Book Utilization of Residual Forest Biomass

Download or read book Utilization of Residual Forest Biomass written by Pentti Hakkila and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An increase in the demand for wood results in improved recovery and less residual biomass in the forests. Paradoxically, interest in forest residue as a renewable source of raw material seems to be in a reverse ratio to its availability in a certain area. Finland and Sweden are probably more dependent on forestry and forest in dustries than any other developed countries in the world. A sufficiency of raw ma terial for integrated forest industries is vital for the national economy of both countries, and a great deal of attention is being paid to the long-term potential of unutilized biomass left behind in logging operations. Furthermore, since these countries possess no reserves of fossil fuels, and since their per-capita consump tion of primary energy is exceptionally high, they also consider unmerchantable forest biomass a realistic source of indigenous energy. A joint Nordic research project on harvesting and utilization of logging residue was carried out in 1969-1976 under the auspices of the Nordic Research Council on Forest Operations. This fruitful cooperation soon gave rise to related national projects in Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Denmark, stimulating further research and producing practical applications. Concurrently, particularly after the worldwide energy crisis in 1973, research on all aspects of utilization of forest bio mass mushroomed in the United States, Canada, and the Soviet Union. An ex plosive increase occurred in both the number and diversity of biomass studies.

Book Estimates of Biomass in Logging Residue and Standing Residual Inventory Following Tree harvest Activity on Timberland Acres in the Southern Region

Download or read book Estimates of Biomass in Logging Residue and Standing Residual Inventory Following Tree harvest Activity on Timberland Acres in the Southern Region written by Roger C. Conner and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides estimates of biomass (green tons) in logging residue and standing residual inventory on timberland acres with evidence of tree cutting. Biomass as defined by Forest Inventory and Analysis is the aboveground dry weight of wood in the bole and limbs of live trees 1-inch diameter at breast height (d.b.h.), and excludes tree foliage, seedlings, and understory vegetation. Total timberland area with evidence of tree cutting averaged just over 6.0 million acres per year for all 13 Southern States over a 14-year period from 1994 to 2008. Final harvest was the primary type of cutting and averaged almost 2.3 million acres. Partial harvest and commercial thinning accounted for 1.8 million acres, and 1.7 million acres, respectively. As a result of annual tree cutting of all types in all 13 Southern States, a total of > 737 million green tons of residual biomass in standing live trees remained after harvesting. Of that volume, biomass in all-live residual inventory trees ( 1.0-inch d.b.h.) on final harvest acres amounted to nearly 457 million green tons. Biomass in rough and rotten trees from all other cutting combined totaled just over 280 million green tons. If recovered, this material could be used to help supply a biofuels industry in the South.

Book Logging Residues on Harvesting Operations Western South Dakota Wyoming Utah and Colorado Classic Reprint

Download or read book Logging Residues on Harvesting Operations Western South Dakota Wyoming Utah and Colorado Classic Reprint written by Theodore S. Setzer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-12 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Logging Residues on Harvesting Operations, Western South Dakota, Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado Logging residues studies are conducted by the Forest Survey research work unit of the Intermountain Forest and Range Experiment Station for the purpose of estimating net inventory loss from timber harvesting operations. Since 1965, logging residues studies have been conducted in seven Rocky Mountain States and in South Dakota west of the 103d meridian. (the 103d meridian is used in South Dakota as a demarcation line between the western forests and the relatively insignificant eastern forests.) Book Logging Residues Under Different Stand and Harvesting Conditions Rocky Mountains

Download or read book Logging Residues Under Different Stand and Harvesting Conditions Rocky Mountains written by Robert Earl Benson and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume and characteristics of logging residues from 34 harvest areas are presented. Clearcuts and partial cuts logged to conventional utilization levels and to close utilization levels are included. Residue volumes ranged from almost 3,600 ft3 /acre of wood 3-inches-plus down to about 550 ft3 /acre, depending on treatment. More than 60 percent of the residues were sound. A high proportion of residues were in pieces under 9 feet in length.

Book Research in Thermochemical Biomass Conversion

Download or read book Research in Thermochemical Biomass Conversion written by A.V. Bridgwater and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This conference is the second such meeting under the auspices of the International Energy Agency's Bioenergy Agreement. The first lEA sponsored Fundamentals of Thermochemical Biomass Conversion Conference was held in Estes Park in 1982 and attracted 153 delegates from 13 countries around the world at a time when interest in biomass derived energy was at a peak. Since then oil prices have fallen considerably and with most prognoses for level prices until the end of the century, there has been a significant downturn in support for biomass conversion technologies. It has been particularly encouraging, therefore, to have received such an excellent response to this meeting. A total of 122 papers were offered, and 135 delegates registered for the conference from 19 countries. The theme of this meeting was Research in Thermochemical Biomass Conversion to reflect the advances made in research, development, demonstration and com mercialisation since the Fundamentals meeting in 1982. The programme was divided into sections on fundamental research, applied research, and demonstration and commercial activities to emphasise the interaction and roles of all levels of research in supporting the eventual commercial implementation. The layout of the pro ceedings reflects this same pattern, with an introductory section on status and technoeconomics to identify opportunities and constraints in different parts of the world. All the papers included in these proceedings have been subjected to the usual peer review process to ensure the highest standards.

Book Logging Residues in Principal Forest Types of the Northern Rocky Mountains

Download or read book Logging Residues in Principal Forest Types of the Northern Rocky Mountains written by Robert Earl Benson and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An estimated 466 million ft 3 of forest residue material (nonmerchantable, 3 inches diameter and larger) is generated annually in the Northern Rocky Mountains (Montana, Idaho, Wyoming). Extensive studies of residues in the major forest types show a considerable portion is suited for various products. The lodgepole pine type has the greatest potential for increased residue utilization. In most other forest types, form and condition of residues limit potential use to fiber or fuel. In all forest types, volume, condition, and product potential vary widely from stand to stand.
