rich in humour, satire, lyricism and anger as his greatest poems, together the pieces offer a fascinating insight into a brilliant and prophetic mind.
