Download or read book Spirals of Contention written by Satish Saberwal and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-04-27 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the social and psychological processes that led to the Partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947. It recognizes the long-term continuities in the idiom of conflict (as well as cooperation), and shows that, by 1900, the conflicts and animosities were gathering a self-aggravating momentum. The book moves back and forth between evidence and general, or theoretical, understanding. Separateness between Hindus and Muslims grew reciprocally, with hardening religious identities and the growing frequency of incidents of conflict. These skirmishes had several dimensions: symbolic (desecrating places of worship), societal (conversions), and physical (violence against women). As mutual trust declined, a quarter century of negotiations under diverse auspices failed to yield an agreement, and even the framework of the Partition in 1947 was imposed by the colonial rulers. A theoretically informed study, this book takes a comparative stance along several axes. Recognizing long-term continuities in the idiom of conflict (as well as of cooperation), it will be of interest to students of conflicts, Partitions, history, sociology, and South Asian studies.

  • Author : G S Bajpai
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2019-10-18

  • Pages : 279 pages

Download or read book Juvenile Justice written by G S Bajpai and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-10-18 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an existing gap currently in the academic discourse pertaining to the treatment of juveniles before, during and after their conflict with the law. This book attempts to identify this lacuna in the Indian juvenile justice system and study its impact on our children. It remedies this crucial gap by juxtaposing 'what is' with 'what ought to be' by analysing the results of a study conducted in observation homes and special homes in the National Capital Territory of Delhi, Haryana and Punjab. The data was studied on parameters which reflect upon all aspects of the life and experiences of juveniles before their conflict with the law, inside the homes as well as their post-release prospects. This data was then tested vis-à-vis the requirements of the standard of living, reformation, rehabilitation and reintegration mandated under the Juvenile Justice Act, 2000, as well as the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015. Presenting a comprehensive account, the book further details the amendments in the juvenile justice laws after the Nirbhaya case and offers a critique to it on the grounds of both descriptive realities as well as the current normative understanding of juvenile justice.

Book Agroforestry Systems in India Livelihood Security Ecosystem Services

Download or read book Agroforestry Systems in India Livelihood Security Ecosystem Services written by Jagdish Chander Dagar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agroforestry, the word coined in early seventies, has made its place in all the developed and the developing countries of the world and is now recognized as an important approach to ensuring food security and rebuilding resilient rural environments. India has been an all-time leader in agroforestry. The South and Southeast Asia region comprising India is often described as the cradle of agroforestry. Almost all forms of agroforestry systems exist across India in ecozones ranging from humid tropical lowlands to high-altitude and temperate biomes, and perhumid rainforest zones to parched drylands. The country ranks foremost among the community of nations not only in terms of this enormous diversity and long tradition of the practice of agroforestry, but also in fostering scientific developments in the subject. Agroforestry applies to private agricultural and forest lands and communities that also include highly erodible, flood-prone, economically marginal and environmentally sensitive lands. The typical situation is agricultural, where trees are added to create desired benefits. Agroforestry allows for the diversification of farm activities and makes better use of environmental resources. Owing to an increase in the population of human and cattle, there is increasing demand of food as well as fodder, particularly in developing countries like India. So far, there is no policy that deals with specifics in agroforestry in India. But, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research has been discussing on the scope of having a National Agroforestry Policy in appropriate platforms. However, evolving a policy requires good and reliable datasets from different corners of the country on the subject matter. This synthesis volume containing 13 chapters is an attempt to collate available information in a classified manner into different system ecologies, problems and solutions, and converging them into a policy support.
