Book Tragedy in the Victorian Novel

Download or read book Tragedy in the Victorian Novel written by Jeannette King and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1978-01-26 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does one dominant literary genre fall into decline, to be superseded by another? The classic instance is the rise of the novel in the nineteenth century, and how it came to embody the tragic vision of life which had previously been the domain of drama. Dr King focuses on three novelists, George Eliot. Thomas Hardy and Henry James. All three, while trying to offer a realistic picture of life in prose narrative, wrote with the concept of tragedy clearly in mind. The concern was widespread, and Victorian literary critics found themselves discussing the problem of how one might reconcile concepts as dissimilar as tragedy and realism. Their criticism provides Dr King with her starting point. Dr King examines the work of her three authors in relation to the large concepts of traditional tragic thought, and also examines how the form of specific novels was affected by their differing ideas of tragedy.

Book Writing the Apocalypse

Download or read book Writing the Apocalypse written by Lois Parkinson Zamora and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1989-04-28 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a comparative literary study of apocalyptic themes and narrative techniques in the contemporary North and Latin American novel. Zamora explores the history of the myth of apocalypse, from the Bible to medieval and later interpretations, and relates this to the development of American apocalyptic attitudes. She demonstrates that the symbolic tensions inherent in the apocalytic myth have special meaning for postmodern writers. Zamora focuses her examination on the relationship between the temporal ends and the narrative endings in the works of six major novelists: Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Thomas Pynchon, Julio Cortazar, John Barth, Walker Percy, and Carlos Fuentes. Distinguished by its unique, cross-cultural perspective, this book addresses the question of the apocalypse as a matter of intellectual and literary history. Zamora's analysis will enlighten both scholars of North and Latin American literature and readers of contemporary fiction.

Book Critical Essays on Thomas Hardy

Download or read book Critical Essays on Thomas Hardy written by Dale Kramer and published by Macmillan Reference USA. This book was released on 1990 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Post-World-War-II criticism on a number of Hardy's novels is collected in this volume by an eminent Hardy scholar. Five of these sixteen essays are written as overall treatments of Hardy's broad themes, and the rest focus on individual novels. A variety of approaches are features, including feminist, Marxist and impressionist ones. One of the two original essays looks at his wife Emma's role as chief transcriber and offers a set of criteria for distinguishing her handwriting. Several essays examine Hardy's critical reception: once thought to be crude and unsophisticated, Hardy is now cited by theorists to develop or prove theories on fiction development.

When they return to Casterbridge some nineteen years later, Henchard--having gained power and success as the mayor--finds he cannot erase the past or the guilt that consumes him.
