Three well-known leaders in their fields—award-winning dog photographer Jesse Freidin, adolescent HIV+ specialist Dr. Robert Garofalo, and LGBTQ advocate and journalist Zach Stafford—offer a refreshing, beautiful, and unique portrait of HIV infused with a deep message of hope. Each extraordinary profile shows the power of the incredible bonds between humans and their canine companions, whether that means combating loneliness and stigma, discovering the importance of unconditional love, overcoming addiction, or simply having a best friend in a time of need. When Dogs Heal shares the stories of a diverse set of people who are thriving and celebrating life thanks to the compassion and unconditional love of their dogs. Book excerpt: “Nathalia Holt presents a thorough account of the research that provides scientists with hope that a cure will one day be achievable... and her empathy shines through in her prose. This is as important a social history as it is a medical document.”—The Daily Beast Two patients—each known in medical history as the Berlin Patient—were cured of the HIV virus. The two patients’ disparate cures came twelve years apart, but Nathalia Holt, an award-winning scientist at the forefront of HIV research, connects the molecular dots of these cases for the first time. Scientists are known to maintain a professional distance from those they study, but sometimes scientists are not just investigators, they are caregivers, too. Cured illustrates that even in the era of high-tech and big pharma, the way doctors and patients communicate remains a critical ingredient in the advance of this science. Holt offers a kind of hope that the thirty-four million people currently infected with HIV need and a story of ingenuity, dedication, and humanity that will inspire the rest of us.

Download or read book Fierce Medicines Fragile Socialities written by Dominik Mattes and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2019-08-01 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in Tanga, a city on the Tanzanian Swahili coast, Dominik Mattes examines the implementation of antiretroviral HIV-treatment (ART) in the area, exploring the manifold infrastructural and social fragilities of treatment provision in public HIV clinics as well as patients’ multi-layered struggles of coming to terms with ART in their everyday lives. Based on extensive ethnographic fieldwork, the book shows that, notwithstanding the massive rollout of ART, providing treatment and living a life with HIV in settings like Tanga continue to entail social, economic, and moral challenges and long-term uncertainties, which contradict the global rhetoric of the “normalization of HIV”.

Book Nutrition and HIV

    Book Details:
  • Author : Saurabh Mehta
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2018-05-15
  • ISBN : 1351058185
  • Pages : 326 pages

Download or read book Nutrition and HIV written by Saurabh Mehta and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world continues to lose more than a million lives each year to the HIV epidemic, and nearly two million individuals were infected with HIV in 2017 alone. The new Sustainable Development Goals, adopted by countries of the United Nations in September 2015, include a commitment to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030. Considerable emphasis on prevention of new infections and treatment of those living with HIV will be needed to make this goal achievable. With nearly 37 million people now living with HIV, it is a communicable disease that behaves like a noncommunicable disease. Nutritional management is integral to comprehensive HIV care and treatment. Improved nutritional status and weight gain can increase recovery and strength of individuals living with HIV/AIDS, improve dietary diversity and caloric intake, and improve quality of life. This book highlights evidence-based research linking nutrition and HIV and identifies research gaps to inform the development of guidelines and policies for the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. A comprehensive approach that includes nutritional interventions is likely to maximize the benefit of antiretroviral therapy in preventing HIV disease progression and other adverse outcomes in HIV-infected men and women. Modification of nutritional status has been shown to enhance the quality of life of those suffering HIV/AIDS, both physically in terms of improved body mass index and immunological markers, and psychologically, by improving symptoms of depression. While the primary focus for those infected should remain on antiretroviral treatment and increasing its availability and coverage, improvement of nutritional status plays a complementary role in the management of HIV infection.

Book Singing For Life

  • Pages : 270 pages

Download or read book Singing For Life written by Gregory Barz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-17 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Efforts within the past decade to address the HIV/AIDS pandemic in sub-Saharan Africa have dealt with HIV/AIDS principally as a medical concern—despite the fact that doctors continue to be confronted with the complex relationship of the disease to broader social issues. When medical and governmental institutions fail, artists step in. Contemporary performances in Uganda often focus on gender and health-related issues specific to women and youths, in which song texts warn against risky sexual environments or unprotected sexual behavior. Music, dance, and drama are principal tools of local initiatives that disseminate information, mobilize resources, and raise societal consciousness regarding issues related to HIV/AIDS. Through case studies, song texts, interviews, and testimonies, Singing for Life: HIV/AIDS and Music in Uganda examines the links between the decline in Uganda’s infection rate and grassroots efforts that make use of music, dance, and drama. Only when supported and encouraged by such performances drawing on localized musical traditions have medical initiatives taken root and flourished in local healthcare systems. Gregory Barz shows how music can be both a mode of promoting health and a force for personal therapy, presenting a cultural analysis of hope and healing.

Download or read book Compassionate Care written by Lee Ann B. Marino and published by Apostolic University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-15 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AT the current rate of HIV infection, statistics suggest one out of every two people will be infected with HIV by 2025. With such a staggering realization, the world has responded with education, information, and disease prevention. Despite expanded care and treatment for HIV and AIDS patients, most note a lack of spiritual response toward HIV and AIDS education and treatment. Patients are too often treated as a disease, rather than as people in need of healing, love, and compassion. With a lack of spiritual response, the question remains...what is the appropriate spiritual response to HIV? In this book, Dr. Lee Ann B. Marino, Ph.D., D.Min., D.D. takes the reader on an educational and compassionate journey toward a complete understanding of HIV/AIDS patient care. Purposed to awaken Christian response to HIV as the media focuses attention on other diseases, problems, and ailments, this book educates Christian believers, ministers, and leaders about the essentials of healing response to HIV. Designed to make medical, educational, and spiritual responses to HIV practical and understandable, Dr. Marino gives a unique, powerful, and anointed perspective to this very sensitive and overlooked issue of our times. In this revised and updated edition, Dr. Marino lays out the challenge, information, and empowerment to overcome bias, superstition, judgment, and bigotries to stand as agents of God's healing touch to a sick and dying world. As the reader focuses on Jesus' call in Matthew 25 as a witness to Christ, HIV becomes an opportunity to minister life and health instead of judgment and fear.
