Book Pressure Drop and Endwall Heat Transfer Effects of Porous Turbulators in a Rectangular Channel

Download or read book Pressure Drop and Endwall Heat Transfer Effects of Porous Turbulators in a Rectangular Channel written by Jared Matthew Pent and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the local and averaged endwall heat transfer effects of a staggered array of porous pin fins within a rectangular channel. The porous pin fins were made from aluminum and had a pore density of 10 pores per inch (PPI). The pressure drop through the channel was also determined for several flow rates and presented in terms of the friction factor. Local heat transfer coefficients on the endwall were measured using Thermochromic Liquid Crystal (TLC) sheets recorded with a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera. Static and total pressure measurements were taken at the entrance and exit of the test section to determine the overall pressure drop through the channel and explain the heat transfer trends through the channel. Results are presented for Reynolds numbers between 25000 and 130000 and a blockage ratio (blocked channel area divided by open channel area) of 50%. All results were compared to the corresponding results obtained using solid pins. All experiments were carried out in a 150 mm by 500 mm channel with an X/D of 1.72, a Y/D of 2.0, and a Z/D of 1.72 for the porous pins. It was found that for the range of Reynold's numbers tested in this study, the porous pin array consistently resulted in a larger friction factor, and therefore greater losses than a geometrically similar array of solid pins. The friction factors for the solid pin array were between 9.5 and 10.5, similar to the results found in the literature. For the porous pins, however, the friction factors were significantly increased as the Reynold's number increased, reaching as high as 15.3 at the highest Reynold's number tested. The heat transfer enhancement for the porous pins was found to be between 150 and 170% while the solid pins resulted in a heat transfer enhancement between 190 and 230%.

Book Fin Shape Thermal Optimization Using Bejan s Constuctal Theory

Download or read book Fin Shape Thermal Optimization Using Bejan s Constuctal Theory written by Giulio Lorenzini and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2011-01-02 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book contains research results obtained by applying Bejan's Constructal Theory to the study and therefore the optimization of fins, focusing on T-shaped and Y-shaped ones. Heat transfer from finned surfaces is an example of combined heat transfer natural or forced convection on the external parts of the fin, and conducting along the fin. Fin's heat exchange is rather complex, because of variation of both temperature along the fin and convective heat transfer coefficient. Furthermore possible presence of more fins invested by the same fluid flow has to be considered. Classical fin theory tried to reduce the coupled heat transfer problem to a one-dimensional problem by defining an average temperature of the fin and writing equations using this parameter. However, it was shown that this approach cannot be used because of the effects of two-dimensional heat transfer, especially in the presence of short fins. CFD codes offer the possibility to consider bi-dimensional (and more generally, three-dimensional) effects and then a more real approach to the physic phenomena of finned surface's heat exchange. A commercial CFD code was used to analyse the case of heat exchange in presence of T-shaped fins, following an approach suggested by Bejan's Constructal Theory. The comparative results showed a significant agreement with previous research taken as a reference, and this result allows for the application of this approach to a wider range of systems. T-shaped optimized fin geometry is the starting point for further research. Starting from the optimal results (T-shape optimized fins), we show the trend of the assessment parameter (the dimensionless conductance) in function of the angle α between the two horizontal arms of the fin. A value for α, 90°

Book Stagerred dropped and circular Pin Fins in 1D and 2D forced convection

Download or read book Stagerred dropped and circular Pin Fins in 1D and 2D forced convection written by Nishigandh Gorade and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2023-10-17 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Engineering - Mechanical Engineering, grade: 7.38, Savitribai Phule Pune University, formerly University of Pune (D.Y Patil School of Engineering), course: Master of Engineering, language: English, abstract: In this experimental analysis of heat transfer variation and its enhancement of the dropped and circular shapes, staggered pin fin heat sink under constant heat flux condition are presented through a conducted experimental comparison between aluminium, stainless steel and iron materials with circular and dropped shaped pin fins. A pin fin is fabricated from heat sink aluminium (Aluminium-Magnesium-Silicon Alloy), Stainless steel and ferrous material with a diameter of 10 mm. The Base plate is also same material and fins are mounted on a base plate with the help of a thread. Various trials were conducted on each material for choosing the best materials for more heat transfer. Also, to choose which is the best shape of pin fins i.e. circular or dropped for enhancing maximum heat transfer. Also, trials were conducted to find out from forced convection from 2D or 1D which is more capable to transferring heat transfer and therefore to choose the best flow of heat transfer model. The total comparison between circular and dropped shaped pin fins was performed in this experimental analysis. Finally the results were validated by using ANSYS R14.5 simulation tool.
