Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection is a combination of romantic, philosophic, mystical, and spiritual poetry written to warm even the coldest of hearts. They come from a very inspired place that speaks of a great desire to understand ourselves. The elusive butterfly in all of us, that out of its innate curiosity to learn and experience things by necessity, transforms itself. They also speak of the unique place that we all share in the divine tapestry we call life and how we are all intimately connected. The poems reflect on the betrayal and hypocrisy that we all inevitably encounter on our journey through life. Most importantly, a message of hope and joy runs through them, so that we are always reminded that even in our darkest moments, the light of truth and love has never abandoned us. The book also shares some of the stories that inspired and motivated some of the poems. They run the gamut, from gut-wrenching tearjerkers to deeply impassioned pleas for universal kindness to the whimsical frolic of a playful little child. Included is a section titled Musings on Life. These are philosophic perspectives intended to be life lessons for the reader. Its been said that not all men are masters, but all masters have been men. Along that same line of thinking, the author feels that although not all philosophers are poets, all poets are philosophers.

Download or read book The Black Heavens written by Brian R. Dirck and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2019-02-06 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, Lincoln Group of New York Award of Achievement 2019 From multiple personal tragedies to the terrible carnage of the Civil War, death might be alongside emancipation of the slaves and restoration of the Union as one of the great central truths of Abraham Lincoln’s life. Yet what little has been written specifically about Lincoln and death is insufficient, sentimentalized, or devoid of the rich historical literature about death and mourning during the nineteenth century. The Black Heavens: Abraham Lincoln and Death is the first in-depth account of how the sixteenth president responded to the riddles of mortality, undertook personal mourning, and coped with the extraordinary burden of sending hundreds of thousands of soldiers to be killed on battlefields. Going beyond the characterization of Lincoln as a melancholy, tragic figure, Brian R. Dirck investigates Lincoln’s frequent encounters with bereavement and sets his response to death and mourning within the social, cultural, and political context of his times. At a young age Lincoln saw the grim reality of lives cut short when he lost his mother and sister. Later, he was deeply affected by the deaths of two of his sons, three-year-old Eddy in 1850 and eleven-year-old Willie in 1862, as well as the combat deaths of close friends early in the war. Despite his own losses, Lincoln learned how to approach death in an emotionally detached manner, a survival skill he needed to cope with the reality of his presidency. Dirck shows how Lincoln gradually turned to his particular understanding of God’s will in his attempts to articulate the meaning of the atrocities of war to the American public, as showcased in his allusions to religious ideas in the Gettysburg Address and the Second Inaugural. Lincoln formed a unique approach to death: both intellectual and emotional, typical and yet atypical of his times. In showing how Lincoln understood and responded to death, both privately and publicly, Dirck paints a compelling portrait of a commander in chief who buried two sons and gave the orders that sent an unprecedented number of Americans to their deaths.

Book The Horizons of Christopher Columbus Using the Heavens to Map America

Download or read book The Horizons of Christopher Columbus Using the Heavens to Map America written by Arne Molander and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The horizons were of fundamental importance to Columbus. The western horizon was the focus of his lifelong quest for undiscovered territory. He used the stars grazing his northern horizon as his guides for sailing constant latitudes, and the lunar-planetary conjunctions (LPCs) at his eastern and western horizons to measure his longitudes. Most 15th Century oceanic sailors knew how to sail constant latitudes guided by the stars, but few, other than Columbus, knew how to use the heavens to measure longitude. His innovative navigation method measured longitudes by comparing measurements of LPCs at his eastern and western horizons using celestial data tabulated in his Ephemerides. Major findings include: Columbus used celestial events, he served on a 1477 voyage to Nova Scotia, comprehensive evidence reveals his 1492 landfall was at Egg Island, Amerigo Vespucci beat Ponce de Leon to Florida by a dozen years, and Columbus may have facilitated a deliberate sinking of the Santa Maria.

Book Jason Kidd the Inspiring Story of One of Basketball s Greatest Point Guards

Download or read book Jason Kidd the Inspiring Story of One of Basketball s Greatest Point Guards written by Clayton Geoffreys and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn the Inspiring Story of the Legendary Point Guard Jason Kidd! Read on your PC, Mac, smartphone, tablet or Kindle device! In Jason Kidd: The Inspiring Story of One of Basketball's Greatest Point Guards, you will learn the inspirational story of one of basketball's premier point guards, Jason Kidd. Jason Kidd was easily one of the best point guards to play the game of basketball throughout the 2000s. With an extraordinary ability to pass the ball at precisely the right time, Kidd was like Steve Nash in that he made the teammates around him fundamentally better. Being an NBA Champion (with the Dallas Mavericks in 2011), ten-time All-Star and five-time All-NBA First Team member, Jason Kidd's passing and rebounding abilities made him feared by opponents. He corralled triple-doubles years before flashy athletic point guards like Russell Westbrook began doing so. Read on to learn Kidd's inspiring story. Here is a preview of what is inside this book: Childhood and Early Life High School Career College Career Jason Kidd's NBA Career Getting Drafted Rookie Campaign First All-Star Season Tensions in Dallas, the Trade to Phoenix, Fresh Start with the Suns, First Playoff Appearance First Full Season with Phoenix, Igniting the Scorching Suns Shortened Season, Another First Round Exit Breaking Through to the Second Round Final Season in Phoenix The Trade to New Jersey, Reaching the NBA Finals Second Consecutive Finals Appearance Teaming Up with Vince Carter Leading a Trio with Carter and Jefferson Final Stretch in New Jersey, the Return to Dallas Contending as a Mav First and Only NBA Championship Final Season with Dallas Stop at the Big Apple, and Retirement Coaching Career USA National Basketball Team Career Personal Life Impact, Legacy, and Future An excerpt from the book: As far as ranking the top point guards in the history of the NBA is concerned, no list would be truly complete without Jason Kidd somewhere on top of all of the other playmakers the league has seen. Why not? He is an NBA champion, a 10-time All-Star, a six-time All-NBA Team member, a nine-time All-Defensive Team selection, a two-time Olympic Gold medalist, and a five-time assist leader. On paper alone you would see how valuable of a point guard Kidd was in his 19-year NBA stint. However, there were also times when he was not truly befitting of being called a historically elite point guard because of all the criticisms and shortcomings he has had as a player. He came into the league with virtually no jump shot and a very minimal offensive repertoire. He has had struggles with coaches and even, for a while, lacked the work ethic needed to be elite. And, for most of his career, he was never the leader of a championship team. But, for all those criticisms and downsides to his game, Jason Kidd was always a leader that made his other teammates great by doing everything else on the court. He always made it a point to find teammates because scoring the ball himself was never really his top priority. His ability to rebound the ball at a high level for a point guard made sure he could trigger fast-break opportunities at a quick rate. And his ability to defend every guard position earned him the reputation of being an elite defender in his prime. Kidd's vast array of skills made him a ray of sunshine to a franchise because he always lifted his teammates up in every way possible. Book Simplicius On Aristotle On the Heavens 2 10 14

Download or read book Simplicius On Aristotle On the Heavens 2 10 14 written by Simplicius, and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-04-22 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aristotle believed that the outermost stars are carried round us on a transparent sphere. There are directions in the universe and a preferred direction of rotation. The sun, moon and planets are carried on different revolving spheres. The spheres and celestial bodies are composed of an everlasting fifth element, which has none of the ordinary contrary properties like heat and cold which could destroy it, but only the facility for uniform rotation. But this creates problems as to how the heavenly bodies create light, and, in the case of the sun, heat. The topics covered in this part of Simplicius' commentary are: the speeds and distances of the stars; that the stars are spherical; why the sun and moon have fewer motions than the other five planets; why the sphere of the fixed stars contains so many stars whereas the other heavenly spheres contain no more than one (Simplicius has a long excursus on planetary theory in his commentary on this chapter); discussion of people's views on the position, motion or rest, shape, and size of the earth; that the earth is a relatively small sphere at rest in the centre of the cosmos.
