Book Standardized Maps for Hazardous Materials Accidents

Download or read book Standardized Maps for Hazardous Materials Accidents written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Problems reported by emergency response personnel in developing pre-emergency plans and making tactical decisions during hazardous materials transportation emergencies prompted the Safety Board to conduct this special investigation. The investigation disclosed a need to improve methods for predicting the expected behavior of hazardous materials in emergencies, for both preplanning and tactical uses. Existing information sources were found to be inadequate for these purposes. A method to improve the recording of hazardous materials behavior in accident investigations that will improve preplanning and tactical decisionmaking for hazardous materials emergencies was identified and has been adopted as a tentative accident reporting standard by the Safety Board for accidents involving hazardous materials. Immediate and potential uses for the standardized hazardous materials behavior maps are identified and implementation problems are discussed.

Book Emergency Response Guidebook

Download or read book Emergency Response Guidebook written by U.S. Department of Transportation and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-06-03 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does the identification number 60 indicate a toxic substance or a flammable solid, in the molten state at an elevated temperature? Does the identification number 1035 indicate ethane or butane? What is the difference between natural gas transmission pipelines and natural gas distribution pipelines? If you came upon an overturned truck on the highway that was leaking, would you be able to identify if it was hazardous and know what steps to take? Questions like these and more are answered in the Emergency Response Guidebook. Learn how to identify symbols for and vehicles carrying toxic, flammable, explosive, radioactive, or otherwise harmful substances and how to respond once an incident involving those substances has been identified. Always be prepared in situations that are unfamiliar and dangerous and know how to rectify them. Keeping this guide around at all times will ensure that, if you were to come upon a transportation situation involving hazardous substances or dangerous goods, you will be able to help keep others and yourself out of danger. With color-coded pages for quick and easy reference, this is the official manual used by first responders in the United States and Canada for transportation incidents involving dangerous goods or hazardous materials.

Book Special Investigation Report

Download or read book Special Investigation Report written by United States. National Transportation Safety Board and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Observations of emergency response activities following a March 31, 1977, railroad accident near Rockingham, North Carolina, prompted the National Transportation Safety Board to initiate this special investigation of emergency response plans for handling railroad accidents in which hazardous materials, including those classified as radioactive, are involved. While the movement of hazardous materials through normal transportation channels is of concern to Federal, State, and local Government agencies and to the public, the transportation of radioactive materials is of special concern. For this reason, special plans designed to cope with emergencies involving radioactive materials have been developed at various levels of Government and by Private industry. These plans are the most comprehensive yet formulated for handling hazardous materials emergencies, and they have served as models for many nonradiological contingency plans. With the probable increase in the transportation of radioactive and other hazardous materials by rail, the Safety Board believes that all existing emergency response plans need to be critically reviewed to determine their adequacy.

Book Feasibility Study for Highway Hazardous Materials Bulk Package Accident Performance Data Collection

Download or read book Feasibility Study for Highway Hazardous Materials Bulk Package Accident Performance Data Collection written by Philip J. Daum and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2013 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "TRB's Hazardous Materials Cooperative Research Program (HMCRP) Report 10: Feasibility Study for Highway Hazardous Materials Bulk Package Accident Performance Data Collection explores methods to collect and analyze performance data for U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT)-specified hazardous materials bulk packages such as portable tanks and cargo tank motor vehicles. The report also identifies and evaluates institutional challenges to data collection, and makes suggestions for overcoming these challenges. In addition, the report offers a methodical approach for developing and implementing a reporting database system to collect and characterize information about damage to U.S. DOT-specified hazardous materials bulk packages involved in accidents, regardless of whether the damage resulted in a leak of contents. Appendices A through G have been published on a CD-ROM, which is bound into this report. Appendix titles are the following: Appendix A: Survey Development and Questions; Appendix B: Conditional Probability of Release as a Function of Data Refinement; Appendix C: Differences Between Highway and Rail Hazardous Material Transportation Affecting Development of a Bulk Package Accident Performance Database; Appendix D: Option Evaluation Tool; Appendix E: Pilot Study Data Collection Tool; Appendix F: Links to Newspaper Articles; Appendix G: An Example of Bulk Package Performance Analysis Using Multivariate Regression. The CD-ROM is also available for download from TRB's website as an ISO image. Links to the ISO image and instructions for burning a CD-ROM from an ISO image are provided below."--Pub. Info.
