Book excerpt: Khalid, our narrator, and his two cousins, Jahan and Jaleh, comment on the record of a historic revolution they are busy researching via live lessons and recorded discs. Skyscraper Heavens weaves the dialogue of the characters, which include Zareen, Khalid’s wife, around the backdrop of a largely chronological summation of a revolution in the fictional Middle Eastern country of Baug. The retelling of the events of the revolution and the characters’ responses to it touch on Marcusian themes of opposition and containment. The juxtaposition of timelines and the live and prerecorded study sessions in which the characters participate form a motif for the reader, a mosaic of the dialectic.

This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Someday in the future, when terrorism, pollution, and global warming (with horrendous weather changes) force earthbound man to the precipice of existence, mankind will have to find sanctity from destruction. The answer may lie in adapting to living in space, or on man-made islands in the middle of the ocean. After living shoulder to shoulder in cramped quarters for years on end, survivors soon discover that all forms of religion and politics must be banned; otherwise, mankind is doomed. Laid off from Boeing, Don Ringo keeps trying to establish a business, but fails miserably. Only when he teams up with a retired con man does he succeed, by buying a bankrupt space shuttle manufacturer. The space shuttle he calls Earth Hopper is a resounding success, reducing launch costs to a fraction of his competitors. He decides to open a "Spaceshop" in Earth orbit that provides supplies and repair services to NASA, the International Space Station, International Moon Base, and to others. Teaming up with Zili Pedog in Sitnalta, their fortunes multiply, and space is conquered. The future of mankind is at stake. The assault comes from the failures of religion, the politics of capitalism, socialism, communism, autocracy, dictatorship, and democracy in not addressing global recession, and man-made ecological disaster. The Armageddon of tomorrow may well come long before earthlings take the precautions needed to survive as an intelligent species.

Download or read book Hell from the Heavens written by John Wukovits and published by Da Capo Press. This book was released on 2015-04-07 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking toward the heavens, the destroyer crew saw what seemed to be the entire Japanese Air Force assembled directly above. Hell was about to be unleashed on them in the largest single-ship kamikaze attack of World War II. On April 16, 1945, the crewmen of the USS Laffey were battle hardened and prepared. They had engaged in combat off the Normandy coast in June 1944. They had been involved in three prior assaults of enemy positions in the Pacific-at Leyte and Lingayen in the Philippines and at Iwo Jima. They had seen kamikazes purposely crash into other destroyers and cruisers in their unit and had seen firsthand the bloody results of those crazed tactics. But nothing could have prepared the crew for this moment-an eighty-minute ordeal in which the single small ship was targeted by no fewer than twenty-two Japanese suicide aircraft. By the time the unprecedented attack on the Laffey was finished, thirty-two sailors lay dead, more than seventy were wounded, and the ship was grievously damaged. Although she lay shrouded in smoke and fire for hours, the Laffey somehow survived, and the gutted American warship limped from Okinawa's shore for home, where the ship and crew would be feted as heroes. Using scores of personal interviews with survivors, the memoirs of crew members, and the sailors' wartime correspondence, historian and author John Wukovits breathes life into the story of this nearly forgotten historic event. The US Navy described the kamikaze attack on the Laffey "as one of the great sea epics of the war." In Hell from the Heavens, the author makes the ordeal of the Laffey and her crew a story for the ages.

  • Pages : 225 pages

Book excerpt: “This electrifying novel of love, creativity and madness moves between Elizabethan England and 21st-century New York.” —The Guardian A New York Times Notable Book of the Year New York, late summer, 2000. A party in a spacious Manhattan apartment, hosted by a wealthy young activist. Dozens of idealistic twenty-somethings have impassioned conversations over takeout dumplings and champagne. The evening shines with the heady optimism of a progressive new millennium. A young man, Ben, meets a young woman, Kate—and they begin to fall in love. Kate lives with her head in the clouds, so at first Ben isn’t that concerned when she tells him about the recurring dream she’s had since childhood. In the dream, she’s transported to the past, where she lives a second life as Emilia, the mistress of a nobleman in Elizabethan England. But for Kate, the dream becomes increasingly real, to the point where it threatens to overwhelm her life. And soon she’s waking from it to find the world changed—pictures on her wall she doesn’t recognize, new buildings in the neighborhood that have sprung up overnight. As Kate tries to make sense of what’s happening, Ben worries the woman he’s fallen in love with is losing her grip on reality. Both intoxicating and thought-provoking, The Heavens is a powerful reminder of the consequences of our actions, a poignant testament to how the people we love are destined to change, and a masterful exploration of the power of dreams. “Heady and elegant.” —The New York Times Book Review “A complex, unmissable work from a writer who deserves wide acclaim.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

Book The Heavens Might Crack

Book excerpt: A vivid portrait of how Americans grappled with King's death and legacy in the days, weeks, and months after his assassination On April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was fatally shot as he stood on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. At the time of his murder, King was a polarizing figure--scorned by many white Americans, worshipped by some African Americans and liberal whites, and deemed irrelevant by many black youth. In The Heavens Might Crack, historian Jason Sokol traces the diverse responses, both in America and throughout the world, to King's death. Whether celebrating or mourning, most agreed that the final flicker of hope for a multiracial America had been extinguished. A deeply moving account of a country coming to terms with an act of shocking violence, The Heavens Might Crack is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand America's fraught racial past and present.
