Book Hawks Dynasty

Download or read book Hawks Dynasty written by Chicago Tribune and published by Triumph Books. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chicago Blackhawks' 2015 postseason run culminated in the team's third Stanley Cup since 2010, the sixth championship in the Original Six franchise's history. The road to hoisting the Cup was the bumpiest of Chicago's three titles under head coach Joel Quenneville. The Blackhawks finished third in the NHL's Central Division following a season in which key players, including Patrick Kane and Corey Crawford, missed time due to injury. But the Hawks stormed past Nashville, Minnesota and Anaheim to set up a Stanley Cup Final matchup against a young, fast Tampa Bay Lightning team. With new heroes emerging throughout the postseason, the Blackhawks battled through a tough, six-game first round series against Nashville before sweeping the Minnesota Wild to reach the Western Conference Final. In an epic series that featured three overtime contests, the Blackhawks overcame a 3-2 deficit to defeat the Ducks in seven games to advance to the Stanley Cup Final. Packed with one of a kind analysis and stunning photography from the Chicago Tribune, Hawks Dynasty takes fans through the Blackhawks' journey, from the crushing loss to the Los Angeles Kings in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals in 2014 through the final seconds against Tampa Bay. This commemorative edition also includes profiles of Kane, Crawford, Jonathan Toews, Duncan Keith, Brandon Saad and Scott Darling.

Download or read book Neighborhood Hawks written by John Lane and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After reading J. A. Baker’s fifty-year-old British nature classic The Peregrine, John Lane found himself an ocean away, stalking resident red-shouldered hawks in his neighborhood in Spartanburg, South Carolina. What he observed was very different from what Baker deduced from a decade of chronicling the lives of those brooding migratory raptors. Baker imagined a species on the brink of extinction because of the use of agricultural chemicals on European farms. A half century later in America, Lane found the red-shouldered hawks to be a stable Anthropocene species adapted to life along the waterways of a suburban nation. Lane watched the hawks for a full year and along the way made a pledge to himself: Anytime he heard or saw the noisy, nonmigratory hawks in his neighborhood, he would drop whatever he was doing and follow them on foot, on bike, or in his truck. The almanac that results from this discipline considers many questions any practiced amateur naturalist would ask, such as where and when will the hawks nest, what do they eat, what are their greatest threats, and what exactly are they communicating through those constant multinoted cries? Lane’s year following the hawks also led him to try to answer what would become the most complex question of all: why his heart, like Baker’s, goes out so fully to wild things.

Book The NHL

  • Author : D'Arcy Jenish
  • Publisher : Anchor Canada
  • Release : 2016-10-25
  • ISBN : 0385671482
  • Pages : 434 pages

Download or read book The NHL written by D'Arcy Jenish and published by Anchor Canada. This book was released on 2016-10-25 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In-depth research meets great storytelling in the history of an organization that has been a talking point and newsmaker for 100 years. The National Hockey League--born in a Montreal hotel room on November 26, 1917--has much to celebrate as it approaches its centenary. Millions of fans from Montreal to Miami and Edmonton to Anaheim attend NHL games each year, millions more watch on TV and the league pays its best players multi-million annual salaries. Over the course of its first century, the NHL's fortunes have ebbed and flowed. It has experienced setbacks and triumphs and innumerable crises. The league has awarded many franchises only to see some of them falter, fail and fold. The board of governors--which has included rich eccentrics and at least one future convict--has sometimes been fractured by men who loathed each other. How on earth has the NHL survived? The answer lies in the remarkable fact that it has had only five presidents and one commissioner. Two of these chiefs were stop-gaps. For the balance of league's ninety-plus years, four men have shaped and guided its fortunes and controlled the tough, hard-nosed, sometimes unruly owners who constituted the board of governors. This is the story of two perpetual struggles--the one on the ice and the one going on behind the scenes to keep the whole enterprise afloat. D'Arcy Jenish was granted unprecedented access to previously unpublished league files, including revelatory minutes of board meetings, and conducted dozens of hours of interviews with league executives, including commissioner Gary Bettman and former president John Ziegler, as well as well as owners, coaches, general managers and player representatives. He now reveals for the first time the true story behind some of the most significant events of the contemporary era. This is a definitive, revelatory chonicle that no serious hockey fan will want to be without.
