Download or read book Healing Egypt Improving Human Rights Social Cohesion and Education in the Arab Republic of Egypt written by Dr. Mark O'Doherty and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Abdel Fatah al-Sisi seized power in a bloody coup in 2013, Egypt has descended into a country of military dictatorship. Once a cradle of civilization of the highest spiritual integrity, Egypt today is a country which needs healing on many levels - socially, economically, politically and spiritually. Critical, but also deeply sensitive and humane, this book endeavours to improve public policy in Egypt, so that a just social peace can be manifested in the country. Social challenges - such as democratic deficit, press freedom violations and police brutality - are also explored, as well as suggestions how public- and religious education can be improved. Violent Extremism is another topic this book addresses; as both internally and externally, the region is faced with major security problems in terms of countering extremism. Highly innovative and profound, this book explores social scientific-, ethical- and Islamic approaches how human rights and social cohesion can be improved in Egypt.

Book Healing Syria Improving Human Rights Social Cohesion and Religious Education in the Syrian Arab Republic

Download or read book Healing Syria Improving Human Rights Social Cohesion and Religious Education in the Syrian Arab Republic written by Dr. Mark O'Doherty and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Countless children - many of them under five years old - are trapped in north-east Syria after fleeing areas held by Islamic State during the recent escalation in fighting; according to the NGO 'Save the Children'. Amid efforts by European countries to repatriate children, the figures underline the scale and difficulty of the problem to evacuate the children. Children who lived under Isis have witnessed appalling acts of brutality, including beheadings, and may have been left with physical injuries and psychological needs from years of conflict and repression. While the NGO welcomed a recent shift in the UK government's stance towards providing "safe passage" for British orphans to come to the UK, it said the vast majority of the children were with their mothers and all had been swept up in horrific events beyond their control... Hence the international community urgently needs to ensure that ALL children in war-torn Syria are being provided with safety, protection and health care; as stipulated by the UNCRC.

Book World Development Report 2018

Download or read book World Development Report 2018 written by World Bank Group and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year, the World Bank’s World Development Report (WDR) features a topic of central importance to global development. The 2018 WDR—LEARNING to Realize Education’s Promise—is the first ever devoted entirely to education. And the time is right: education has long been critical to human welfare, but it is even more so in a time of rapid economic and social change. The best way to equip children and youth for the future is to make their learning the center of all efforts to promote education. The 2018 WDR explores four main themes: First, education’s promise: education is a powerful instrument for eradicating poverty and promoting shared prosperity, but fulfilling its potential requires better policies—both within and outside the education system. Second, the need to shine a light on learning: despite gains in access to education, recent learning assessments reveal that many young people around the world, especially those who are poor or marginalized, are leaving school unequipped with even the foundational skills they need for life. At the same time, internationally comparable learning assessments show that skills in many middle-income countries lag far behind what those countries aspire to. And too often these shortcomings are hidden—so as a first step to tackling this learning crisis, it is essential to shine a light on it by assessing student learning better. Third, how to make schools work for all learners: research on areas such as brain science, pedagogical innovations, and school management has identified interventions that promote learning by ensuring that learners are prepared, teachers are both skilled and motivated, and other inputs support the teacher-learner relationship. Fourth, how to make systems work for learning: achieving learning throughout an education system requires more than just scaling up effective interventions. Countries must also overcome technical and political barriers by deploying salient metrics for mobilizing actors and tracking progress, building coalitions for learning, and taking an adaptive approach to reform.

Book The Road Not Traveled

Download or read book The Road Not Traveled written by Ahmed Galal and published by Mena Development Report. This book was released on 2008 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Education is a powerful force that can speed up economic growth, improve income distribution, facilitate social mobility, and reduce poverty. It can also improve the quality of life for citizens by contributing to longer life expectancy, lower fertility and infant mortality rates, and a more cohesive national identity. However, none of these positive outcomes are automatic. All too often, investment in education generates low returns to the individuals involved and society at large. Thus, while investment in education is a necessary condition for faster development and prosperity, it is by no means sufficient. This MENA flagship report explores whether past investments in education in the region have generated their maximum economic returns, and, if not, why they have failed to do so. Ultimately, the answers to these questions are being sought to help policymakers chart more fruitful strategies in the future." -- Overview (p. 1).

Emphasizing the importance of cultural diversity in different areas (languages, education, communication and new media development, and creativity and the marketplace) based on data and examples collected from around the world, the report is also intended for the general public. It proposes a coherent vision of cultural diversity and clarifies how, far from being a threat, it can become beneficial to the action of the international community.

Book Education Human Rights and Peace in Sustainable Development

Download or read book Education Human Rights and Peace in Sustainable Development written by Maigul Nugmanova and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2020-11-19 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of sustainable development is to balance our economic, environmental and social needs, allowing prosperity for current and future generations. Countries must be allowed to meet their basic needs of employment, food, energy, water and sanitation. There is a clear relationship between the three topics of the book: right to education has been recognized as a human right - education has a role in peace-building. Additionally, education, human rights and peace have a significant role in sustainable development. The United Nations have defined a broad range of internationally accepted rights, including civil, cultural, economic, political and social rights. However, this book demonstrates that there are still people and nations not respecting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Chapters from Brazil, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Kazakhstan, Israel, Peru, Russia and South-Africa cover topics like civil war, human abuses, the vulnerability of indigenous people, abortion, epilepsy, food security, lack of health equities in maternal and child health, and democracy or lack of it. We sincerely hope that this book will contribute to the joint pursuit of humanity to make the world better after we all get over the coronavirus pandemic.

Book Girls Education in the Twenty first Century

Download or read book Girls Education in the Twenty first Century written by Mercy Tembon and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Persuasive evidence demonstrates that gender equality in education is central to economic development. Despite more than two decades of accumulated knowledge and evidence of what works in improving gender equality, progress on the ground remains slow and uneven across countries. What is missing? Given that education is a critical path to accelerate progress toward gender equality and the empowerment of women, what is holding us back? These questions were discussed at the global symposium Education: A Critical Path to Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment, which was sponsored by the World Bank in October 2007. Girls' Education in the 21st Century is based on background papers developed for the symposium. The book's chapters reflect the current state of knowledge on education from a gender perspective and highlight the importance of, and challenges to, female education, as well as the interdependence of education and development objectives. The last chapter presents five strategic directions for advancing gender equality in education and their implications for World Bank operations. Girls' Education in the 21st Century will be of particular interest to researchers, educators, school administrators, and policy makers at the global, national, regional, and municipal levels.
