Book Archeology at Harmony Hall

Download or read book Archeology at Harmony Hall written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In late summer of 1985, archeologists and volunteers with the National Park Service began compliance excavations at Harmony Hall, an eighteenth-century Georgian manor house situated on sixty-three acres of Potomac River frontage in Prince Georges County, Maryland. The purpose of these excavations was to provide clearance for proposed rehabilitation and utility upgrades to the house and grounds prior to construction. As the project progressed, it became clear that this National Register property warranted further detailed investigations as feature after feature was encountered. The most important discovery was the unearthing of evidence indicating a late seventeenth-century occupation of the site. The findings from the archeological excavations at Harmony Hall add to the body of knowledge about life along the seventeenth-century western frontier of Maryland."--Abstract, page i.

Book Galveston Burning A History of the Fire Department and Major Conflagrations

Download or read book Galveston Burning A History of the Fire Department and Major Conflagrations written by James F. Anderson and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2021 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1821, when Jean Lafitte sailed away from a burning Campeche, the history of Galveston has often been wreathed in smoke. Over the next century, one inferno breached the walls of Moro Castle, while another reduced forty-two blocks of the residential district to ash. Recognizing the importance of protecting the city, concerted efforts were made to establish the first paid fire department, create a city waterworks and regulate construction standards. Yet even with all the forethought and planning, rogue fires continued to consume architectural gems like Nicholas Clayton's Electric Pavilion. Author James F. Anderson explores the lessons that Galveston has learned from its fiery past in order to safeguard its future.

Download or read book Fort Washington written by Nathania Branch-Miles and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2006-02 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1809, Gen. George Washington directed the construction of a military post overlooking the Potomac River to protect the city of Washington from the British. Fort Warburton, as it was originally known, was destroyed in 1814 by its own commanding officer, who ordered the fort's destruction on the approach of the British fleet. A strong community remains, thriving on diversity, economic growth, and its close proximity to the nation's capital. Recently, the citizens of Fort Washington renewed their efforts to preserve history; this dedication is evident in the revitalization of Fort Washington Park under the auspices of the National Park Service. Images for this volume, which date to the birth of photography, were drawn from the National Archives and Records and the Library of Congress, as well as private collections.
