Book He Always Still Tastes Like Dynamite

Download or read book He Always Still Tastes Like Dynamite written by Trevor Dodge and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiction. Flash Fiction. HE ALWAYS STILL TASTES LIKE DYNAMITE is a flash-fictional evisceration of toxic masculinity, a difficult yet tender exploration of the implicit and explicit violences men do to those they are afraid to love, those they pretend to hate, and those hearts, minds, and bodies they nervously call their own. In stories set amidst the sagebrush and clay of drive-through territories of the contemporary intermountain West, Trevor Dodge writes honestly and forcefully about characters trapped inside the cartoon performances intoned from having watched John Wayne movies, listened to Toby Keith albums, and suffered George W. Bush's America. Here language dances between the highly abstract and grittily realistic, between the structurally provocative as well as the emotionally stark. Dodge's latest short story collection delivers scenes of domestic realism in an array of inventive, energetic, and poignant prose styles that invite readers to both literally and figuratively read between the lines. You know those postage stamps with the big pink heart on them? This is what Trevor Dodge asks us to remember in this collection. This book is that stamp. What's so funny 'bout peace, love and understanding tipped at strange angles? Nothing, Dodge tells us with conviction. Nothing at all.--Rafael Alvarez

Book The Global Vampire

Download or read book The Global Vampire written by Cait Coker and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-01-10 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The media vampire has roots throughout the world, far beyond the shores of the usual Dracula-inspired Anglo-American archetypes. Depending on text and context, the vampire is a figure of anxiety and comfort, humor and fear, desire and revulsion. These dichotomies gesture the enduring prevalence of the vampire in mass culture; it can no longer articulate a single feeling or response, bound by time and geography, but is many things to many people. With a global perspective, this collection of essays offers something new and different: a much needed counter-narrative of the vampire's evolution in popular culture. Divided by geography, this text emphasizes the vampiric as a globetrotting citizen du monde rather than an isolated monster.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thrilling story sets in cosmopolitan Dubai follows the lives of characters who, despite their wildly different backgrounds and heritages, are brought together by a determination to survive in a world where sex is a commodity and terrorism and business go hand in hand. Waleed Adam, who goes under the name of ‘the prince,’ is a victim of political complications and conflict in the Middle East and ends up as a gang leader. His trusted assistant Salem flees to Iraq and joins forces with the Cobra Group, which is involved in drug smuggling, among other things. As he doesn’t want to be involved with drugs or take a minor role in the gang, the prince flees Syria to start a new life in Dubai. He is soon living in a nightmare and risks becoming a victim of the proxy war in that part of the world. The prince takes the opportunity to run the 10 Tola Bar, a haven for the elite looking for fun and prostitutes struggling to live. Most of the bar regulars have fled dictator regimes as he has. One of these is Sonya, a Russian dominatrix and prostitute, who has recently arrived from Libya. Her involvement with high-ranking officers and officials close to Muammar al-Gaddafi leads her to work for Russian intelligence. Also, there is Ana, one of the millions of victims of Mao Zedong, the founding father of the People’s Republic of China. She is forced to work as a prostitute and later becomes a spy who betrays the prince before meeting a brutal death. Another bar regular is Noor Ali, who considers that Iran is no longer his home while the theocrats are in power. Since leaving, his life has taken an unexpected direction. He becomes involved with the Iranian Office of Liberation Movements and works directly with Major Azartash, an influential officer in the Jerusalem Forces. Noor Ali’s actions create a turning point in Sonya and the prince’s lives when he involves them in a kidnapping mission. He promised Sonya a million dollars if she cooperates in kidnapping her friend Hamad, a Qatar royal family member. The prince is promised the same for acting as a mediator. But the kidnapping mission ends in disaster, leads to horrible consequences of revenge and counter revenge. Through the novel’s breathtaking conflicts, the reader will discover like never before the secret life’s ambiance in the Middle East.

Three intensely private, cantankerous recluses who want no part of Sara’s improvement plans. And one cynical, sexy man with a secret who is equally opposed to change. In his dynamic autobiography, Doug Dane explains the extraordinary circumstances that led to this conflict when his life was threatened, and how he survived. This true story about the author and his wife, Kerri James, is told in graphic terms in HOLDING ON - I Sued the Mafia and Lived to Tell About It (The Story of Sundance Dane and Kerri James). The book took ten years to write. It is the story of a man whose life occupation had been waste recycling, processing, trucking and disposal, with a lifelong goal of developing a system of waste recovery parks throughout the world. An amateur boxer, Dane still competed at age 61, against opponents 30 and 40 years younger than himself. "I have won the Southern California Golden Gloves Championship several times, and I believe that much of age is a state of mind." He was motivated to write his memoir by the brave people who, no matter what the cost, never give up, and "when I re-met my first love." About the Author: Originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan, first-time author Doug Dane now resides with his wife in Santa Barbara, California. The story pictures the life and customs of a few scattered Appalachian mountain families tucked away in hidden coves and hollows and describes a way of life that is largely gone forever.

Using journals and photographs from the expeditions to recreate these historic routes, Sjogren encounters powerful perspectives and stories about land management and human rights issues that carry forth into the present. Mindful of the pervasive effects of colonization and motivated by a deeply personal care for the land, Sjogren asks what it means to be an explorer while learning from the people who have loved the land for millennia and moments.
