Book excerpt: Categoru00eda: Living with DiabetesHealth-related quality of life among children aged 8 to 12 years with type 1 diabetes and their parentsAuthors: Suarez, Andrea- Vidal, Melina. Facultad de Psicologu00eda-Universidad Nacional de Cu00f3rdobaBackground: Varni, Limbers and Burwinkle1 developed an investigation in which patients with diabetes and their parents reported a lower Health Related Quality of Life (HRQL) compared to healthy groups. In the work developed by Kalyva et al.2, it has been found that parents value a lower perception of health-related quality of life than that perceived by children. The research of Roizen, Figueroa and Salvia3 found the marked differences in the emotional block from the evaluation of the patients and their parents. Objectives: To know the perception of the quality of life related to the health of children between 8 and 12 years with type 1 diabetes and also the perception that parents have about their children. Associate and correlate HRQOL with Diabetologic Education Cycle, Medical Social Coverage and disease evolution time.Method: descriptive and analytical, cross-sectional study. The generic Pediatric Quality of Life 4.0 instrument was administered through a closed interview. Data were processed using Stata software, version 14.Results: There are no significant differences for the total scores in the perception of HRQoL between the patients and their parents. However, the marked differences in block analysis are appreciated, since in terms of emotional functioning since parents score less than children. In the school block and in the physical, there were significant differences in which the children scored lower than their parents. Regarding the social block, there were no significant differences. It is observed that there is no association between the variable of assistance to the Diabetic Education Cycle and the perception of HRQoL. There is a strong association between private medical social coverage and a better perception of HRQoL. There is a decrease in the quality of life in children over time.Discussion: In general, patients and parents evaluated a very similar health-related quality of life. However, the interventions in the emotional field since it is the dimension that more differences present. Also, hay that takes into account factors that deteriorate the quality of life as the lack of private medical coverage and the evolution of disease time.Bibliography:1.Varni J.W., Limbers C.A. Book Synthesizing Qualitative Research

Download or read book Synthesizing Qualitative Research written by Karin Hannes and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-10-13 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A considerable number of journal publications using a range of qualitative synthesis approaches has been published. Mary Dixon-Woods and colleagues (Mary Dixon-Woods, Booth, & Sutton, 2007) identified 42 qualitative evidence synthesis papers published in health care literature between 1990 and 2004. An ongoing update by Hannes and Macaitis (2010)identified around 100 additional qualitative or mixed methods syntheses. Yet these generally lack a clear, detailed description of what was done and why (Greenhalgh et al, 2007; McInnes & Wimpenny, 2008). Choices are most commonly influenced by what others have successfully used in the past or by a particular school of thought (Atkins et al, 2008; Britten et al, 2002). This is a substantive limitation. This book brings balance to the options available to researchers, including approaches that have not had a substantial uptake among researchers. It provides arguments for when and why researchers or other parties of interest should opt for a certain approach to synthesis, which challenges they might face in adopting it and what the potential strengths and weaknesses are compared with other approaches. This book acts as a resource for readers who would otherwise have to piece together the methodology from a range of journal articles. In addition, it should stimulate further development and documentation of synthesis methodology in a field that is characterized by diversity.

Book Physical Fitness and Health Related Quality of Life in Children and Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

Download or read book Physical Fitness and Health Related Quality of Life in Children and Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus written by Andrea Lukács and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Type 1 diabetes is one of the commonest chronic diseases in childhood affecting many children worldwide. In the routine care of diabetes, mainly the clinical parameters are controlled and little attention is paid to the physical fitness status and quality of life assessment. Diabetic youths live similar lives to their healthy peers, but little is known about the burden of the disease. It would be important to understand how the disease and the clinical conditions influence on patients' health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and physical fitness. In this work, we culturally adapted the Pediatric Quality of Life inventory 3.0 Diabetes Module and searched the disease-specific factors affecting the patients' HRQoL. We compared the HRQoL and physical fitness status of children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes and compared with non-diabetic age-matched controls. We also evaluated the HRQoL from both the children and the parent's perspective in diabetic and control groups. Our results are likely interesting for health care experts involved in diabetes management, parents, teachers and anybody who wants to have overall pictures about the type 1 diabetes.

Book The Relation Between Family Functioning Health related Quality of Life and Metabolic Control in Children and Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes

Download or read book The Relation Between Family Functioning Health related Quality of Life and Metabolic Control in Children and Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes written by Kelly A. Lawrence and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between family functioning, health-related quality of life, and metabolic control in order to identify areas for intervention that can improve medical and psychosocial outcomes for children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes. Children (N = 45) ages 8-17, both male and female, with type 1 diabetes, along with one caregiver (parent or legal guardian) (N = 45) were asked to complete the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) generic and diabetes-specific form to assess health-related quality of life along with the Diabetes Family Behavior Checklist and the Family Relationship Index of the Family Environment Scale to assess family functioning. Recent Hemoglobin A1c (A1c) was obtained from the physician at their visit or by parent report to assess metabolic control. Results indicated a significant relationship with poorer metabolic control relating to poorer physical health-related quality of life, as reported by children. All reports indicated a significant correlation between metabolic control and both general and diabetes specific health-related quality of life. There was a significant relationship with mother ̓s educational level on the outcome variables; educational level was therefore used as a control variable in all regression analyses. Child-reported general family functioning accounted for a significant amount of variance in child reported general health-related quality of life. Parent score on the non-supportive scale for diabetes specific family functioning accounted for a significant amount of variance in parent reported general health-related quality of life and diabetes specific health-related quality of life for their child. Results demonstrated the importance of obtaining both child and parent perspectives on issues regarding general family functioning and health-related quality of life and diabetes specific family functioning and health-related quality of life. In addition, they illustrated the importance of assessing health-related quality of life for children with diabetes as opposed to merely looking at the physical effects.

Book Measuring Health Related Quality of Life in Children and Adolescents

Download or read book Measuring Health Related Quality of Life in Children and Adolescents written by Dennis Drotar and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume's purpose is to describe concepts and methods concerning assessment of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in children and adolescents with a special focus on chronic health conditions. The impetus for this book came from a recognition of the increasing importance of HRQOL assessments in the evaluation of treatment outcomes and the need to increase the utilization of HRQOL assessments in research and clinical applications with a range of pediatric populations. The need to develop a volume that describes new research and clinical applications concerning this topic stemmed from several recent developments. There is a continuing need for evaluations of the efficacy of medical treatments for children and adolescents, including those with chronic health conditions. To address these critical unmet needs in the field of HRQOL assessment, and to advance scientific methods and clinical applications in this field, a conference was held at Case Western Reserve University. The conference set out to summarize current information concerning the development and implementation of measures of HRQOL assessment, to identify and consider key conceptual and methodological issues in research concerning the measurement of HRQOL, and to recommend priorities to advance the state-of-the-art in research and clinical applications of QOL assessment in children and adolescents with chronic health conditions. This volume summarizes and synthesizes the information that was presented by the conference participants in a series of lively discussions and chapters that were based on the presentations.

Book Transitions Through Adolescence

Download or read book Transitions Through Adolescence written by Julia A. Graber and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The adolescent period has attracted much attention as an ideal period for investigating interactive models incorporating biological maturation with intra- and interpersonal development. The focus of this volume is on adolescent transitions in three domains: the peer system, the family system, and school and work contexts. Its goal is to highlight specific aspects of innovative research programs and initiatives, and look forward to future directions in the field. Because interest in adolescence has spanned the disciplines, this volume reflects a multidisciplinary perspective--presenting research and methods from life-span development, sociology, anthropology, and education to provide exemplars of the range of approaches used in understanding the processes and transitions of adolescent development. These exemplars encompass the breadth not only of the investigation of adolescence--from survey research on drug use to ethnographic studies of involvement in criminal activities--but also of individual differences in the experience of adolescent transitions--from the transition to college and work in White, middle-class youth to the work experiences of urban, African-American high school students. The chapters collected here offer a rich sample of the diversity of research experience with an emphasis on in-depth investigation of adolescent transitions. The volume will serve as a resource to investigators across several disciplines as it identifies approaches and recent findings from alternate fields.
