Book excerpt: This book is a spiritual collection of short stories, poetry, true stories, and songs I have written. I write only the words because I dont know how to write music, so I sing them as specials in church because I know how I think they should sound. When you see a song, try writing the music yourself. It can be a rewarding experience. If you write music for some of the songs, you record them, and they are successful, please give me a little credit. If you think you would like to try writing, do so. Words are only a concept in the mind until you share them. I hope that you enjoy this book and that it gives you a sense of peace and joy.

Download or read book Imagining Heaven in the Middle Ages written by Jan S. Emerson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medieval attempts to capture a glimpse of heaven range from the ethereal to the mundane, utilizing media as diverse as maps, cathedrals, songs, treatises, poems, visions and sewer systems. Heaven was at once the goal of the individual Christian life and the end of the cosmic plan. It was, simply stated, perfection. But interpretations varied from the traditional to the dangerously unique as artists and authors, theologians and visionaries struggled to define that perfection. Depending on the source, heaven's attributes vary from height to depth, darkness to light, silence to symphony; the souls within it from activity to passivity, experience to essence, participation to distant admiration. Questions addressed in this anthology include: Are erotic and spiritual love mutually exclusive? Does the soul's happiness depend on the resurrection of the body? What will be the nature of the transfigured body? Will it retain its gender? Will it have senses? Will it know desire? How can desire and fulfillment exist together? Can the human soul ever know God? Contributors to this volume examine well-known and previously unexplored texts and artefacts from historical and art historical, theological, philosophical, and literary perspectives, to complement and challenge more general surveys of the history of heaven, and above all to illuminate the richness and variety of medieval Christian ideas on heaven.

Book excerpt: Aglow from a distance was the Pearly Gate. The Pearly Gate was a mile long. Armed Cherubs stood guard by the holy gate. They were three thousand warrior-angels in number. A male Archangel, whose name was Ironodum, was their leader. His Deputy, a female Cherub, was an esteemed heavenly messenger with a Deputy-Arch attached to her title. And her name was Gateagu. Based on her meritorious valor and steadfast loyalty, she was rapidly elevated from a cherub to a seraph, and then to the Deputy Archangel. The King gave them their names, meant to reflect their serious responsibilities as the leaders of the Gate Guards. Seven roads made their way from the wide gate to both the Holy Shrine and the Most-Esteemed Thrones.
Download or read book Sex on Earth as It Is in Heaven written by Patricia Beattie Jung and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2016-12-28 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is part of a growing chorus of theological voices raised in support of erotic desire. Although most theologians have concluded that there will be no experience of sexual desire and delight in the world to come, Patricia Beattie Jung critically examines the historical traditions and biblical rationales for this teaching. She defends an alternative claim that there will be a healed and glorified experience of sex in heaven based on a compelling account of the Christian hope for bodily resurrection. The first half of the work focuses on Christian foundations for the notion of sex in heaven, while the second goes on to discuss some of the implications of those convictions for sex on earth. Jung concludes with discussions of how best to nurture sexual delight on earth and how and why internet pornography fails in that regard.

Download or read book Scores of Being written by H.A.E. Hub Zwart and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph studies opera as music drama, guided by four ideas: opera as an ambiance (setting an acoustic stage where dramatic action becomes possible), as a Gesamtkunstwerk (incorporating other arts forms into a coherent whole), as archaeology (revivifying lost worlds of experience) and as a dialectical syllogism (resulting in the negation of a paralysing negation via a dramatic act). We focus on Richard Wagner, as composer and author, but also address other music dramas (by Giacomo Puccini and John Adams), adopting a Hegelian dialectical perspective, but involving other dialectical thinkers (e.g., Marx and Engels) as well.
Download or read book An Engineer s Heaven and Mars written by J.C. Burge and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-08-18 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text is about religion, a very sensitive subject. The text is also purely fictional and very imaginative but still a sensitive subject. As I explain in the foreword, as a devout Christian, I try very hard not to even presume to have a right to claim to be a religious authority. I am a well-educated pragmatic engineer with an extensive folder of technical engineering achievements. If readers have patience with my setting up a purely "what if" heavenly earthlike similar daily living conditions, I point out that it allows me to (1) be assigned to and work on tasks to aid Christians on earth with very special other "heavenlies" per directions from heaven's management; the other heavenlies include the wonderful Saint Paul of Tarsus and my dear departed wife. (2) Currently, there are significant US spacecraft travel capability advances being made. The target is Mars, the only other planet in our galaxy capable of life support. Since God is a God of the universe, soon after Mars is colonized, heaven will start to include Christians from both Earth and Mars. This text includes some of the adventures and religious activities of a small number of early Mars travelers.
Download or read book Protest Praise written by Jon Michael Spencer and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a skillful tracing of two tracks in the evolution of musical genres that have evolved from black religion. Songs of protest developed from the spiritual through social-gospel hymnody to culminate in songs of the civil-rights movement and the blues. Born in rebellion, they envision the Kingdom of God.Songs of praise, by contrast, express adoration. Beginning with the "ring-shout," Spencer follows the history of intoned declamation through the tongue song, Holiness-Pentecostal music, and the chanted sermon of the black preacher. Spencer's approach, termed theomusicology, unlocks the wealth of African-American sacred music with a theological key. The result is a fascinating account of a people's struggle with God in history.
Download or read book Singing the Congregation written by Monique M. Ingalls and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-17 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary worship music shapes the way evangelical Christians understand worship itself. Author Monique M. Ingalls argues that participatory worship music performances have brought into being new religious social constellations, or "modes of congregating". Through exploration of five of these modes--concert, conference, church, public, and networked congregations--Singing the Congregation reinvigorates the analytic categories of "congregation" and "congregational music." Drawing from theoretical models in ethnomusicology and congregational studies, Singing the Congregation reconceives the congregation as a fluid, contingent social constellation that is actively performed into being through communal practice--in this case, the musically-structured participatory activity known as "worship." "Congregational music-making" is thereby recast as a practice capable of weaving together a religious community both inside and outside local institutional churches. Congregational music-making is not only a means of expressing local concerns and constituting the local religious community; it is also a powerful way to identify with far-flung individuals, institutions, and networks that comprise this global religious community. The interactions among the congregations reveal widespread conflicts over religious authority, carrying far-ranging implications for how evangelicals position themselves relative to other groups in North America and beyond.
Download or read book The Legacy of Hans Jonas written by Hava Tirosh-Samuelson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-08-31 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hans Jonas (1903-1993) was one of the most creative and original Jewish thinkers of the twentieth-century. This volume offers a retrospective of Jonas's life and works by bringing together historians of modern Germany, Judaica scholars, philosophers, bioethicists, and environmentalists to reflect on the meaning of his legacy today. From a historian of religions, who wrote a path-breaking monograph on Gnosticism, Jonas turned to the philosophy of nature, extending his existential philosophy and phenomenological analysis to include all forms of life. Unique among twentieth-century Jewish philosophers, Jonas argued for the possibility of a genuinely symbiotic relationship between humanity and nature, which he believed had been suppressed by modern technology. Jonas spoke against the human domination of nature on the basis of Jewish sources, especially the Bible and Lurianic Kabbalah, and he was among the first to define the ethical challenges that modern technology poses to humanity.
Download or read book The Birth of the Orchestra written by John Spitzer and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2004-04-29 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the emergence of the orchestra from 16th-century string bands to the 'classical' orchestra of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and their contemporaries. Ensembles of bowed stringed instruments, several players per part plus continuo and wind instruments, were organized in France in the mid-17th century and then in Rome at the end of the century. The prestige of these ensembles and of the music and performing styles of their leaders, Jean-Baptiste Lully and Arcangelo Corelli, caused them to be imitated elsewhere, until by the late 18th century, the orchestra had become a pan-European phenomenon. Spitzer and Zaslaw review previous accounts of these developments, then proceed to a thoroughgoing documentation and discussion of orchestral organization, instrumentation, and social roles in France, Italy, Germany, England, and the American colonies. They also examine the emergence of orchestra musicians, idiomatic music for orchestras, orchestral performance practices, and the awareness of the orchestra as a central institution in European life.
