Download or read book Living Downtown written by Paul E. Groth and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the palace hotels of the elite to cheap lodging houses, residential hotels have been an element of American urban life for nearly two hundred years. Since 1870, however, they have been the target of an official war led by people whose concept of home does not include the hotel. Do these residences constitute an essential housing resource, or are they, as charged, a public nuisance? Living Downtown, the first comprehensive social and cultural history of life in American residential hotels, adds a much-needed historical perspective to this ongoing debate. Creatively combining evidence from biographies, buildings and urban neighborhoods, workplace records, and housing policies, Paul Groth provides a definitive analysis of life in four price-differentiated types of downtown residence. He demonstrates that these hotels have played a valuable socioeconomic role as home to both long-term residents and temporary laborers. Also, the convenience of hotels has made them the residence of choice for a surprising number of Americans, from hobo author Boxcar Bertha to Calvin Coolidge. Groth examines the social and cultural objections to hotel households and the increasing efforts to eliminate them, which have led to the seemingly irrational destruction of millions of such housing units since 1960. He argues convincingly that these efforts have been a leading contributor to urban homelessness. This highly original and timely work aims to expand the concept of the American home and to recast accepted notions about the relationships among urban life, architecture, and the public management of residential environments.

Book Honest John Williams

Download or read book Honest John Williams written by Carol E. Hoffecker and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Williams had deep roots in Sussex Country, the most southern, most rural, and most socially conservative part of Delaware. The book examines Williams's involvement in the country's poultry industry from its beginnings during the 1920s through the turbulent World War II years when Sussex poultry producers tangled with federal government officials from the Office of Price Administration and the U.S. Army. The war years coincided with the maturation of poultry production in Sussex that brought the county's people into more complex and wide-ranging economic, social, and political interactions. It was in reaction to these events that John Williams decided to run for the U.S. Senate."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: The picturesque Hopewell Valley is one of New Jerseys finest treasures. Sprawled over more than sixty square miles, the valley encompasses the boroughs of Hopewell and Pennington, the village of Titusville, and the township of Hopewell. From Christmas night of 1776, when George Washington and his troops crossed the Delaware River, to the twentieth century and the saga of Charles Lindberghs missing infant son, Hopewell Valley has been steeped in history and drama. Rare images gathered from the Hopewell Valley Historical Society and local residents make up this monumental pictorial journey. Hopewell Valley combines the famous and not-so-famous elements of these communities nestled between the Delaware River and the Sourland Mountains. Home to key figures in American history, the Hopewell Valley has also seen important developments in architecture and industry. Although modernization has taken hold, the rural character of the area remains intact. And although the area has been home to well-known faces and events, Hopewell Valley is peppered with the lesser-known faces and places that bring out the full flavor.

Book Imagined States

Download or read book Imagined States written by Luisa Del Giudice and published by . This book was released on 2001-06 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An international ensemble of folklore scholars looks at varied ways in which national and ethnic groups have traditionally and creatively used imagined states of existence-some idealizations, some demonizations-in the construction of identities for themselves and for others. Drawing on oral traditions, especially as represented in traditional ballads, broadsides, and tale collections, the contributors consider fertile landscapes of the mind where utopias overflow with bliss and abundance, stereotyped national and ethnic caricatures define the lives of "others," nostalgia glorifies home and occupation, and idealized and mythological animals serve as cultural icons and guideposts to harmonious social life.

Book Reconstructing Christian Theology

Download or read book Reconstructing Christian Theology written by Rebecca S. Chopp and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian theology needs to be reconstructed in light of recent and momentous intellectual changes, social revolutions, and steep pedagogical challenges. That is the conviction of many of North America's leading theologians whose close collaboration over several years bring us this exciting volume. Reconstructing Christian Theology introduces theology in such a way that readers can discern the relevance of historical materials, pose theological questions, and begin to think theologically for themselves. Further, like other projects of the Workgroup on Constructive Theology, this volume stems from a deep desire to model a credible, creative, and engaged contemporary theology. So each chapter tackles major Christian teaching, juxtaposes it with a significant social or cultural challenge, and then reconstructs each in light of the other. The result is an innovative and compelling way to learn how theology can contribute to rethinking the most pressing issues of our day.
