Book The Irish in Haverhill Massachusetts

Download or read book The Irish in Haverhill Massachusetts written by Patricia Trainor O'Malley and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1998-02-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Maroney from Clare. "Capt." Nicholas Costello from Kilkenny. The Lucey and Hodnett sisters from Cork. The many Linnehans from Limerick. Bridget McGovern from Cavan. These were some of Haverhill's Irish. Some came by sailing ship during the years of the Great Famine. Others came by steamship at the end of the century. The immigrants hailed from every part of Ireland, but especially from the province of Munster. They were drawn to Haverhill, Massachusetts, to work in its shoe shops, to cook and clean in its "big houses," and to be laborers for the city. The Irish immigrants settled in every part of Haverhill and put their imprint on the old Yankee town. They built their own churches and schools, joined together in fraternal and religious organizations, elected their fellow Irish to the city government, opened stores, and saw their children become lawyers, doctors, priests, and nuns, as well as professional baseball players. They were a visible presence, and we can view them through this wonderful collection of photographs lovingly preserved by their descendants.

Book Love in the Library

Download or read book Love in the Library written by Maggie Tokuda-Hall and published by Candlewick Press. This book was released on 2022-01-11 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in an incarceration camp where the United States cruelly detained Japanese Americans during WWII and based on true events, this moving love story finds hope in heartbreak. To fall in love is already a gift. But to fall in love in a place like Minidoka, a place built to make people feel like they weren’t human—that was miraculous. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Tama is sent to live in a War Relocation Center in the desert. All Japanese Americans from the West Coast—elderly people, children, babies—now live in prison camps like Minodoka. To be who she is has become a crime, it seems, and Tama doesn’t know when or if she will ever leave. Trying not to think of the life she once had, she works in the camp’s tiny library, taking solace in pages bursting with color and light, love and fairness. And she isn’t the only one. George waits each morning by the door, his arms piled with books checked out the day before. As their friendship grows, Tama wonders: Can anyone possibly read so much? Is she the reason George comes to the library every day? Maggie Tokuda-Hall’s beautifully illustrated, elegant love story features a photo of the real Tama and George—the author’s grandparents—along with an afterword and other back matter for readers to learn more about a time in our history that continues to resonate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early on March 15, 1697, a band of Abenaki warriors in service to the French raided the English frontier village of Haverhill, Massachusetts. Striking swiftly, the Abenaki killed twenty-seven men, women, and children, and took thirteen captives, including thirty-nine-year-old Hannah Duston and her week-old daughter, Martha. A short distance from the village, one of the warriors murdered the squalling infant by dashing her head against a tree. After a forced march of nearly one hundred miles, Duston and two companions were transferred to a smaller band of Abenaki, who camped on a tiny island located at the junction of the Merrimack and Contoocook Rivers, several miles north of present day Concord, New Hampshire. This was the height of King William’s War, both a war of terror and a religious contest, with English Protestantism vying for control of the New World with French Catholicism. After witnessing her infant’s murder, Duston resolved to get even. Two weeks into their captivity, Duston and her companions, a fifty-one-year-old woman and a twelve-year-old boy, moved among the sleeping Abenaki with tomahawks and knives, killing two men, two women, and six children. After returning to the bloody scene alone to scalp their victims, Duston and the others escaped down the Merrimack River in a stolen canoe. They braved treacherous waters and the constant threat of attack and recapture, returning to tell their story and collect a bounty for the scalps. Was Hannah Duston the prototypical feminist avenger, or the harbinger of the Native American genocide? In this meticulously researched and riveting narrative, bestselling author Jay Atkinson sheds new light on the early struggle for North America.
