Book excerpt: This book covers from August 6th, 1967, to August 19th, 1968. During that year, I went from Lance Corporal to Sergeant. Throughout this year, you will see how the other Marines and I dealt with some arrogant leaders who disrespected our knowledge of the field. Other leaders we had were total cowards and did not do their jobs, causing Marines to die in battles that could have been won. You will see how The Bear does his best to protect the Marines in his charge from the stupidity and cowardice of these leaders. By the end of the year, you will understand why the Marines of 3rd Platoon looked to The Bear for leadership more than they did their platoon commanders and platoon sergeants. That was because they knew The Bear was always trying to do what was right in every situation. At the last 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment reunion more than one 3rd Platoon Marine told me that he is alive today, because he listened to "The Bear". I am supremely proud to be "The Bear"!

Book Hard Corps

Download or read book Hard Corps written by Marco Martinez and published by Crown Forum. This book was released on 2008 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the age of 17, Marco Martinez was a thug--a gun-toting, car-stealing gang member. At the age of 22, he was a hero--the recipient of the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism under fire in the Iraq War. This is the story of his incredible transformation and of his experiences on the front lines of the War on Terror. Writing with passion and candor, Martinez brings us back to his gang days, then takes us through the grueling ordeal of Marine boot camp and the even-more-punishing training at the School of Infantry to show just how warriors are made. Then he unfolds a warrior's tale: we join his Marine squad as they patrol the most dangerous war zone imaginable, the narrow, treacherous streets of Baghdad, and into a brutal terrorist ambush that calls upon reserves of ferocity and courage none of the Marines could ever be certain they possessed.--From publisher description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about two forms of service that may appear contradictory: war-fighting and peacemaking, military service and social entrepreneurship. In 2001, Marine officer-in-training Rye Barcott cofounded a nongovernmental organization with two Kenyans in the Kibera slum of Nairobi. Their organization-Carolina for Kibera-grew to become a model of a global movement called participatory development, and Barcott continued volunteering with CFK while leading Marines in dangerous places. It Happened on the Way to War is a true story of heartbreak, courage, and the impact that small groups of committed citizens can make in the world.

Book The Marine Corps Way of War

Download or read book The Marine Corps Way of War written by Anthony Piscitelli and published by . This book was released on 2017-09-19 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Marine Corps Way of War examines the evolving doctrine, weapons, and capability of the United States Marine Corps during the four decades since our last great conflict in Asia. As author Anthony Piscitelli demonstrates, the USMC has maintained its position as the nation's foremost striking force while shifting its thrust from a reliance upon attrition to a return to maneuver warfare. In Indochina, for example, the Marines not only held territory but engaged in now-legendary confrontational battles at Hue, Khe Sanh. As a percentage of those engaged, the Marines suffered higher casualties than any other branch of the service. In the post-Vietnam assessment, however, the USMC ingrained aspects of Asian warfare as offered by Sun Tzu, and returned to its historical DNA in fighting "small wars" to evolve a superior alternative to the battlefield. The institutionalization of maneuver philosophy began with the Marine Corps' educational system, analyzing the actual battle-space of warfare--be it humanitarian assistance, regular set-piece battles, or irregular guerrilla war--and the role that the leadership cadre of the Marine Corps played in this evolutionary transition from attrition to maneuver. Author Piscatelli explains the evolution by using traditional and first-person accounts by the prime movers of this paradigm shift. This change has sometimes been misportrayed, including by the Congressional Military Reform Caucus, as a disruptive or forced evolution. This is simply not the case, as the analyses by individuals from high-level commanders to junior officers on the ground in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere, demonstrate. The ability of the Marines to impact the battlefield--and help achieve our strategic goals--has only increased during the post-Cold War era.Throughout The Marine Corps Way of War: The Evolution of the U.S. Marine Corps from Attrition to Maneuver Warfare in the Post-Vietnam Era, one thing remains clear: the voices of the Marines themselves, in action or through analysis, describing how "the few, the proud" will continue to be America's cutting-edge in the future as we move through the 21st Century. This new work is must-reading for not only every Marine, but for everyone interested in the evolution of the world's finest military force.

  • Author : Kenneth F. McKenzie

Download or read book The Melting Point written by Kenneth F. McKenzie and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2024-06-01 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the Commander of U.S. Central Command, General Frank McKenzie oversaw some of the most important — and controversial operations in modern U.S. military history. He had direct operational responsibility for the strikes on Qassem Soleimani and two successive leaders of ISIS, the many months of deterrence operations against Iran and its proxies, and the methodical drawdown in Iraq. He directed the noncombatant evacuation operation in Afghanistan, and our final withdrawal from that tortured country. The Melting Point has three themes. The first one is the importance of the primacy of civilian control of the military. It has become a widely perceived truth that this control has been eroded over the past few years. General McKenzie doesn’t believe that to be the case, and he speaks with some authority on the matter arguing that the civ-mil relationship isn’t perfect or frictionless, but it doesn’t have to be, and probably shouldn’t be. It is, however, more durable than many believe, and is supported and embraced by the military to a degree that some critics do not choose to recognize. The second theme is the uniqueness of being a combatant commander. Combatant commanders participate in the development of policy, although as junior partners. They are also responsible for the execution of policy once civilian leaders have formulated their decision, a unique position, and very different than the role of a service chief, or even the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. None of these officers are in the chain of command, and they have no ultimate, mortal responsibility or authority for execution. Only the combatant commander stands astride the boundary of decision-making and execution. Finally, the third theme that McKenzie argues is that leaders matter, and the decisions they make have a profound effect on what happens on the battlefield. McKenzie provides an honest assessment of his time in command—describing decisions that were sound, as well as some outcomes he wishes were different. He offers a vivid portrait of leadership in action in one of the most volatile regions of the world.

Book excerpt: In this riveting insider's chronicle, legendary Marine General "Brute" Krulak submits an unprecedented examination of U.S. Marines—their fights on the battlefield and off, their extraordinary esprit de corps. Deftly blending history with autobiography, action with analysis, and separating fact from fable, General Krulak touches the very essence of the Corps: what it means to be a Marine and the reason behind its consistently outstanding performance and reputation. Krulak also addresses the most basic but challenging question of all about the Corps: how does it manage to survive—even to flourish—despite overwhelming political odds and, as the general writes, ""an extraordinary propensity for shooting itself in the foot?"" To answer this question Krulak examines the foundation on which the Corps is built, a system of intense loyalty to God, to country, and to other Marines. He also takes a close look at Marines in war, offering challenging accounts of their experiences in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. In addition, he describes the Corps's relationship to other services, especially during the unification battles following World War II, and offers new insights into the decision-making process in times of crisis. First published in hardcover in 1984, this book has remained popular ever since with Marines of every rank.

What followed over the next 23 days, was an unbelievable tale of intrigue, as salacious facts revealed the murderers had seduced a female prison employee into aiding in their plan to escape. Swept up by their artful manipulation, she smuggled hacksaw blades into the prison in frozen hamburger, engaged in sexual conduct with one of the inmates, and schemed to pick them up at midnight as they emerged from a manhole cover outside prison walls, in the heart of the village. To clear the way for their planned escape to Mexico, there allegedly was even talk of murdering her unsuspecting husband, to remove the “glitch.” This is the inside story of the terrorized community, the outstanding men and women of law enforcement, and the State Trooper responsible for capturing the inmates.

And for ten years, the two sides have tested each other, feinting and parrying, to decide who will be the ones to lead this brave new world into the future.
