Book excerpt: Preservation of natural and cultural heritage is often said to be something that is done for the future, or on behalf of future generations, but the precise relationship of such practices to the future is rarely reflected upon. Heritage Futures draws on research undertaken over four years by an interdisciplinary, international team of 16 researchers and more than 25 partner organisations to explore the role of heritage and heritage-like practices in building future worlds. Engaging broad themes such as diversity, transformation, profusion and uncertainty, Heritage Futures aims to understand how a range of conservation and preservation practices across a number of countries assemble and resource different kinds of futures, and the possibilities that emerge from such collaborative research for alternative approaches to heritage in the Anthropocene. Case studies include the cryopreservation of endangered DNA in frozen zoos, nuclear waste management, seed biobanking, landscape rewilding, social history collecting, space messaging, endangered language documentation, built and natural heritage management, domestic keeping and discarding practices, and world heritage site management.

Book excerpt: Go Girl the exhibition is a series of large-scale photographs documenting the emergence of New Zealand's gay, lesbian and transgender scene in early 1970's Auckland. The photographs are being presented for the first time since two images from the series caused an outrage when they toured the country in 1975, before eventually being stolen. The show is the outcome of a 30 year project by Taranaki photographic artist Fiona Clark, and features video interviews with many of the original subjects, giving the show a contemporary update. Go Girl the catalogue features all of the images from this exhibition and many more photographs chronicling the coming out of New Zealand's gay, lesbian and transgender communities. The catalogue features significant new writing on the subject by David Lyndon-Brown and Blair French, and an in-depth interview with the artist by the show's curator Gregory Burke. This is an ambitious catalogue, supporting one of the most acclaimed exhibitions of the year.

Book The Merrier

Download or read book The Merrier written by Miranda Parkes and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Drawing on the expanded field of painting, Miranda Parkes makes art that speaks to the bodily experience and subjectivity of abstraction. Known for her puffed, twisting, bulging, works, she treats painting as a spatial medium and creates works that are physical, sculptural and material. The language of painting and textual references filter through her new body of work for 'the merrier', in which she playfully alludes to the overlap between art, poetry and everyday life. In testing the qualities of her materials, Parkes simultaneously reveres and rejects the ideals of modernism. If painting is a text, Parkes questions not what is written, but how it is read, and by whom?"--Publisher description.

Book Necessary Distraction

Download or read book Necessary Distraction written by Auckland Art Gallery and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Discover a new vigour in recent New Zealand painting in this ambitious multi-artist exhibition. Responding to the question 'What can painting offer that other art forms cannot?', the artworks selected and commissioned for this survey share a focus on material and form, and are deliberately open ended. Through suggestion and proposition, the artists invite us into conversations that, rather than being constrained by the ties of narrative painting, are speculative and forward-looking. Experience diverse work by 20 established and emerging painters and witness a future for painting that's still in the making."--Publisher description.
