Download or read book Unruly Visions written by Gayatri Gopinath and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-25 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Unruly Visions Gayatri Gopinath brings queer studies to bear on investigations of diaspora and visuality, tracing the interrelation of affect, archive, region, and aesthetics through an examination of a wide range of contemporary queer visual culture. Spanning film, fine art, poetry, and photography, these cultural forms—which Gopinath conceptualizes as aesthetic practices of queer diaspora—reveal the intimacies of seemingly disparate histories of (post)colonial dwelling and displacement and are a product of diasporic trajectories. Countering standard formulations of diaspora that inevitably foreground the nation-state, as well as familiar formulations of queerness that ignore regional gender and sexual formations, she stages unexpected encounters between works by South Asian, Middle Eastern, African, Australian, and Latinx artists such as Tracey Moffatt, Akram Zaatari, and Allan deSouza. Gopinath shows how their art functions as regional queer archives that express alternative understandings of time, space, and relationality. The queer optics produced by these visual practices creates South-to-South, region-to-region, and diaspora-to-region cartographies that profoundly challenge disciplinary and area studies rubrics. Gopinath thereby provides new critical perspectives on settler colonialism, empire, military occupation, racialization, and diasporic dislocation as they indelibly mark both bodies and landscapes.
Download or read book Mapping Sitting written by Karl Bassil and published by Mind the Gap/Arab Image Foundation. This book was released on 2005 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Setting up on a sunny day at the beach or snapping a passport photo, the studio photographer measures out his working day in repeated frames, fixing the ordinary customer on film. Addressing the enduring value of these portraits and the viewer's common humanity with the subjects is the aim of Mapping Sitting, a collection of studio photographs, primarily from the 1950s and 1960s, that shows an Arab world that defies stereotypes. Drawn from the archives of the Arab Image Foundation, whose mission is to rescue and preserve indigenous Arab photography, and curated by two Lebanese-born artists, Walid Raad and Akram Zaatari, these photographs provide a moving mosaic of Middle Eastern men and women posing in the studio, lounging on the sand, or goofing around on bikes. There are also pages of carefully indexed passport photos, which become charged with meaning in a post-9/11 world. The exhibition from which Mapping Sitting was drawn, mounted at the Grey Art Gallery in New York, was widely reviewed in publications such as The New York Times and New York Magazine.
Download or read book Contemporary Art Photography and the Politics of Citizenship written by Vered Maimon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-26 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes recent artistic and activist projects in order to conceptualize the new roles and goals of a critical theory and practice of art and photography. Vered Maimon argues that current artistic and activist practices are no longer concerned with the “politics of representation” and the critique of the spectacle, but with a “politics of rights” and the performative formation of shared yet highly contested public domains. The book thus offers a critical framework in which to rethink the artistic, the activist, and the political under globalization. The primary focus is on the ways contemporary artists and activists examine political citizenship as a paradox where subjects are struggling to acquire rights whose formulation rests on attributes they allegedly don't have; while the universal political validity of these rights presupposes precisely the abstraction of every form of difference, rights for all. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, contemporary art, photography theory, visual culture, cultural studies, critical theory, political theory, human rights, and activism.
Download or read book Making the Modern Turkish Citizen written by Özge Baykan Calafato and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-01-27 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring over 100 colour images, this book explores the photographic self-representations of the urban middle classes in Turkey in the 1920s and the 1930s. Examining the relationship between photography and gender, body, space as well as materiality and language, its six chapters explore how the production and circulation of vernacular photographs contributed to the making of the modern Turkish citizen in the formative years of the Turkish Republic, when nation-building, secularization and modernization reforms took centre stage. Based on an extensive photographic archive, the book shows that individuals actively reproduced, circulated and negotiated the ideal citizen-image imposed by the Kemalist regime, reflecting not only state-imposed directives but also their class aspirations and other, wider social and cultural developments of the period, from Western fashion trends and movies to the increasing availability of modern consumer items. Calafato also reveals that the freedom from state control afforded by personal cameras allowed the desired image to be sometimes tweaked by incorporating elements from Ottoman and Turkic traditions, by pushing the boundaries of gender norms or by introducing playfulness. Making the Modern Turkish Citizen offers a valuable portrait of the ongoing political and social changes on the lives of the Turkish middle class, and of how they saw and wanted to present themselves, privately and publicly.
Download or read book The Cinema of Me written by Alisa Lebow and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a filmmaker makes a film with herself as a subject, she is already divided as both the subject matter of the film and the subject making the film. The two senses of the word are immediately in play - the matter and the maker--thus the two ways of being subjectified as both subject and object. Subjectivity finds its filmic expression, not surprisingly, in very personal ways, yet it is nonetheless shaped by and in relation to collective expressions of identity that can transform the cinema of 'me' into the cinema of 'we'. Leading scholars and practitioners of first-person film are brought together in this groundbreaking collection to consider the theoretical, ideological, and aesthetic challenges wrought by this form of filmmaking in its diverse cultural, geographical, and political contexts.

Download or read book Disordered Attention written by Claire Bishop and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2024-06-11 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ways we encounter contemporary art and performance is changing. Installations brim with archival documents. Dances stretch for weeks. Performances last a minute. Exhibitions are spread out over thirty venues. There are endless artworks about mid-century architecture and design. How are we expected to engage with today's diverse practise? Is the old model of close-looking still the ideal, or has it given way to browsing, skimming, and sampling? Across four essays, art historian and critic Claire Bishop identifies trends in contemporary practice- research-based installations, performance exhibitions, interventions, and invocations of modernist architecture-and their challenges to traditional modes of attention. Charting a critical path through the last three decades, Bishop pinpoints how spectatorship and visual literacy are evolving under the pressures of digital technology.

Download or read book Here and Elsewhere written by Massimiliano Gioni and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This catalogue, accompanying the New Museum exhibition Here and Elsewhere, presents the work of over 45 artists who share roots in the Arab world and a critical sensibility with regard to images and image-making. The title of the exhibition is borrowed from a 1976 film-essay by Jean-Luc Godard, Jean-Pierre Gorin and Anne-Marie Miéville. Their film, Ici et ailleurs, was conceived as a pro-Palestinian documentary, but evolved into a complex reflection on the ethics of representation. Taking inspiration from this film--which has had a strong impact on Arab artists--Here and Elsewhere examines the role of the artist in the face of historical events. An anthology of critical texts edited by Bidoun magazine highlights the critical discussions that have animated contemporary art in the Arab world. Among the artists included are Fouad Elkoury, Hrair Sarkissian, Hassan Sharif, Anna Boghiguian, Simone Fattal, Ziad Antar and Etel Adnan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Having undergone profound material, aesthetic, and institutional transformations since the arrival of digital technologies, photography and film frequently intersect in the processes of convergence (the shared technological basis of diverse media in digital code) and remediation (the mutual reshaping of old and new media). However, the foundational relations between film and photography have a long history extending well back into the nineteenth century. This history includes many acclaimed practitioners who have worked in both media, such as Albert Kahn, Helen Levitt, Agnès Varda, Chris Marker, Robert Frank, Wim Wenders, Abbas Kiarostami, and Fiona Tan, but it also involves a range of intermedial forms that combine elements of both media, such as the film still, the film photonovel, and the photofilm. These hybrid forms were long neglected critically because they were considered marginal forms of paratextuality or deviations from medium specificity-the idea that a medium must be deployed according to its own specific capacities compared to other media"--
