Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard College Class of 1865: Secretary's Report No; 11, 1907 to 1921 Classmates: Our devoted Secretary, George A. Goddard, intended to issue a Class Report in 1915, on our fiftieth anniversary, in accordance with the time-honored custom, but his failing health prevented him from completing the task. As our last Report was issued in 1907, many members of the Class have been very anxious that the new Secretary should issue one more Report. Since 1907 more than fifty of our classmates have died, and as it would be necessary to prepare memorials of each of these, the magnitude of the task can be appreciated. With the help of the Class Committee and others this has at last been accomplished, although some of the memorials are not as complete as we should like to have had them, and your indulgence is asked for any shortcomings or errors. During the past year much time has been devoted to the Harvard Endowment Fund, and it is gratifying to be able to state that our class is one of the eight classes that have obtained one hundred percent, in enrolment, and that there are only four classes older than ours that have contributed a larger amount than we have. To recall the memories of the past, we have reprinted the Class Ode and Class Song, and extracts from the Oration and Poem. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Second Report of the Secretary of the Class of 1865, in Harvard College: July, 1865, to July, 1868 At the end of the Report there have been placed a summary of it, and statistics of such facts as it has. Been deemed desirable to record. Those who are given as taking the degrees of A. M. And M.D. In 1868 are such as have expressed an intention to take them then. The Secretary of the Class of 1855, in his last Report, gave some amusing statistics with reference to the average number of children born to the Class each year, and to each member. I must confess that I hesitate to follow in his footsteps, and to divide one baby into such small fractions as an honest calculation would compel me to do. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eighth Report of the Secretary of the Class of 1865, of Harvard College: June, 1890, to July, 1895 I have attempted to bring down to date the summary of degrees and other honors received by the members of the Class, which is given in the list printed at the beginning of the Report. Two new names will be found in the list of graduated mem bers - that of George B. Russell, who received his degree in 1891, as of our Class, and that of John W. Carter, who received his degree in 1892 as of our Class. The recent sad death of the latter, following so closely upon our Class dinner, at which he was present, was a shock to us all. The account of his life must be delayed till the next Report. Two others of our number have died during the past five years, Howard and Doe. A notice of the life of the latter, prepared by a classmate, will be found in this Report. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard University in the War of 1861-1865: A Record of Services Rendered in the Army and Navy of the United States by the Graduates and Students of Harvard College and the Professional Schools The collection of facts to illustrate the part taken in the war of 1861 - 1865 by Students of Harvard College or of other departments of the University, was begun as early as 1862. The first roll of honor, as it was the custom of that day to call such lists, was printed in the Boston Courier in March of the last-named year, and more extended lists were published in the triennial catalogues of 1866 and 1869. The Corporation and the Committee of Fifty appointed to build Memorial Hall have constantly had in mind, however, a fuller and more satisfactory record, which should include not only those who died in the ser vice, but also those who offered themselves to the country, yet whose lives were spared. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ninth Report of the Secretary of the Class of 1865, of Harvard College: July, 1895, to July, 1900 As in case of the last Report, you no doubt will notice that I have less of incident to narrate than in the earlier Reports. It is but fair to remind you that I do not claim to be writing a his tory of new brooms. I have narrated all that you have reported to me; but you have less to report. Even your activity in writing poetry seems to have subsided. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
