Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MYSTIC EARTH WARRIORS VS. ALIEN CULTS OF CHAOS After a global war had crippled Earth's civilization, lizard-like aliens had thought they would have no trouble in moving in and taking over. That was a big mistake¾secret galactic agents had been training the mystic warriors of Earth to defend themselves against just such a power grab. The alien sociopaths had expected the low-tech humans to be easy pickings, but instead they found they had stumbled into a buzz saw, and were soon driven off. Luis Raoul DenUyl had been only a young recruit in the warrior brotherhood, but still played a pivotal role in what some called The Lizard War. Now, years later, he has just completed his training¾and not a moment too soon. The Helverti, furry but definitely not cute aliens, were members of a cult that revered chaos and tried to spread it throughout the galaxy. To that end, they plan to plunge the different tribes of humanity into war. It's mystic warriors vs. alien technology¾ and the Earthlings are not as weak as they appear.... Further Backgroun On September 1, 1983, a South Korean airliner was shot down by a Soviet fighter plane, killing 269 people. At a point when Earth was already being studied by an advanced space civilization the resulting events gave rise to an alternate time line. Consequences of that singular event captured the attention of the alien's Cultural Oversight Bureau, and also, after a time, of some sociopathic chaos cults. It also gave rise to a Zen-like warrior brotherhood known as the Order of Saint Higuchi. At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management). "A polished and inventive writer." ¾Spider Robinson "An outstanding science fiction novelist." ¾Rave Reviews "... will keep the reader guessing¾and turning pages¾to the very end." ¾West Coast Review of Books

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kit Butler and Lige Turner are weathered trackers—trappers who once lived among the Dakota people as brothers, learning their language, their land, and their way of life. Now, with the fur trade dwindling, they find themselves guides for a wagon train—a group of emigrants leaving behind the comforts of the world they know for the Wild West. The problem is, they have to pass through hostile Dakota Indian territory to reach their destination. The members of the wagon train, fresh faces in a wild land, are certain that all this talk about Indians is just stories—a way to keep a control over them. After all, they haven’t seen any sign of Indians ... But Kit and Lige know what to look for, and they know they’re being watched. When the Indians brutally attack, the stories become a frightening reality. The Dakota warriors tell the emigrants that they must turn around or face their wrath—they will not be allowed to pass through Dakota territory. The emigrants have come too far to turn back, but they are not trained to fight—the women and children handily outnumbering the men in the group. Kit and Lige are the only ones who know how to survive out in the wild, and it is their duty to protect the wagon train against the Dakota men they still consider brothers.

Book Literary Images of West Berlin

Download or read book Literary Images of West Berlin written by Constanze Volhard and published by diplom.de. This book was released on 2003-01-31 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Introduction: This paper is a study of the image of West Berlin in (predominantly West) German literature of the past four decades. There are two aims of this work: one is to illustrate how literature can be an appropriate tool for geographic research, the second is to draw attention to the exceptional political, geographic, and existential situation of the city of West Berlin. I will present some of the psycho-social mentalities connected to living in West Berlin and expose diverse impressions and creative human responses to the living conditions in that city with its unique circumstances. My inquiries center around certain aspects of the human experience. I plan to delineate literary examples of these concepts and show how literature is able to illuminate certain experiential factors concerning the sense of place. To 'sense' can have several meanings. First, it can refer to the function and action of the sensory organs. Then it may imply a more intuitive usage, as in do I sense hostility? When outside of common rules or understanding sense becomes nonsense, or one is out of one's senses. A sense of place is something that goes beyond these usages, it is an impression which is influenced by the sensory organs, but takes its shape in the mind. It is sensing with the help of the imagination, thereby actively involving experience, environment, and emotions. This study does not try to conclude with a nomothetic theory or make a definite statement that can be proved or disproved with statistical or empirical data. Rather it sets out to show that a sense of a place as reflected in creative writing is not only art, but also geography in practice. I shall begin this paper with a review of literature about the combination of geography and literature. This will be followed by a methodology section and a history section which briefly outlines the developments within Berlin that lead up to the Cold War, the city's division, and finally, the dismantling of the wall. Following this, the main body of the work will present and discuss appropriate literary examples. The literature passages comprise four chapters organized according to types of literary images. I have approached the organization of these themes with the help of a geographical structure - gradually moving from the outside of the city further inward until we reach deep emotions. This is essentially an organizing framework that would tie the various images together. Thus, the first [...]
