Book excerpt: Harry grows up a happy rabbit with lots of friends to play with. As he gets older, a funny thing happens. Harry gets hairier and hairier until his friends start making fun of him. They taunt Harry for being different, and he soon feels like he has no friends at all. Then, something terrible happens to Henry the hare, and "hairy" Harry comes to his rescue. Despite his friends being mean, Harry chooses to be kind and helpful. His actions make the other rabbits realize it doesn't matter what they look like, but it does matter how they treat each other. Sadly, many children today experience bullying in a variety of forms. Harry: The Very Hairy Hare is about overcoming bullying through kindness and acts of love. We're all responsible for our words and actions, so instead of being cruel, smile, share a kind word, and do a good deed.

Book American Accent Drills for British and Australian Speakers

Download or read book American Accent Drills for British and Australian Speakers written by Amanda Quaid and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-24 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Accent Drills for British and Australian Speakers provides a comprehensive guide to learning a "General American" accent, made specifically for native English speakers. Unlike most American accent guides, which are geared toward ESL learners, this handbook covers only the shifts that English speakers need to make – nothing more, nothing less. In addition to vowel and consonant drills, it covers the finer points of American intonation and elision, features that often elude English speakers of other dialects. Finally, it provides exercises for "owning" the dialect, finding authenticity and making it work for each individual actor in their own way. This is an excellent resource for students of speech and dialects, actors from the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, and advanced ESL learners who need to use an American accent on screen or on stage. American Accent Drills for British and Australian Speakers also includes access to downloadable audio files of the practice drills featured in the book, to help students practice and perfect their American accent.

This text requires no prior programming experience and only a modest amount of high school algebra. It provides an approachable introduction to fundamental programming techniques and design skills, helping students master basic concepts and become competent coders. The second half covers algorithms and data structures at a level suitable for beginning students. Horstmann and Budd combine their professional and academic experience to guide the student from the basics to more advanced topics and contemporary applications such as GUIs and XML programming. All sections include built-in activities, open-ended review exercises, programming exercises, and projects to help students practice programming and build confidence. These activities go far beyond simplistic multiple-choice questions and animations. They have been designed to guide students along a learning path for mastering the complexities of programming. Book Computational Models of American Speech

Download or read book Computational Models of American Speech written by M. Margaret Withgott and published by Center for the Study of Language (CSLI). This book was released on 1993 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new perspective on phonetic variation is achieved in this volume through the construction of a series of models of spoken American English. In the past, computer theorists and programmers investigating pronunciation have often relied on their own knowledge of the language or on limited transcription data. Speech recognition researchers, on the other hand, have drawn on a great deal of data but without examining in detail the information about pronunciation the data contains. The authors combine the best of each approach to develop probabilistic and rule-based computational models of transcription data. An ongoing controversy in studies of phonetic variation is the existence and proper definition of a phonetic unit. The authors argue that assumptions about the units of spoken language are critical to a computational model. Their computational models employ suprasegmental elements such as syllable boundaries, stress, and position in a unit called a metrical foot. The use of such elements in modeling data enables the creation of better computational models for both recognition and synthesis technology. This book should be of interest to speech engineers, linguists, and anyone who wishes to understand symbolic systems of communication.
