Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: El Salvador is a small Central American country located between Guatemala and Honduras. It has a population of approximately 6.4 million people, making it the most densely populated country in the region. The official language is Spanish, and the currency is the US dollar. The majority of the population is Catholic, and the country has a rich history and culture. The indigenous Pipil people inhabited the area before being conquered by the Spanish Empire in the 16th century. El Salvador gained independence from Spain in 1821 and has since experienced political and social turmoil, including a civil war that lasted from 1980 to 1992. Despite its small size, El Salvador has a diverse geography, including mountains, volcanoes, and beaches. Its economy is largely dependent on exports, particularly coffee and textiles. The country has faced several challenges in recent years, including high levels of poverty, gang violence, and environmental issues. However, efforts to improve infrastructure, education, and social programs have been made to address these challenges. El Salvador is also known for its vibrant culture, including its music, art, and cuisine. Overall, the country has a rich history and unique identity that continues to evolve in the face of global and domestic challenges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Healing the Body Politic" examines the contested place of health and development in El Salvador over the last two decades. It recounts the dramatic story of radical health activism from its origins in liberation theology and guerrilla medicine during the third-world country's twelve-year civil war, through development of a remarkable "popular health system," administered by lay providers in a former war zone controlled by leftist rebels. The ethnography contributes to the integration of medical and political anthropology by bringing the semiotics of health and the body to bear on cultural understandings of warfare, the state, and globalization.

Book Challenging El Salvador s Rural Health Care Strategy

Download or read book Challenging El Salvador s Rural Health Care Strategy written by Maureen Lewis and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low-skilled health promoters posted in rural villages are doing little to improve health or health-seeking behaviors. In a supply-driven system, such workers have too few incentives, too little knowledge, and too little supervision. Results can be improved without increasing costs. Can a supply-driven network of under-skilled rural health promoters make a difference in rural health care? There are few, if any, signs that the current rural health strategy in El Salvador is working, whether the health promoters are government employees or nongovernmental organization (NGO) workers.Lewis, Eskeland, and Traa-Valerezo arrived at this conclusion after conducting interviews and analyzing primary and secondary data. The village-based health promoters lack incentives and supervision, and ultimately have little to offer local communities. NGO workers are more successful than government workers, but neither group performs satisfactorily.Even the rural poor use private services quite intensively, despite the high cost of the services and of getting access to them. Moreover, people seem to seek the services they need. They select self-treatment in 50 percent of illness episodes, with about the same success rate as when they use health providers.Other options should be considered, as results can be improved without increasing costs. This paper - a product of the Human Development Sector Units, Europe and Central Asia Region and Latin America and Caribbean Region; and Public Economics, Development Research Group - is part of a larger effort in the Bank to encourage appropriate policies and programs in the health sector.

Book Health Services in Latin America and Asia

Download or read book Health Services in Latin America and Asia written by José Núñez del Arco and published by IDB. This book was released on 2001 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On either side of the globe, poor people often do not have access to the health services they need. Improvements in health care systems in Asia have lagged behind economic development, and progress in expanding health coverage in Latin America has been skewed across income levels. Health Services in Latin America and Asia takes a close look at how countries in both regions provide health care services, including the strategies that work and the problems that persist. The book documents encouraging progress in Bolivia, Brazil, China and Vietnam, and important preventive care programs in Central America and Thailand. It also examines health services in Chile, Colombia, the Philippines and Malaysia, as well as the health system and insurance model in Japan.Even though public and preventive health require specific and sustained allocations, both regions continue to use health insurance and other supply mechanisms to expand health service coverage. The book recommends broadening the supply of services through family doctors and community health workers, an alternative approach that would likely improve the equity, efficiency and sustainability of services.
