Book Under the Big Sky

Download or read book Under the Big Sky written by Jackson J. Benson and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2009-05-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author of The Way West and the screenplay for the classic Shane, among many other timeless stories, icon of Western literature A. B. "Bud" Guthrie Jr. brought a blazing realism to the story of the West. That realism came out of the depth of Guthrie's historical research and an acuity that had seldom been seen in the work of Western novelists. The small Montana town that figures in several of Guthrie's books is clearly patterned after the town where he grew up, Choteau, on the eastern front of the Rocky Mountains. Biographer Benson illuminates Guthrie's upbringing and education, the influence of his intellectually inclined father, his work as a newspaperman in Kentucky, and his time at Harvard University. Animated by the observations of friends, family, and fellow authors, this intimate account offers rare insight into the life and work of a remarkable writer and into the making of the literary West.--From publisher description.

This book was released on 2019-06-30 with total page 1014 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now it is possible for the first time to trace in a systematic way the language patterns of one of the greatest poets who have written in English, W. B. Yeats. Like A Concordance to the Poems of Matthew Arnold, the first of the Cornell Concordances that are under the general editorship of Professor Parrish, this volume was produced on an IBM 704 electronic data-processing machine. Computer technique has so advanced that the Yeats concordance includes punctuation and gives cross references for the second parts of hyphenated words. The frequency of every word in Yeats's poems is given, and an appendix lists all indexed words in order of frequency. The body of this book consists of an index of all significant words in Yeats, each word listed in the line or lines in which it occurs. The concordance is based on the variorum text of Yeats, edited by Alspach and Allt, and includes all variants that occur in printed versions of Yeats's poems.

Download or read book Goodness God and Evil written by David E. Alexander and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2012-05-24 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most contemporary versions of moral realism are beset with difficulties. Many of these difficulties arise because of a faulty conception of the nature of goodness. Goodness, God, and Evil lays out and defends a new version of moral realism that re-conceives the nature of goodness. Alexander argues that the adjective 'good' is best thought of as an attributive adjective and not as a predicative one. In other words, the adjective 'good' logically cannot be detached from the noun (or noun phrase) that it modifies. It is further argued that this conception of the function of the adjective implies that recent attempts to provide necessary a posteriori identities between goodness and something else must fail. The convertibility of being and goodness, the privation theory of evil, a denial of the fact-value distinction, human nature as the ground of human morality and even a novel argument for the existence of God are some of the implications of the account of goodness that Alexander offers.
