Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses and reviews progress in a major innovative development within police work known as evidence-based policing. It involves a significant extension and strengthening of links between research and practice and is directed to the task of increasing police effectiveness in the field of community crime prevention. This volume provides an international perspective that synthesizes recent research results from the United States and other countries – including systematic reviews of large bodies of evidence – to illuminate several of the most challenging issues currently confronting police departments. It examines recent advances in research-based models of policing and the expanding base in outcome evaluation. Key areas of coverage include: Managing the nighttime economy. Supervising sex offenders. Tackling domestic/intimate partner violence. Addressing school violence and the formation of gangs. Reducing victim and witness retraction and disengagement. Responding to mental disorders, safeguarding vulnerable adults, and providing victim support. Leveraging public awareness campaigns. In addition, each chapter presents an overview of key issues within a designated area, synthesizes existing reviews, and examines the most recent research. The book clearly and concisely presents major concepts, theories, and research findings, thereby providing both conceptual and analytic tools alongside an integrated presentation of principal findings and messages. The volume concludes with a discussion of current directions in research, key developments in policing strategies, and identification of effective operational structures for facilitating and sustaining research-practice links. Evidence-Based Policing and Community Crime Prevention is a must-have resource for researchers, clinicians and other professionals, and graduate students in forensic psychology, criminology and criminal justice, public health, developmental psychology, psychotherapy and counseling, psychiatry, social work, educational policy and politics, health psychology, nursing, and behavioral therapy/rehabilitation.

Download or read book Community Crime Prevention written by United States. National Advisory Commission on Criminal Justice Standards and Goals and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report addresses the need for community support and involvement in the reduction of criminal opportunity, the delivery of public services, and government integrity. The National Advisory Commission on Criminal Justice Standards and Goals defines community crime prevention as activity outside the conventional criminal justice system directed toward reducing crime. Assuming no single solution to the crime problem, the Commission has proposed nearly 75 standards and recommendations that focus on citizen action, the delivery of public services, the reduction of criminal opportunities, and integrity in government. This volume spells out for the individual, the community organization, and the local government, what can and should be done by them to reduce crime. Citing action by private citizens as the heart of community crime prevention, the Commission urges more citizen involvement with neighborhood security, volunteer work, and community improvement. Citizen concern should be channeled into community organizations and governing bodies and these agencies should encourage and support citizen action programs. Public service delivery proposals stress the need for coordinating existing services. Job opportunities in high unemployment areas need to be expanded and unnecessary restrictions on hiring ex-offenders should be eliminated. The Commission recommends implementation of career education in elementary and secondary schools, establishment and support of youth service bureaus, and individualized treatment for drug offenders. Building design, security codes, and street lighting are covered as effective citizen crime precautions. The Commission also discusses conflict of interest, government procurement, zoning, licensing and tax assessment and advocates supervision of political campaign financing and investigation and prosecution of government corrupters.

Download or read book Planning for Crime Prevention written by Ted Kitchen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-08-02 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crime and the fear of crime are issues high in public concern and on political agendas in most developed countries. This book takes these issues and relates them to the contribution that urban planners and participative planning processes can make in response to these problems. Its focus is thus on the extent to which crime opportunities can be prevented or reduced through the design, planning and management of the built environment. The perspective of the book is transatlantic and comparative, not only because ideas and inspiration in this and many other fields increasingly move between countries but also because there is a great deal of relevant theoretical material and practice in both the USA and the UK which has not previously been pulled together in this systemic manner.

Book excerpt: This Congressional hearing report covers testimony given to the Subcommittee on Postsecondary Education, Training and Life-Long Learning relating to the issue of crime on college campuses. Specifically the testimony addressed a proposed bill before the House of Representatives, the Open Campus Police Logs Act, which would amend the Higher Education Act of 1965. Testimony also addressed the effectiveness of the existing Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990, which was included as part of the Student Right to Know Campus Security Act, enacted to provide reliable information to parents and students about criminal activity on college campuses. Transcripts are provided of the testimony of witnesses concerning: the effectiveness of the existing law, how the law is being administered by the Department of Education, whether schools and the Department have been abiding by both the spirit and requirements of the law, what suggestions witnesses have for further changes to the law, and views of proposed Open Campus Police Logs Act. Transcripts are included of statements offered by five concerned private individuals, two school administrators, and David Longanecker, Assistant Secretary for Postsecondary Education. In addition to the oral testimony, prepared statements, letters, and supplementary materials are included in the report. (CH)
