Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harris Papers State OF connecticut. Office OF secretary OF state, hartford, Aug. 3lst, 1865. Ceo. T. Paine, Esq. Dear Sir I am glad to learn that you have in hand so good a work as the Life and Times of William Harris, who well de serves larger notice than he has hitherto received from writers of the early history of New England. I gleaned our colonial archives, with considerable care, for traces of him, in his work for his colony and ours, and embodied the little which I found in the notes and appendices to the second and third volumes of the printed records. Book excerpt: The award–winning author of Brandywine examines a pivotal but overlooked battle of the American Revolution’s Philadelphia Campaign. Today, Germantown is a busy Philadelphia neighborhood. On October 4, 1777, it was a small village on the outskirts of the colonial capital—and the site of one of the American Revolution’s largest battles. Now Michael C. Harris sheds new light on this important action with a captivating historical study. After defeating Washington’s rebel army in the Battle of Brandywine, General Sir William Howe took Philadelphia. But Washington soon returned, launching a surprise attack on the British garrison at Germantown. The recapture of the colonial capital seemed within Washington’s grasp until poor decisions by the American high command led to a clear British victory. With original archival research and a deep knowledge of the terrain, Harris merges the strategic, political, and tactical history of this complex operation into a single compelling account. Complete with original maps, illustrations, and modern photos, and told largely through the words of those who fought there, Germantown is a major contribution to American Revolutionary studies.

This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir of Thaddeus William Harris The difiiculties met with, at length led me to think of some means of making Entomology popular, and I looked to the young as' the proper sub' jects to begin with. With the hope that by exciting a taste among children for this branch of natural history, the parents might become interested also, I have rewritten my introduction in plain and simple language, divested as much as possible of all hard words, and intend to add to it brief descriptions of some of our most common insects. This you may think is small business, but I hope it may at least be useful and entertaining to those for whom it is intended. Book Papers on Syntax

Download or read book Papers on Syntax written by Z. Harris and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The selection of papers reprinted here traces the development of syntax from structural linguistics through transformational linguistics to operator gram mar. These three are not opposing views or independent assumptions about language. Rather, they are successive stages of investigation into the word combinations which constitue the sentences of a language in contrast to those which do not. Throughout, the goal has been to find the systemati cities of these combinations, and then to obtain each sentence in a uniform way from its parts. In structural analysis, the parts were words (simple or complex, belonging to particular classes) or particular sequences of these. In transformational analysis, it is found that the parts of a sentence are elementary sentences, whose parts in turn are simple words of particular classes. The relation between these two analyses is seen in the existence of an intermediate stage between the two, presented in paper 4, From Morpheme to Utterance. A further intermediate stage is presented in the writer's String Analysis of Sentence Structure, Papers on Formal Linguistics I, Mouton, The Hague 1962 (though it was developed after transformations, as a syntactic rep resentation for computational analysis). Generalization of both of these analyses leads to operator grammar, in which each sentence is derived in a uniform way as a partial ordering of the originally simple words which enter into it: Each step (least upper bound) of the partial ordering (of a word requiring another) forms a sentence which is a component of the sentence being analyzed.

Book Occasional Papers of the Boston Society of Natural History Vol 1 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2016-08-27 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Occasional Papers of the Boston Society of Natural History, Vol. 1 It has also seemed best to insert the original descriptions of insects, including the Contributions to Entomology, which were published by Dr. Harris in agricultural newspapers, and are now entirely inaccessible save in the city where the papers were issued; the original paging has been inserted for con venience of reference. Finally, I have added, at the suggestion of Dr. Leconte, such passages of importance in the first edition of Dr. Harris's State Report as were excluded by him from the second edition, to afford space for other material, and were accidentally omitted in the posthumous edition, because it was mainly based upon the second. Thus every important paper or fragment, hitherto inaccessible, has been reproduced, excepting the Hartford essay (no. 31 of the list), which could not be re printed as it appeared without incurring undesirable expense. It is presumed that the articles in horticultural journals are to be found in most libraries which collect such works. Book excerpt: At the nexus of high finance and sophisticated computer programming, a terrifying future may be unfolding even now. Dr. Alex Hoffmann’s name is carefully guarded from the general public, but within the secretive inner circles of the ultrarich he is a legend. He has developed a revolutionary form of artificial intelligence that predicts movements in the financial markets with uncanny accuracy. His hedge fund, based in Geneva, makes billions. But one morning before dawn, a sinister intruder breaches the elaborate security of his lakeside mansion, and so begins a waking nightmare of paranoia and violence as Hoffmann attempts, with increasing desperation, to discover who is trying to destroy him. Fiendishly smart and suspenseful, The Fear Index gives us a searing glimpse into an all-too-recognizable world of greed and panic. It is a novel that forces us to confront the question of what it means to be human—and it is Robert Harris’s most spellbinding and audacious novel to date.
