Book Understanding Key Issues of Sustainable Wood Production in the Pacific Northwest

Download or read book Understanding Key Issues of Sustainable Wood Production in the Pacific Northwest written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers involved with the Pacific Northwest (PNW) Research Station Sustainable Wood Production Initiative have outlined some of the barriers and opportunities for sustainable wood production in the region. Sustainable wood production is defined as the capacity of forests to produce wood, products, and services on a long-term basis and in the context of human activity and use. The collective findings of these papers suggest that in the future, the regions wood supply will primarily come from private land, and the barriers and opportunities related to sustainable wood production will have more to do with future markets, harvest potential, land use changes, and sustainable forestry options than with traditional sustained yield outputs. Private lands in the PNW should be able to sustain recent historical harvest levels over the next 50 years, but regional changes in sawmilling capacity and uncertain market conditions may affect wood production in the region. Public perceptions of forestry, land use changes, and alternative forestry options are also discussed. These papers present preliminary findings and proposals for future work designed to help us understand the key issues related to sustainable wood production.

Book California s Hardwood Resource

Download or read book California s Hardwood Resource written by Philip M. McDonald and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an earlier publication on California's forest-zone hardwoods, 22 reasons were offered for the failure of a sustained hardwood industry to develop. This report presents knowledge developed over the past 18 years on each of these reasons. Progress is reflected in society's shift from a negative to a positive attitude towards the hardwood industry, better estimates of the inventory base and resource values, the advent of small portable sawmills, better lumber drying schedules and equipment, and recognizing the need to furnish promotional material to architects, wholesalers, retailers, and consumers. Realization that the many and complex hardwood ecosystems have value far beyond wood products has led to a new management perspective with four essential parts: emphasis, scheduling, silviculture, and total yield. Hardwood management in the near future will reflect a broadened emphasis on wildlife, water, esthetics, and wood. Desired ecological types will be needed on a schedule involving their timely creation, maintenance, and manipulation over the landscape in perpetuity. Silviculturists will achieve these ecological types, and the resulting amenities and commodities should serve rural California well.

Book Fuelwood Characteristics of Northwestern Conifers and Hardwoods updated

Download or read book Fuelwood Characteristics of Northwestern Conifers and Hardwoods updated written by Pamela L. Wilson and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is an update of the original publication by Oregon State University in 1987 (Resource Bulletin 60). According to agreements, researchers at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Pacific Northwest Research Station and the Juneau Economic Development Council worked with Oregon State University to update this reference concerning wood energy properties. The fuelwood characteristics were reformatted and presented in tabular form, and a literature review was conducted to check for additional information published since 1987. This report provides fuelwood values for 34 conifer and 20 hardwood species found in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. Values are presented for the following characteristics: specific gravity of wood and bark, percentage moisture content of wood and bark, higher heating value of wood and bark, percentage ash of wood and bark, percentage bark by volume, and ultimate analysis of wood and bark (percentage of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur).
