Book excerpt: As seen on PBS’s POV An unprecedented guide to helping black boys achieve success at every stage of their lives—at home, at school, and in the world Regardless of how wealthy or poor their parents are, all black boys must confront and surmount the “achievement gap”: a divide that shows up not only in our sons’ test scores, but in their social and emotional development, their physical well-being, and their outlook on life. As children, they score as high on cognitive tests as their peers, but at some point, the gap emerges. Why? This is the question Joe Brewster, M.D., and Michèle Stephenson asked when their own son, Idris, began struggling in a new school. As they filmed his experiences for their award-winning documentary American Promise, they met an array of researchers who had not only identified the reasons for the gap, but had come up with practical, innovative solutions to close it. In Promises Kept, they explain • how to influence your son’s brain before he’s even born • how to tell the difference between authoritarian and authoritative discipline—and why it matters • how to create an educational program for your son that matches his needs • how to prepare him for explicit and implicit racism in school and in the wider world • how to help your child develop resilience, self-discipline, emotional intelligence, and a positive outlook that will last a lifetime Filled with innovative research, practical strategies, and the voices of parents and children who are grappling with these issues firsthand, Promises Kept will challenge your assumptions and inspire you to make sure your child isn’t lost in the gap. Praise for Promises Kept “The authors offer a plethora of information and advice geared toward the specific developmental needs of black boys. . . . Thorough and detailed, this guidebook is also a call to action. As Brewster sees it, when people of color remain complacent, they not only break a tacit promise to future generations to achieve social equity, they also imperil the futures of both the nation and the planet. A practical and impassioned parenting guide.”—Kirkus Reviews “A penetrating look at the standard practices, at school and at home, that contribute to the achievement gap between the races and the sexes that seems to put black boys at a disadvantage. [Brewster and Stephenson] debunk myths and offer ten parenting and education strategies to improve the prospects for black boys to help them overcome racial stereotypes and low expectations. . . . This is a practical and insightful look at the particular challenges of raising black males.”—Booklist

His gift of love to you, however, is the most precious of them all. If godly love is your one talent, it is yours to continually refine throughout your life. In order to continually grow in godly love, God's Word must be your road map. In his letter he reveals its seven qualities. You will find in God Loves You: Notes of His Love that each chapter is dedicated to studying a quality of love. As you study each chapter you become a student of God's love. You investigate for yourself how to live an entire life of continual growth in ever-abounding love for your Heavenly Father God, your dear ones, and all humanity. After you devote your entire life to successfully studying and living godly love, you will appear before your Heavenly Father God. When He sees your soul beaming the seven qualities of godly love, He will tell you "Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your Master's happiness!"

Book Oxford Studies in Agency and Responsibility

Download or read book Oxford Studies in Agency and Responsibility written by David Shoemaker and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2015-09-17 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oxford Studies in Agency and Responsibility is a series of volumes presenting outstanding new work on a set of connected themes, investigating such questions as: · What does it mean to be an agent? · What is the nature of moral responsibility? Of criminal responsibility? What is the relation between moral and criminal responsibility (if any)? · What is the relation between responsibility and the metaphysical issues of determinism and free will? · What do various psychological disorders tell us about agency and responsibility? · How do moral agents develop? How does this developmental story bear on questions about the nature of moral judgment and responsibility? · What do the results from neuroscience imply (if anything) for our questions about agency and responsibility? OSAR thus straddles the areas of moral philosophy and philosophy of action, but also draws from a diverse range of cross-disciplinary sources, including moral psychology, psychology proper (including experimental and developmental), philosophy of psychology, philosophy of law, legal theory, metaphysics, neuroscience, neuroethics, political philosophy, and more. It is unified by its focus on who we are as deliberators and (inter)actors, embodied practical agents negotiating (sometimes unsuccessfully) a world of moral and legal norms.

Download or read book The Promise written by A.B. Michaels and published by Red Trumpet Press. This book was released on 2016-06-24 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HE’LL RISK EVERYTHING TO KEEP HIS WORD ... If The Golden City Will Let Him. April 18, 1906: A massive earthquake has decimated much of San Francisco, leaving thousands without food, water or shelter. Patrolling the streets to help those in need, Army corporal Ben Tilson meets a young woman named Charlotte who touches his heart, making him think of a future with her in it. In the heat of the moment he makes a promise to her family that even he realizes will be almost impossible to keep. Because on the heels of the earthquake, a much worse disaster looms: a fire that threatens to consume everything and everyone in its path. It will take everything Ben’s got to make it back to the woman he's fallen for—and even that may not be enough. The Promise is a novella capturing one of the most dramatic events in American history. Chronologically, it is Book Three in A.B.Michaels' historical fiction series "The Golden City." Other titles in the series include The Art of Love, The Depth of Beauty, The Price of Compassion, Josephine's Daughter and The Madness of Mrs. Whittaker. All titles in this series are stand-alone reads. From Editorial and Reader Reviews:. "… a compact and delightful little volume. Set during the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 and the aftermath, this story is concerned with two characters who meet by chance, one trying to survive the quake and the other tasked with trying to ensure San Francisco itself survives... It is a good read and I was moved to tears at one point towards the end. Don't let its brevity put you off; it is a sweet book and well worth a read.” Nicky Galliers/Historical Novel Society “As with all of A B Michaels books, I was impressed at the level of research she did to set this story in the midst of the great earthquake and fire that destroyed 80% of the beautiful town of San Francisco in 1906.You feel as though you’re among the throngs of people carting what belongings they could to escape the fire as it destroyed their homes and businesses.” Djaq (Amazon review) “As a rule, I'm not a big fan of novellas. It takes a skilled writer to pack all the elements of a good story into such an abbreviated format, and all too often the results seem contrived, rushed, and just plain lacking. I'm delighted to say that "The Promise: A Story of the Quake," was none of the above. I was hooked from the start and inhaled the tale in one very satisfactory sitting. Once again, Michaels has done her research and it shows in this beautifully crafted story.” Sgharris (Amazon review) For more information, please visit abmichaels.com.

Book Guidebook for Instruction in the Christian Religion

Download or read book Guidebook for Instruction in the Christian Religion written by Herman Bavinck and published by Hendrickson Publishers. This book was released on 2022-03-15 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “In writing this Guidebook,” Bavinck says in his preface, “I had in mind, the pupils in the highest classes of our Christian gymnasium, public schools, in the education of teachers, and in normal schools, etc. and moreover those who desire to understand the main content of our Christian, Reformed confession of faith through a not too comprehensive or expensive book.” Herman Bavinck completed Guidebook for Instruction in the Christian Religion in 1913 and reprinted it in the Netherlands in 1931. He originally intended it for high school students and Christians of every confession. Bavinck’s goal was to make Christians more familiar with the rich, deep thoughts of Scripture as universally expressed in the Christian faith. Guidebook for Instruction in the Christian Religion is an introductory systematic theology by one of the foremost theologians of the past century. Alongside The Sacrifice of Praise, this is Bavinck at his best doing catechetical theology. To this end, Bavinck sets off to explain in a simplified manner the main contents of the Christian religion, even giving it a title that is a tip of the hat to John Calvin’s Institute of the Christian Religion. While Bavinck’s lengthy Reformed Dogmatics is an academic work, Guidebook for Instruction serves a more egalitarian aim. It is a theological guide for the everyday person in the pew. In this one—and much shorter—volume, Bavinck walks Christian readers through all the major topics covered in Reformed Dogmatics with theological depth and insight.

At the last two camps he was sent to work in a parachute factory. There, he was sentenced to death by a German civil court for arson, but the SS claimed jurisdiction over him because he was a number and not a person, thereby saving him. He was liberated by the Russians in May 1945 and emigrated to the U.S. in 1949. An appendix on pp. 153-174 relates the fate of the Piotrkow Jews in the Holocaust.

Download or read book Cracking the Code written by Thom Hartmann and published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers. This book was released on 2008-09-02 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the bestselling author and XM and Sirius Satellite radio host heard on more than eighty radio stations coast to coast seven days a week Shows progressives how to master the science and technology of persuasive communication and counter the right-wing message machine Offers exercises and examples throughout to help readers put the concepts they’re learning into practice Millions of working Americans talk, act, and vote as if their economic interests match those of the megawealthy, the multinational corporations, and the politicians who do their bidding. How did this happen? According to Air America radio host Thom Hartmann, the apologists of the Right have become masters of the subtle and largely subconscious aspects of political communication. It’s not an escalation in Iraq, it’s a surge; it’s not the inheritance tax, it’s the death tax; it’s not drilling for oil, it’s exploring for energy. Conservatives didn’t intuit the path to persuasive messaging—they learned these techniques. There is no reason why progressives can’t learn them too. In Cracking the Code, Hartmann shows you how. Drawing on his background as a psychotherapist and advertising executive as well as a national radio host, he breaks down the science and technology of effective communication so you can apply it to your own efforts to counter right-wing disinformation. It’s both an art and a science—as Hartmann explains, political persuasion is as much about biology as ideology, about knowing how the brain processes information and how that influences the way people perceive messages, make decisions, and form a worldview. Throughout the book, Hartmann shows you precisely how to master this technology, providing examples dating back to the time of the Founding Fathers. As you read deeply in this book, you’ll see things you hadn’t realized were there—in everything from advertising to political rants—and discover abilities you didn’t know you had. Whether you’re a politician, an activist, a volunteer, or a concerned citizen, you’ll develop a strong sense for how to reach into that part of the collective human psyche where we truly do have the power to create a new world.
