Book Heart Teams for Treatment of Cardiovascular Disease

Download or read book Heart Teams for Treatment of Cardiovascular Disease written by Thierry Mesana and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive framework for developing heart teams to manage a variety of cardiovascular diseases. Management of cardiovascular diseases has changed dramatically in recent years due to developments in evidence-based practices and treatments as well as the introduction of new devices. The sequential method of referring patients from doctor to doctor is becoming an antiquated model. The future of cardiac care lies in developing multidisciplinary "Heart Teams" to provide patient-focused treatment for complex cardiovascular problems. This volume examines the history and evolution of cardiovascular care and technology and explains why the implementation of heart teams is absolutely necessary to the future of cardiac care. It analyzes the role of heart teams for heart failure, complex coronary revascularization, mitral valve disease, cardiac imaging, aortic valve disease, cardiac arrhythmias, and women's heart health. Finally, the book explores how heart teams work with hospital administration and the broader healthcare industry. Heart Teams for Treatment of Cardiovascular Disease: A Guide for Advancing Patient-Centered Cardiac Care is an essential resource for physicians and related professionals, residents, fellows, and graduate students in cardiology, cardiac surgery, critical care medicine, and radiology.

Book Transcatheter Valve Repair

Download or read book Transcatheter Valve Repair written by Ziyad M. Hijazi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-01-17 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transcatheter Valve Repair discusses all aspects related to percutaneous and established valve repair methods. The book is divided into few major sections covering all four valves and other topics. Each section contains several chapters discussing everything related to that valve. Beginning with the pulmonary valve, since it was the first valve to be tackled in the catheterization laboratory, and then moving to the aortic, then the mitral and then finally end with the tricuspid valve. 1.5M US citizens alone have some degree of aortic valve stenosis, with half (750K) requiring aortic valve replacement. Aortic valve replacement, on the whole, is performed by surgeons, requiring bypass machines and technicians, as well as the usual operating team. The operation is expensive and occupies a considerable amount of operating room time. Mostly, the aortic valve is calcified and the usual option available to patients is valve replacement with a variety of choices, ranging from porcine valves to synthetic, for which there are many manufacturers. It should be noted that the aortic valve is the most problematic of valves. Percutaneous procedures are the answer. The bottom line is that given the growing elderly population, many more patients will require valve repair, thus increasing health care costs with not only surgical operations but also hospitalisation. Percutanous valve repair, whilst requiring a cath lab team, does not involve bypass machines nor extended hospitalisation. Like percutaneous transluminal coronary artery interventions (PTCA) has replaced coronary artery bypass grafts (once the golden standard), and now stenting having replaced PTCA and its balloons. We now see drug eluting stents replacing ordinary stents (though at a much higher cost. There will be a huge movement toward percutanous valve repair, which should presumably cut costs but also morbidity and mortality.

Book Percutaneous Treatment of Cardiovascular Diseases in Women

Download or read book Percutaneous Treatment of Cardiovascular Diseases in Women written by Patrizia Presbitero and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-20 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes a wide range of interventional procedures currently employed in the treatment of cardiac diseases in women with the aim of enabling not only interventional cardiologists but also cardiologists and cardiac surgeons to refine their approach to female patients and thus improve outcomes. The book reflects the increasing awareness of gender differences with regard to coronary artery disease and structural valve heart disease. Examples include myocardial infarction, which carries a worse prognosis in women in part because they suffer from this disease mostly in the 7th decade of life, present more frequently with hemodynamic instability and later from symptom onset, and have fragile, small and tortuous coronary arteries that are more technically demanding in the context of primary percutaneous coronary intervention. Another example is symptomatic aortic stenosis, which carries a better prognosis in women who undergo trans-catheter aortic valve implantation partially due to a better annulus-prosthesis match, which leads to less residual paravalvular regurgitation, better left ventricular function and lower aggregation of comorbidities. Further, in women left ventricular response to aortic stenosis is typified by muscle hypertrophy with a small ventricular cavity. These differences are reflected in the clinical manifestations and their impact on diagnosis, treatment, and choice of tools and devices for use in interventional procedures. By explaining the at times subtle variances in disease and treatment techniques for female and male patients, this book will help practitioners select the most appropriate procedures and materials in a range of settings.
