This book was released on 2017-05-23 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: RHEUMATOLOGY IS THE BRANCH OF MEDICINE dealing with musculo¬skeletal disorders and autoimmune diseases. There are more than 200 of these rheumatic diseases, afflicting millions of Americans of all ages. By far, the most common disease treated by rheumatologists is arthritis. According to the CDC (Center For Disease Control), arthritis alone affects more than 53 million people, or 23 percent of all adults in the US! Osteoarthritis is the leading form of arthritis, but there are others, such as rheumatoid arthritis, gout, and lupus. In fact, there are 100 different kinds of arthritis. They all cause pain, aching, stiffness, and swelling in or around the joints. Some can affect multiple organs and create life threatening conditions. Some may be acute, while others are chronic, meaning they last a lifetime. Rheumatology is also concerned with autoimmune diseases that afflict roughly 50 million Americans. There are many kinds of autoimmune diseases. Most have unfamiliar names, but nearly everyone has heard of multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, Crohn's, and fibromyalgia. Symptoms tend to be vague, such as unrelenting fatigue or unexplained pain in bones, soft tissue, or gastrointestinal tract. Determining a diagnosis can be very difficult. Choosing the most effective treatment is also challenging. But that is what a rheumatologist's job is all about - diagnosing and treating long-term diseases that most other doctors cannot recognize. Rheumatology is a sub¬specialty of either pediatrics or internal medicine, depending on the age group being treated. Rheumatologists must first become a licensed physician - Medical Doctor (MDs) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO). That takes four years of undergraduate college followed by four years of medical school. Another three years of residency is required after graduating from medical school. Residents put in long hours - 16 hours a day or more - getting hands-on training in a hospital setting. After that, their skills are perfected in fellowship programs that typically last an additional two to four years. Rheumatologists who start their educational path right after high school are well into their thirties by the time they are qualified to start practicing on their own. With such a heavy investment in education, it is good to know that it is going to be worth it. Rheumatologists report a high degree of satisfaction in their careers. In fact, rheumatologists are known as the happiest specialists. The work is intellectually stimulating, highly rewarding, and the earnings are excellent averaging well over $200,000 a year. The job outlook is excellent, too. Nationwide, there are more openings than candidates to fill them, and that gap is widening. Most rheuma¬tologists work in hospitals and clinics, but many are also employed by assisted care facilities, government health agencies, private health organizations, universities, and pharmaceutical companies. Those who are not employed as salaried staff are in private practice. They often see patients who have been referred by primary care physicians. Many are affiliated with hospitals, acting as consultants when hospitalized patients show signs of rheumatic disease. Becoming a rheumatologist means being in a position to alleviate pain and enhance the quality of life for people. If you have a strong interest in physiology, have an aptitude for solving problems, possess excellent communications skills, and want to help people, take a closer look. Rheumatology may be the career you are looking for.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrative Rheumatology offers a new and much-needed perspective in disease and symptom management, blending conventional medicine with alternative approaches not typically included in a Western medical practice. While conventional treatments can provide considerable symptomatic relief and can even slow the progression of many rheumatologic conditions, integrative treatment incorporating lifestyle interventions, mind-body approaches, and practices such as acupuncture and meditation into conventional medical therapies can improve quality of life, reduce medication dosages, and are generally better tolerated. In this book, researchers and clinicians highlight specific gaps in conventional rheumatologic care and examine how alternative approaches may be ideally suited to address these missed opportunities. Here, the authors introduce topics not typically addressed in conventional rheumatology texts, including nutritional therapies, exercise, herbal medicine, mind/body approaches, Ayurveda, and energy medicine. The contributors, all of whom have a background in academic medicine, share the approaches that they have found most effective in their own practices, basing their work on the best scientific evidence available. Ultimately, an understanding of complementary and alternative approaches to healing can help clinicians care for their patients using the best proven therapies to modify disease progress and relieve pain and disability.

Book Polymyalgia Rheumatica and Giant Cell Arteritis

Download or read book Polymyalgia Rheumatica and Giant Cell Arteritis written by Jozef Rovensky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-05-06 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the present monograph, we offer current insights into polymyalgia rheumatica and giant cell arthritis. Both diseases are typical for advanced age, and their incidences increase with aging. Both diseases are a center point of interest not only for rheu- tologists, gerontologists, ophthalmologists or neurologists, but also for general prac- tioners. Early diagnosis and rapid treatment, mainly with glucocorticoids can save one of the most precious senses-vision. Damage to other organs (heart, aorta, co- nary arteries, liver, lungs, kidneys), which are supplied by the arteries affected by ischemic syndrome in the setting of giant cell arthritis, has serious consequences as well. Late diagnosis of giant cell arthritis can have fatal consequences for affected patients. It is a matter of fact that the human population is aging. Therefore, more attention has to be paid not only to diagnosis, clinical course and treatment of rheumatic d- eases in elderly, but also to their genetic, immunologic, endocrinologic, chronobiologic mechanisms, and state-of-the-art diagnostic modalities. I am convinced that the int- disciplinary research of the diseases will allow us to diagnose and treat the rheumatic diseases even faster and more effectively in the future.

Book excerpt: Arthritis is the number one cause of disability in the U.S. with more than 40 million people diagnosed; that number is expected to rise as baby boomers continue to age. Yet few understand what arthritis really is, how it develops, and what sufferers can do to minimize its impact on daily activities and quality of life. He examines the various types of arthritis – from juvenile to rheumatoid and beyond – and the various medical practitioners involved in its diagnosis and treatment. Building on the current medical treatments available, Ali offers information about alternative and natural approaches, as well as lifestyle adjustments helpful in mitigating the symptoms. Whole family approaches that include caregivers and what they can do for their loved ones suffering from arthritis are also discussed. Readers will appreciate the comprehensive and thoughtful approach Ali takes to his topic, and will come away with the tools they need to live well with arthritis.

Book Changing Health Care Systems and Rheumatic Disease

Download or read book Changing Health Care Systems and Rheumatic Disease written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1997-02-09 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Market forces are driving a radical restructuring of health care delivery in the United States. At the same time, more and more people are living comparatively long lives with a variety of severe chronic health conditions. Many such people are concerned about the trend toward the creation of managed care systems because their need for frequent, often complex, medical services conflicts with managed care's desires to contain costs. The fear is that people with serious chronic disorders will be excluded from or underserved by the integrated health care delivery networks now emerging. Responding to a request from the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, this book reflects the results of a workshop that focused on the following questions: Does the model of managed care or an integrated delivery system influence the types of interventions provided to patients with chronic conditions and the clinical and health status outcomes resulting from those interventions? If so, are these effects quantitatively and clinically significant, as compared to the effects that other variables (e.g., income, education, ethnicity) have on patient outcomes? If the type of health care delivery system appears to be related to patient care and outcomes, can specific organizational, financial, or other variables be identified that account for the relationships? If not, what type of research should be pursued to provide the information needed about the relationship between types of health care systems and the processes and outcomes of care provided to people with serious chronic conditions?

Book Selected Health Conditions and Likelihood of Improvement with Treatment

Download or read book Selected Health Conditions and Likelihood of Improvement with Treatment written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2020-07-12 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Social Security Administration (SSA) administers two programs that provide disability benefits: the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program and the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. SSDI provides disability benefits to people (under the full retirement age) who are no longer able to work because of a disabling medical condition. SSI provides income assistance for disabled, blind, and aged people who have limited income and resources regardless of their prior participation in the labor force. Both programs share a common disability determination process administered by SSA and state agencies as well as a common definition of disability for adults: "the inability to engage in any substantial gainful activity by reason of any medically determinable physical or mental impairment which can be expected to result in death or which has lasted or can be expected to last for a continuous period of not less than 12 months." Disabled workers might receive either SSDI benefits or SSI payments, or both, depending on their recent work history and current income and assets. Disabled workers might also receive benefits from other public programs such as workers' compensation, which insures against work-related illness or injuries occurring on the job, but those other programs have their own definitions and eligibility criteria. Selected Health Conditions and Likelihood of Improvement with Treatment identifies and defines the professionally accepted, standard measurements of outcomes improvement for medical conditions. This report also identifies specific, long-lasting medical conditions for adults in the categories of mental health disorders, cancers, and musculoskeletal disorders. Specifically, these conditions are disabling for a length of time, but typically don't result in permanently disabling limitations; are responsive to treatment; and after a specific length of time of treatment, improve to the point at which the conditions are no longer disabling.
