Book Impact of Heavy Metals on the Environment

Download or read book Impact of Heavy Metals on the Environment written by Jean-Pierre Vernet and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 1992 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highlighted in this compilation of papers is the role and importance of heavy metals in the environment. It provides up-to-date information in a field of active research and progress, where the focus is on effects and interactions between the environment and organisms, as well as contaminant dynamics. Several papers address the impact of heavy metals on our health. The influence of metals on plants is described in an exhaustive study on lichens, which have been widely used as biomonitors for environmental contamination by heavy metals. Metals are also accumulated by animals, as seen in a chapter which focusses on sediment/benthic organism interactions and biomonitoring in fish. Soil interactions are discussed, as well as regional studies of freshwater sediments and the marine environment. The final part of the book addresses a crucial problem: the management of stabilized municipal waste sludges. As a result, the most important and significant recent trends are included, emphasizing interactions with and impacts of heavy metals on humans, animals, plants and soils.

Book Environmental Hazard Classification of Metals and Metal Compounds

Download or read book Environmental Hazard Classification of Metals and Metal Compounds written by Jonas Falck and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The objective of this project was to give guidance for understanding the performance and reliability of a classification rule, when applied to data generated by the transformation/dissolution (T/D) protocol. The classification of sparingly soluble metal compounds is based on ecotoxicity reference values and on the measured concentrations of metal ions of experiments performed according to the T/D protocol and the standard operating procedure. The assessment was conducted by Dr. Reinhard Meister, TFH Berlin - University of Applied Sciences. The Nordic project group on Classification and Labelling under the Nordic Chemicals Group has been responsible for the project and the report is written by Reinhard Meister and Jonas Falck. The project was financed by The Nordic Council of Ministers. The probabilistic assessment presented in this report, apart from being issued by the Nordic Council of Ministers, is also intended for publication by the OECD as part of an OECD Phase 2 report concerning the validation of the transformation/dissolution (T/D) protocol (Annex 10 of /1/)

Book Ecotoxicology Ecological Risk Assessment and Multiple Stressors

Download or read book Ecotoxicology Ecological Risk Assessment and Multiple Stressors written by Gerassimos Arapis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-02-09 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The science of ecotoxicology and the practice of ecological risk assessment are evolving rapidly. Ecotoxicology as a subject area came into prominence in the 1960s after the publication of Rachel Carson's book on the impact of pesticides on the environment. The rise of public and scientific concern for the effects of chemical pollutants on the environment in the 1960s and 1970s led to the development of the discipline of ecotoxicology, a science that takes into account the effects of chemicals in the context of ecology. Until the early 1980s, in spite of public concern and interest among scientists, the assessment of ecological risks associated with natural or synthetic pollutants was not considered a priority issue by most government. However, as the years passed, a better understanding of the importance of ecotoxicology emerged and with it, in some countries, the progressive formalization of an ecological risk assessment process. Ecological risk assessment is a conceptual tool for organizing and analyzing data and information to evaluate the likelihood that one or more stressors are causing or will cause adverse ecological effects. Ecological risk assessment allows risk managers to consider available scientific information when selecting a course of action, in addition to other factors that may affect their decision (e. g. , social, legal, political, or economic). Ecological risk assessment includes three phases (problem formulation, analysis, and risk characterization).

Book Eisler s Encyclopedia of Environmentally Hazardous Priority Chemicals

Download or read book Eisler s Encyclopedia of Environmentally Hazardous Priority Chemicals written by Ronald Eisler and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2007-08-08 with total page 987 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thousands of inorganic and organic chemicals and their metabolites enter the biosphere daily as a direct result of human activities. Many of these chemicals have serious consequences on sensitive species of natural resources, crops, livestock, and public health. The most hazardous of these were identified by a panel of environmental specialists from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; these chemicals are the focus of this encyclopedia. For each priority group of chemicals, information is presented on sources, uses, physical and chemical properties, tissue concentrations in field collections and their significance, lethal and sublethal effects under controlled conditions. This includes effects on survival, growth, reproduction, metabolism, carcinogenicity, teratogenicity, and mutagenicity - and proposed regulatory criteria for the protection of sensitive natural resources, crops, livestock, and human health. Taxonomic groups of natural resources covered include terrestrial and aquatic plants and invertebrates, fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. * The only product that centers on the most hazardous environmental chemicals to sensitive natural resources * The only single volume compendium on the subject, allowing ease in consulting * Written by a noted national and international authority on chemical risk assessment to living organisms

Book Hazardous and Trace Materials in Soil and Plants

Download or read book Hazardous and Trace Materials in Soil and Plants written by Muhammad Naeem and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2022-08-13 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hazardous and Trace Materials in Soil and Plants: Sources, Effects and Management explores the latest advancements in reducing, avoiding and eliminating soil contaminants that challenge the health and safety of agricultural plants. With a focus on minimizing the production of those hazardous substances, controlling their distribution and ensuring safe utilization, the book explores each contributing area and provides insights toward improved, sustainable and secure production. This is an excellent reference resource on both current research and future directions from laboratory research to field applications. The combined impacts of climate change and industrialization have led to increased and diversified threats to the health of the soil in which our food crops are grown, as well as in the plants themselves. This dual-hazard scenario is increasingly recognized as a threat to not just the environment, but to global food security as agricultural soils contaminated with pollutants alter plant metabolism, thus resulting in reduced crop quality and production quantity. Addresses the challenges of mitigating toxic substances in plants, including agricultural crops Presents current status and future prospects for managing biotic and abiotic environmental stress factors through plant stress tolerance mechanisms Includes chapters that address both biotic and abiotic stresses, agricultural and environmental science, toxicology, biotechnology, nanotechnology, and molecular studies Integrates insights and developments between environmental and plant science
