Book Harry S Truman The Economics Of A Populist President

Download or read book Harry S Truman The Economics Of A Populist President written by E Ray Canterbery and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2014-03-19 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harry S Truman is best remembered as the President who witnessed the swift arrival of the Cold War in the tumultuous years after World War Two. Little however has been written to show that he was also the populist President who set the political economic course for the United States to win it merely 40 years later. In this timely biography, E Ray Canterbery captures the spirit of the man, who first and foremost, was a politician who crafted political progams such as the Fair Deal program, full-employment program, New Deal program, reconversion, stabilization, and agriculture progams through the lens of progressiveness. He focuses on Truman's populist economics by charting Truman's early years, the makings of his populist character, his beginnings in Washington, Communism and the Truman Doctrine, the campaign of 1948, the Marshall Plan, the firing of General MacArthur, and the Korean War. While the economic aspects of his term were fundamentally that of war and peace, Canterbery analyses in great depth Truman's economic policies and instruments, such as the Employment Act of 1946 and the President's Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) — results of Truman's presidency that other authors of books on Truman have largely ignored.Harry S Truman: The Economics of a Populist President shows how Truman should be remembered: As a progressive politician whose populist policies rank him among the “near great” Presidents in the tradition of William Jennings Bryan, Theodore Roosevelt, and Woodrow Wilson.

Download or read book The Wild Horse Dilemma written by Bonnie U. Gruenberg and published by Synclitic Media LLC. This book was released on 2016-04-16 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tirades and threats. Hyperbole and deception. Changing landscapes and immutable opinions. Living traditions and dead animals. The conflicts that rage around the wild horses of the Atlantic coast can be loud, confusing, and downright vicious. Wild horses have lived on these barrier islands for hundreds of years, and many people would like to see them remain. Horse advocates and horse detractors alike turn to research to support their claims, but often reach different conclusions from the same information. Engaging the reader at every turn of the page, Bonnie Gruenberg frequently breaks new ground as she separates fact from myth and exposes the roots of issues for the reader to consider. She does not flinch from probing questions: Are these horses wild or feral? Native or exotic? Were Chincoteague Ponies used in bioweapons research? Did the U.S. Coast Guard patrol East Coast beaches with Western mustangs in WWII? How does the condition of lactating mares predict environmental health? She weaves a story of ancient origins and current events, hard science and fiery passion. The result is the most comprehensive and factual reference on the wild horses of the Atlantic coast.

Book The Extraordinary Journey of Harry Forth

Download or read book The Extraordinary Journey of Harry Forth written by Bruce K. Byers and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-11-26 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: January 1950 - A small boy, his brother, and his father abandon their car in a blizzard near Albuquerque, New Mexico. Evening approaches and he fears being left behind. As they push on towards a distant highway, they hear a vehicle behind them. It stops and the driver offers a lift. They climb in and he returns them to the motel where his mother anxiously awaits them. The experience leaves a deep impression on the boy that stays with him into old age. January 1960 - Now a junior in high school, the young man struggles to fit in. He's attracted to several girls but is too shy to ask them out. Instead, he concentrates on his after-school jobs. His church and membership in Explorer Scouts remind him of obligations when he really wants to enjoy greater independence. He reaches a critical turning point when his French language teacher persuades him to apply for a summer student exchange program. Still struggling to define his identity, he applies and hopes to be accepted. After failing a major French exam he doubts his chances. His teacher offers him a make-up exam, but first he must write an essay about the exchange program and why he would like to live with a host family in another country. He meets this challenge and is accepted but not in France. An exchange of letters with the son of a host family in Germany heightens his desire to escape his hum-drum suburban life and set out on a great adventure. Using his own money, he buys a ticket on a transcontinental bus and heads for Montreal to board a ship for Europe. Along the way he meets several interesting passengers. He embarks with hundreds of other young Americans from across the country on a ten-day Atlantic crossing. The young man soon realizes that he is on a much grander voyage to see a more interesting world than he had ever imagined in his home town. Reaching port in Holland, he and the others board trains for destinations across Europe. He anticipates that the summer will be a turning point in his life.
