Book Measurement of Physiologic Health for Children Middle ear disease and hearing impairment

Download or read book Measurement of Physiologic Health for Children Middle ear disease and hearing impairment written by Kathleen N. Lohr and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four upper respiratory conditions are investigated: middle ear disease (otitis media), hearing loss, tonsillitis, and colds. Data on prevalence and adverse consequences are used in the Health Insurance Experiment (HIE) to investigate the effect of different levels of health insurance on health and quality of care. This volume reviews pertinent medical literature, outlines the HIE definition of the diseases, describes HIE methods for measuring their presence, discusses enrollment results from the HIE population, and lists criteria for good medical care. Illustrative findings include: 11 percent of the children overall had had a middle ear infection within the previous year. Prevalence of current bilateral disease dropped with age, starting at 21 percent for ages 4-5 and decreasing to 9 percent at ages 12-13. Pain and distress and parental worry due to middle ear disease were the more frequently reported impacts. 1.2 percent of 1,464 children were reported as having a hearing deficit. Appendix A contains results for tonsillitis and colds.

Book Microtia and Atresia Combined Approach by Plastic and Otologic Surgery

This book was released on 2013-10-14 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remarkable progress in the development of new concepts and techniques used in reconstructive surgery of microtia/atresia of the external auditory canal (EAC) has been made since the beginning of the 21st century. Helical computed tomography has made a three-dimensional reconstruction of the soft tissue of the temporal bone surface and the cranium possible, and has laid the groundwork for a collaboration between plastic surgeons and otologists. This book presents the latest findings on reconstructive surgery performed jointly by plastic surgeons and otologists. Based on this concept, information on diagnosis, surgical procedures, outcomes, long-term results and psychology is discussed. Collaborative surgery offers advantages not only in terms of a better reconstruction of morphology and function, but also in terms of the lower number of surgical procedures required which reduces the psychological pressure and economic burden on patients.

Book Healing Childhood Ear Infections

Download or read book Healing Childhood Ear Infections written by Michael A. Schmidt and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 1996 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ear infections are still the leading reason parents take their child to a doctor. To combat infections, parents and doctors employ arsenals of antihistimines and antibiotics, and too quickly resort to ear tubes and surgery. In this updated and revised second edition of his bestselling Childhood Ear Infections, Dr. Michael Schmidt describes the current controversy in medical journals questioning existing treatments for chronic earaches. The causes of otitis media, Dr. Schmidt argues, are a series of events which flourish when poor nutrition occurs: the immune system is lowered, excess mucus is produced, and vitamin and mineral absorption is inadequate. Careful attention to diet and nutrition to prevent food allergies, and the use of acupressure, homeopathic medicine, and herbal medicine are effective in healing earaches and preventing their recurrence. Healing Childhood Ear Infections offers the most compelling critique to date of existing treatments and the effectiveness of alternative therapies.
