Book Ranking Hazardous Waste Sites for Remedial Action

Download or read book Ranking Hazardous Waste Sites for Remedial Action written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1994-02-01 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States may not be able to make all hazardous-waste sites as clean as possible. Therefore, priorities must be set for the timing of waste site remediations. This book assesses several of the government's methods of ranking sites for remediation and compares the performance of three such models using input data developed from the same set of waste sites. Because inconsistent methods may be neither effective nor prudent, the book recommends that the government consider developing a unified national approach to setting priorities to replace the current multiple approaches.

Book Fundamentals of Hazardous Waste Site Remediation

Download or read book Fundamentals of Hazardous Waste Site Remediation written by Kathleen Sellers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every practicing environmental engineer should already have a firm grasp on the basics of hazardous waste site remediation-the key to confronting a site problem, and devising an effective solution. Since their original introduction to remediation, technology has kept moving ahead with new ideas and procedures. Fundamentals of Hazardous Waste Site Remediation gives environmental professionals immediate access to the basics of the trade, along with information about recent advancements. This comprehensive overview examines the basics of such areas as hazardous materials chemistry, hydrogeology, reaction engineering, and clean-up level development. A chapter on Cost Estimating will be of particular interest to specialists, in light of recent concerns about the increased costs of remediation. After reading each chapter, test your new knowledge with the review problems. As a refresher guide for career environmental engineers, or a helpful tool to newcomers in the field, Fundamentals of Hazardous Waste Site Remediation is a valuable resource for longtime professionals and newcomers alike.

Book Risk Based Waste Classification in California

Download or read book Risk Based Waste Classification in California written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-07-14 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) of the State of California Environmental Protection Agency is in the process of complying with the Regulatory Structure Update. The Regulatory Structure Update is a comprehensive review and refocusing of California's system for identifying and regulating management of hazardous wastes. As part of this effort, the DTSC proposes to change its current waste classification system that categorizes wastes as hazardous or nonhazardous based on their toxicity. Under the proposed system there would be two risk-based thresholds rather than the single toxicity threshold currently used to distinguish between the wastes. Wastes that contain specific chemicals at concentrations that exceed the upper threshold will be designated as hazardous; those below the lower threshold will be nonhazardous; and those with chemical concentrations between the two thresholds will be "special" wastes and subject to variances for management and disposal. The proposed DTSC system combines toxicity information with short or long-term exposure information to determine the risks associated with the chemicals. Under section 57004 of the California Health and Safety Code, the scientific basis of the proposed waste classification system is subject to external scientific peer review by the National Academy of Sciences, the University of California, or other similar institution of higher learning or group of scientists. This report addresses that regulatory requirement.

Book An Introduction to the Management and Regulation of Hazardous Waste

Download or read book An Introduction to the Management and Regulation of Hazardous Waste written by Emmett Burris Moore and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains descriptions of the major types of hazardous wastes, the technologies for handling them, and the legal framework within which hazardous waste managers must operate. Written as an introduction to the subject, this book will help those not fully conversant with hazardous wastes or hazardous waste regulations to better understand the federal regulations appropriate to hazardous waste management and cleanup, to become familiar with the major waste types, and to better understand the management and remediation technologies for both active and abandoned hazardous waste sites. It covers the two major federal laws that regulate hazardous wastes: the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, which regulates active hazardous waste sites and newly generated hazardous wastes; and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act, which regulates abandoned or retired hazardous waste sites.

Book Risk Assessment

Download or read book Risk Assessment written by Peter LaGoy and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1994-12-31 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Site-specific risk assessment is the process of evaluating whether or not a site poses a risk to human health or the environment. The purpose of all hazardous waste site remediation is ultimately to render a site safe for human or ecological populations. Consequently, risk assessment, as the process used to measure the effectiveness of the remediation process, is critical to all hazardous waste-site work. Risk assessment at hazardous waste sites involves the use of standard approaches and assumptions in a reasoned, common sense manner. The purpose of this book is to provide practical guidance to people wishing to learn about, conduct, or use risk assessment procedures in evaluating hazardous waste sites. Critical issues, standard formulas and assumptions, and guidance on characterizing risk results in a useable manner are presented. The use of risk assessment as a key tool in selecting appropriate remedial options at hazardous waste sites is also described. Most attention is given to human health risks associated with exposure to toxic chemicals, but descriptions of the strategies used to estimate radiation health risks and to evaluate risks to the environment are also provided. Although most commonly applied to hazardous waste site remediation, the procedures outlined in this book are generally applicable to any situation involving a potential for health risks to an exposed population. This book provides guidance on the mechanics of risk assessment preparation and illustrates these approaches with examples. However, the focus of the book is on the subjective nature of risk assessment, the art rather than the science. The actual risk (i.e., the right answer) can never be known. Consequently, while it is valuable to attempt to obtain the best numeric solution, reasonableness and the application of common sense are equally important. The book therefore devotes a substantial amount of space to issues of uncertainty that are inherent in risk assessment, and the need to address this uncertainty.

Book Resources and References

Download or read book Resources and References written by Donna S. Kocurek and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1995-12-31 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide book provides references and resources for the complex field of hazardous waste and hazardous materials management. The book is divided into general topics such as air quality, industrial wastewater, pollution prevention, and risk assessment under hazardous waste management and chemical hazards, emergency planning, and hazard communication under hazardous materials management. Each individual section includes a list of annotated bibliographies of the most recent books by major publishers as well as established, standard references. Following the annotated titles, are additional references of books and documents by publishers, technical associations, and governmental agencies (primarily the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency). In general, only references from 1986 onward are included since the technology and regulations affecting hazardous waste and materials are constantly evolving. Additional resources included in the book are video tapes for training and instruction, information services and databases, libraries, agency contacts, technical journals, and a list of publishers and ordering information. This book will be a useful reference to professionals in the environmental field who need an extensive, but concise source of technical information and contacts. The book will be a valuable addition to individual libraries and will fill a current reference void in university libraries, and technical libraries in industry and government. At present there are very few technical bibliographies in the field, and none has covered topics related to hazardous materials and hazardous waste as extensively as this book.
