Book A Stephen Crane Encyclopedia

Download or read book A Stephen Crane Encyclopedia written by Stanley Wertheim and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1997-10-28 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication of The Red Badge of Courage in 1895 brought Stephen Crane instant fame at age 23. At 28, he was dead. In the brief span of his literary career, Crane enjoyed a significant measure of renown as well as notoriety, but his reputation rested almost entirely upon his war novel, and he felt that his talent had ultimately been misjudged. From his adolescence until his death, Crane was a professional journalist. To this day, most educated American readers know him only as the author of the most realistic Civil War novel ever written, three or four action-packed short stories, and a handful of iconoclastic free-verse poems. Crane was befriended and admired by some of the most important literary figures of his time, such as William Dean Howells, Willa Cather, Joseph Conrad, Henry James, and H. G. Wells. He has also been called a realist, a naturalist, an impressionist, a symbolist, and an existentialist. This reference book provides a more complete picture of Crane's short but furiously creative life and encourages a more extensive appreciation of his works. The volume includes hundreds of entries for members of Crane's immediate and extended family; close friends and associates; educational institutions that he attended; places where he resided; publishers and syndicates by whom he was employed; literary movements with which he is usually associated; and the works of fiction, poetry, and journalism that he wrote. Thus the book shows that he was a pioneer in the development of a number of genres in modern American fiction and poetry; that he was the first literary chronicler of the burgeoning slums of urban America who refused to sentimentalize his materials; that his Western stories reveal the steady retreat of the American frontier before the encroachments of a modern Europeanized civilization; and that his short stories and poems engage a number of enduring themes. Many of the entries cite works for further reading, and the volume includes a chronology and a bibliography of the most important studies of his life and writing.

Book The Hawthorne and Melville Friendship

Download or read book The Hawthorne and Melville Friendship written by Nathaniel Hawthorne and published by McFarland. This book was released on 1991 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nathaniel Hawthorne and Herman Melville--so different in temperament and background--were intellectual equals who formed a singular and intense friendship beginning in 1850. This volume, divided into three parts, examines the relationship. The bibliographic part addresses biographical accounts of the friendship, assessments of mutual influences, literary reflections of their relationship, parallel readings of their works, and generic and theoretical approaches to the two. The second part includes seven of the most important biographical and critical essays written on the Hawthorne-Melville relationship. The third appends the surviving primary sources: Melville's Hawthorne and His Mosses essay, Melville's 12 surviving letters to the Hawthornes, man and wife, and the Hawthornes' one surviving letter to Melville.

Book The Half vanished Structure

Download or read book The Half vanished Structure written by Magnus Ullén and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2004 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes issue with the tendency in twentieth-century Hawthorne-criticism to blur the distinction between symbolism and allegory. Rejecting the long-standing notion that Hawthorne is a symbolist in allegorical disguise, Ullén argues that allegory is the key to understanding how religion, sexuality, aesthetics and politics are interwoven in Hawthorne's writings. The study presents a model for allegorical interpretation of general applicability, which is brought to bear on each of Hawthorne's mature romances, and on the oft-neglected Wonder Books written for children. An unparalleled analysis of the formal intricacies of Hawthorne's writings, this book is an eloquent plea for the necessity of grounding ideological analysis in aesthetical considerations.

Book Gothic to Multicultural

Download or read book Gothic to Multicultural written by A. Robert Lee and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2009 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Gothic to Multicultural: Idioms of Imagining in American Literary Fiction," twenty-three essays each carefully revised from the past four decades, explores both range and individual register. The collection opens with considerations of gothic as light and dark in Charles Brockden Brown, war and peace in Cooper s "The Spy," Antarctica as world-genesis in Poe s "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym," the link of The Custom House and main text in Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter, reflexive codings in Melville s "Moby-Dick" and "The Confidence-Man," Henry James "Hawthorne" as self-mirroring biography, and Stephen Crane s working of his Civil War episode in "The Red Badge of Courage." Two composite lineages address apocalypse in African American fiction and landscape in women s authorship from Sarah Orne Jewett to Leslie Marmon Silko. There follow culture and anarchy in Henry James "The Princess Casamassima," text-into-film in Edith Wharton s "The Age of Innocence," modernist stylings in Fitzgerald, Faulkner and Hemingway, and roman noir in Cornell Woolrich. The collection then turns to the limitations of protest categorization for Richard Wright and Chester Himes, autofiction in J.D. Salinger s "The Catcher in the Rye," and the novel of ideas in Robert Penn Warren s late fiction. Three closing essays take up multicultural genealogy, Harlem, then the Black South, in African American fiction, and the reclamation of voice in Native American fiction. A. Robert Lee is Professor of American Literature at Nihon University, Tokyo, having previously taught at the University of Kent, UK. His publications include "Designs of Blackness: Mappings in the Literature and Culture of Afro-America" (1998), "Multicultural American Fiction: Comparative Black, Native, Latino/a and Asian American Fictions" (2003), which won the American Book Award for 2004, "Japan Textures: Sight and Word," with Mark Gresham (2007), and "United States: Re-viewing Multicultural American Literature" (2008).
