Book Hegel and Modern Society

    Book Details:
  • Author : Charles Taylor
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2015-10-06
  • ISBN : 1316425371
  • Pages : 193 pages

Download or read book Hegel and Modern Society written by Charles Taylor and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-06 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This rich study explores the elements of Hegel's social and political thought that are most relevant to our society today. Combating the prevailing post-World War II stereotype of Hegel as a proto-fascist, Charles Taylor argues that Hegel aimed not to deny the rights of individuality but to synthesise them with the intrinsic good of community membership. Hegel's goal of a society of free individuals whose social activity is expressive of who they are seems an even more distant goal now, and Taylor's discussion has renewed relevance for our increasingly globalised and industrialised society. This classic work is presented in a fresh series livery for the twenty-first century with a specially commissioned new preface written by Frederick Neuhouser.

Book Hegel s Preface to the Phenomenology of Spirit

Download or read book Hegel s Preface to the Phenomenology of Spirit written by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-14 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a new translation, with running commentary, of what is perhaps the most important short piece of Hegel's writing. The Preface to Hegel's first major work, the Phenomenology of Spirit, lays the groundwork for all his other writing by explaining what is most innovative about Hegel's philosophy. This new translation combines readability with maximum precision, breaking Hegel's long sentences and simplifying their often complex structure. At the same time, it is more faithful to the original than any previous translation. The heart of the book is the detailed commentary, supported by an introductory essay. Together they offer a lucid and elegant explanation of the text and elucidate difficult issues in Hegel, making his claims and intentions intelligible to the beginner while offering interesting and original insights to the scholar and advanced student. The commentary often goes beyond the particular phrase in the text to provide systematic context and explain related topics in Hegel and his predecessors (including Kant, Spinoza, and Aristotle, as well as Fichte, Schelling, Hölderlin, and others). The commentator refrains from playing down (as many interpreters do today) those aspects of Hegel's thought that are less acceptable in our time, and abstains from mixing his own philosophical preferences with his reading of Hegel's text. His approach is faithful to the historical Hegel while reconstructing Hegel's ideas within their own context.

Book excerpt: The works of German thinker Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel represent the apex of German classical philosophy. It was Hegel who pounded out the dialectical methodology that shaped the doctrine of idealism into a fully formed and deeply thought-out philosophical system. The book includes the following of Hegel’s works: The Phenomenology of Spirit The Logic of Hegel Hegel’s Philosophy of Mind Elements of the Philosophy of Right The Philosophy of Fine Art The Philosophy of History Lectures on the History of Philosophy Lectures on the Proofs of the Existence of God

Book G W F Hegel

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael Baur
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2015-05-01
  • ISBN : 1317591690
  • Pages : 265 pages

Download or read book G W F Hegel written by Michael Baur and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thought of G. W. F. Hegel (1770 -1831) has had a deep and lasting influence on a wide range of philosophical, political, religious, aesthetic, cultural and scientific movements. But, despite the far-reaching importance of Hegel's thought, there is often a great deal of confusion about what he actually said or believed. G. W. F. Hegel: Key Concepts provides an accessible introduction to both Hegel's thought and Hegel-inspired philosophy in general, demonstrating how his concepts were understood, adopted and critically transformed by later thinkers. The first section of the book covers the principal philosophical themes in Hegel's system: epistemology, metaphysics, philosophy of mind, ethical theory, political philosophy, philosophy of nature, philosophy of art, philosophy of religion, philosophy of history and theory of the history of philosophy. The second section covers the main post-Hegelian movements in philosophy: Marxism, existentialism, pragmatism, analytic philosophy, hermeneutics and French poststructuralism. The breadth and depth of G. W. F. Hegel: Key Concepts makes it an invaluable introduction for philosophical beginners and a useful reference source for more advanced scholars and researchers.

Book Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel The Phenomenology of Spirit

Download or read book Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel The Phenomenology of Spirit written by Georg Wilhelm Fredrich Hegel and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit (1807) is one of the most influential texts in the history of modern philosophy. In it, Hegel proposed an arresting and novel picture of the relation of mind to world and of people to each other. Like Kant before him, Hegel offered up a systematic account of the nature of knowledge, the influence of society and history on claims to knowledge, and the social character of human agency itself. A bold new understanding of what, after Hegel, came to be called 'subjectivity' arose from this work, and it was instrumental in the formation of later philosophies, such as existentialism, Marxism, and American pragmatism, each of which reacted to Hegel's radical claims in different ways. This edition offers a new translation, an introduction, and glossaries to assist readers' understanding of this central text, and will be essential for scholars and students of Hegel.
