Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The springboard for this entire work is the verse, “When Christ who is our life shall appear, then shall we also appear with Him in glory,” (Colossians 3:4). Why should the Christian have a hope of heaven? What may be expected there? What is Christ’s role there right now and how will the Christian interact with Him before the throne of God? What does it mean that Christ is glorious, and how will his appearing usher in with great glory the heavenly state for all those who trust in him? Nothing has greater influence into a Christian’s practice here in this world than the serious consideration of our everlasting estate in the world to come— the glory and happiness which is prepared for the elect in Christ. The scope of this work is to discover to the Christian those unspeakable joys which are set before us, that we may press forward toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Love explains what is meant when Christ is said to be our life; second, what is meant when it says that Christ our life shall appear. And lastly, what is meant that we will also appear with him in glory. These are his main ideas in explaining heaven’s glory. Love shows that these words are quickening and encouraging having respect to the recompense of reward for the believers who will have such an entrance ministered unto them into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. So, what will heaven be like? This work answers that question almost exhaustively. This work is not a scan or facsimile, has been carefully transcribed by hand being made easy to read in modern English, and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Press and the People is the first full-length study of cheap print in early modern Scotland. It traces the production and distribution of ephemeral publications from the nation's first presses in the early sixteenth century through to the age of Burns in the late eighteenth. It explores the development of the Scottish book trade in general and the production of slight and popular texts in particular. Focusing on the means by which these works reached a wide audience, it illuminates the nature of their circulation in both urban and rural contexts. Specific chapters examine single-sheet imprints such as ballads and gallows speeches, newssheets and advertisements, as well as the little pamphlets that contained almanacs and devotional works, stories and songs. The book demonstrates just how much more of this literature was once printed than now survives and argues that Scotland had a much larger market for such material than has been appreciated. By illustrating the ways in which Scottish printers combined well-known titles from England with a distinctive repertoire of their own, The Press and the People transforms our understanding of popular literature in early modern Scotland and its contribution to British culture more widely.

Book The Puritan Literary Tradition

Download or read book The Puritan Literary Tradition written by Johanna Harris and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-07-09 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is meant by the Puritan literary tradition, and when did the idea of Puritan literature, as distinct from Puritan beliefs and practices, come into being? The answer is not straightforward. This volume addresses these questions by bringing together new research on a wide range of established and emerging literary subjects that help to articulate the Puritan literary tradition, including: political polemic and the performing arts; conversion and New-World narratives; individual and corporate life-writings; histories of exile and womens history; book history and the translation and circulation of Puritan literature abroad; Puritan epistolary networks; discourses of Puritan friendship; the historiography of Puritanism defined through editing and publishing; doctrinal controversy; and the history of emotions. This essay collection proposes that a Puritan literary tradition existed that was distinct from broader conceptions of early modern English and Protestant traditions and offers a nuanced account of the distinct and variegated contribution that Puritanism has made to the construction of literature as a concept in English. It ranges from the late sixteenth through to the nineteenth century, and spans British, European, and American Puritan cultures. It offers new analyses of well-known Puritan writers such as Anne Bradstreet, John Bunyan, Richard Baxter, and John Milton, as well as less familiar figures, such as Mary Rowlandson and Joseph Hussey, and writers less often associated with Puritanism, such as Andrew Marvell and Aphra Behn.

Book Erroneous and Schismatical Opinions The Question of Orthodoxy regarding the Theology of Hanserd Knollys c 1599 1691

Download or read book Erroneous and Schismatical Opinions The Question of Orthodoxy regarding the Theology of Hanserd Knollys c 1599 1691 written by Barry Howson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: England in the mid-seventeenth-century saw the emergence of numerous religious sects, one of which were the Calvinistic Baptists. During this revolutionary era this group was often accused of heresy by their Reformed contemporaries. At that time Hanserd Knollys, one of the key spokesmen for this body, was personally charged with holding heterodox beliefs, in particular, Antinomianism, Anabaptism and Fifth Monarchism. In addition, subsequent historians have been compelled to defend Knollys against the charge of hyper-Calvinism. All of these charges are serious, and consequently bring into question Knollys' basic orthodoxy. This book systematically examines each of these charges against Knollys by looking at them in their broader historical context, and then comprehensively examining them from Knollys' writings to determine if they are indeed valid. Along the way Knollys' soteriology, ecclesiology and eschatology receive vital and needed elucidation.
