Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hegel's Doctrine of Formal Logic: Being a Translation of the First, Section of the Subjective Logic Formal logic is the subject-matter of the first section of Hegel's Subjective Logik. The Subjective Logik itself constitutes the second part, or the third book, of the Wissenschcift der Logiky written while Hegel was rector of the gymnasium at Nuremberg. When a youthful student is told without further explanation that the philosophy of Hegel places the absolute truth in logical thought, he naturally proceeds to put two and two together in a mechanical sort of way. One pigeon-hole of his mental repository furnishes him with the information that the absolute truth is the ultimate ground and explanation of this universe of things. Under another mental heading he finds that logical thought consists for the most part in extracting from propositions and pairs of propositions all their legitimate implications and equivalents. Book Logical and Philosophical Papers 1909 13

Download or read book Logical and Philosophical Papers 1909 13 written by Bertrand Russell and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The years covered by this volume of the Collected Papers of Bertrand Russell were among the most productive, philosophically speaking, of Russell's entire career. In addition to the papers reprinted here, he bought Principia Mathematica to its finished form and wrote The Problems of Philosophy, Theory of Knowledge and Knowledge of the External World. In October 1910 he began teaching at Cambridge, having accepted an appointment as lecturer in logic and the principles of mathematics at Trinity College for a term of five years. A year later Ludwig Wittgenstein began to attend his lectures. Within a few months he was influencing Russell's philosophical thinking as much as, or more than, Russell was influencing his.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume represents the proceedings of the Marquette Hegel Symposium, held at Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on June 2-5, 1970. The Symposium, celebrating the two-hundredth annivers ary of Hegel's birth, was presented under the combined sponsorship of the Philosophy Department of Marquette University, the American Coun cil of Learned Societies, and the Johnson Foundation of Racine, Wiscon sin. Its general theme embraced not only specific topics of interest in con temporary Hegel studies, but also the wider aspects of the influences and impact of Hegel's thought upon contemporary philosophical, political, and social problems. Principal contributors and panelists were selected for their scholarly achievements in Hegel studies and also in keeping with the broad view of the Hegelian legacy in current thought. All sessions of the Symposium were plenary, and designed for maximum discussion and in terchange among participants. The Symposium Committee regrets that it has not been feasible to incorporate the transcript of the discussions (ex cept for the round-table discussion on editing and translating Hegel) into this volume. The papers presented in each day's sessions are published here with editorial changes and corrections made by their respective authors. The papers by Professors Otto Poggeler and Eric Weil were originally trans lated by members of our Committee: the present versions incorporate many changes and corrections made by their authors. The comments on each paper were brought into their present form only after the Symposium, and in the light of the discussions which took place during it.

Book Three American Hegels

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ryan J. Johnson
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield

Download or read book Three American Hegels written by Ryan J. Johnson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-09-17 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three American Hegels explores Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel’s influence on three seminal, yet overlooked, philosophers: Henry C. Brokmeyer, Horace Williams, and John William Miller. Each of them was, in his own way, both an apprentice of Hegel and a true American original: Brokmeyer, the backwoods translator of Hegel; Williams, the mentor of Southern Hegelianism; Williams, the Hegelian teacher of democracy. Until now, their influence on the one school of philosophy that is distinctly grounded in the U.S. experience—pragmatism—has been overlooked, along with the intellectual history of how their contributions developed. Such neglect has resulted in an underestimation of the role that the theories of Hegel played in the development of American philosophy. To unearth these formative yet forgotten works and influences, Johnson explores their respective untapped archives and unearths a three-generation story of a Hegel that is thoroughly practical, concrete, and alive.

Book Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel The Science of Logic

Download or read book Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel The Science of Logic written by Georg Wilhelm Fredrich Hegel and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-08-19 with total page 865 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This translation of The Science of Logic (also known as 'Greater Logic') includes the revised Book I (1832), Book II (1813) and Book III (1816). Recent research has given us a detailed picture of the process that led Hegel to his final conception of the System and of the place of the Logic within it. We now understand how and why Hegel distanced himself from Schelling, how radical this break with his early mentor was, and to what extent it entailed a return (but with a difference) to Fichte and Kant. In the introduction to the volume, George Di Giovanni presents in synoptic form the results of recent scholarship on the subject, and, while recognizing the fault lines in Hegel's System that allow opposite interpretations, argues that the Logic marks the end of classical metaphysics. The translation is accompanied by a full apparatus of historical and explanatory notes.
