Book excerpt: The Book, Letters from South Carolina, is a collection of a total of seventy-five letters to the editor by author, Steven Hawkins, who started writing these letters in 2014. He had, before compiling his collected letters anthology, been published in several newspapers and magazines in South Carolina and North Carolina such as The Greenville News, Asheville Citizen-Times, The Anderson Independent-Mail, The State, The Columbia Star, The Journal scene, Charleston Magazine, Mountain Xpress, and Charlotte Weekly. He writes about the attractions and happenings of the local regional areas that he visited with his family and friends over the years. And he writes about the historic sites and folklore of different areas around the region that he visited over the years with his family and friends on vacation and school and religious trips. Hawkins has also since last year, 2018, recently written to national newspapers such as Detroit Free Press, The Washington Times, The Jersey Journal, New York Daily News, and Miami Herald about movies and music that he always listened to and grew up on. These faraway national cities he visited several times with his family on extended vacations over the years. Hawkins loves to live in his state, South Carolina, and he always loved to visit those “smiling faces and beautiful places” with his family and friends through the years. He hopes through his letters and editorials that people around the country and even around the world will be moved to come visit South Carolina and enjoy all the historic attractions, beaches, small towns, and happenings the state has to offer. He hopes that people will find South Carolina a fast-moving place and its industry and commerce truly a part of the New South. South Carolina is just right.
Download or read book Orbiting the Giant Hairball written by Gordon MacKenzie and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 1998-04-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creativity is crucial to business success. But too often, even the most innovative organization quickly becomes a "giant hairball"--a tangled, impenetrable mass of rules, traditions, and systems, all based on what worked in the past--that exercises an inexorable pull into mediocrity. Gordon McKenzie worked at Hallmark Cards for thirty years, many of which he spent inspiring his colleagues to slip the bonds of Corporate Normalcy and rise to orbit--to a mode of dreaming, daring and doing above and beyond the rubber-stamp confines of the administrative mind-set. In his deeply funny book, exuberantly illustrated in full color, he shares the story of his own professional evolution, together with lessons on awakening and fostering creative genius. Originally self-published and already a business "cult classic", this personally empowering and entertaining look at the intersection between human creativity and the bottom line is now widely available to bookstores. It will be a must-read for any manager looking for new ways to invigorate employees, and any professional who wants to achieve his or her best, most self-expressive, most creative and fulfilling work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “funny, realistic, heartfelt, satiric, and unpredictable” novel about a group of big-city teens with mind-blowing powers (Ned Vizzini, New York Times–bestselling author). It was just an ordinary day at Manhattan’s Bloomberg High School. Socially awkward Olivia Byrne was stressing about her upcoming speech in public speaking class. Cooper Miller was flying high over the Yankees’ win from the night before. Mackenzie Feldman, Cooper’s girlfriend, was dreading the class’s upcoming flu vaccines because of her overwhelming fear of needles. Little did Mackenzie know that the shot would be the least of her worries . . . Now—after getting immunized—most of the students in homeroom 10B have the power to hear everyone’s thoughts: catty remarks, who’s crushing on whom, and what their teachers and parents really think about them. Once the students figure out what’s going on, the question becomes: What do they do with their new superpower? Use it for good . . . or for evil? Because world domination is on the menu . . . “A tour-de-force comic narration that will leave you gasping in awe—if you ever catch your breath from laughing.” —E. Lockhart, #1 New York Times–bestselling author of We Were Liars “Smart and frequently hilarious . . . Filled with heartbreak, hilarity, and some brutal truths, Mlynowski’s novel will leave readers thinking about the gaps between our private and public selves and the lies we tell others and ourselves.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review) “Hilarious, moving, and utterly ingenious.” —Robin Wasserman, author of Girls on Fire
Download or read book Moneybags written by Tulley Holland and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2007-06-17 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1980's, a violent kidnapping leaves several people dead on the C&O Canal Towpath near Georgetown, Washington, D.C. Several days later, a parachutist is found dead, hanging upside down from a tree in the Virginia countryside. The two events seem unrelated, especially to Will MacKenzie, the man who discovers the dead parachutist while walking his dog. MacKenzie, a Viet Nam veteran, is familiar with parachutes, but is puzzled by the color of the parachute as well as the color of the parachutists clothing: all colors are black and the face of the dead man is covered in black camouflage. Additional black parachutes are found by his dog nearby, but these are attached to heavy, black duffle bags. A wrapped packet of hundred dollar bills is partially exposed, next to a small rip in one of the bags. This discovery could change his life, as he is struggling to recover from alcoholism and depression, problems that have caused him to lose his job, his family, and his friends. Faced with a choice of reporting his gruesome find to the authorities, or keeping the bags that may hold a great deal of money, MacKenzie takes the duffle bags to his mountain cabin to examine their contents without being disturbed. He is unaware that his lucky find is part of a large ransom payment. MacKenzies decision to keep the moneybags triggers a trail of violence, as killers from the Mafia, a D.C. drug gang, and a Colombian Drug Cartel, form an unholy alliance to search for the missing ransom. The cast of characters includes the veteran who is trying to rebuild his life, and a woman of wealth, privilege, and power, who find each other as they attempt to escape the tentacles of a billion dollar Drug Empire. A corrupt deputy sheriff and a philanthropist with a secret stand in their way.

Download or read book 2055 written by Jeremy Gilder and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2019-09-26 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “2055” is set in a time when the Chinese governed Australia and its people had grave concerns on two fronts – first, the capacity to produce enough food, and second, the possibility of nuclear war. Even people on the land, with large properties like Ewan Mackenzie, worried about the proliferation of nuclear missiles that had occurred around the globe, knowing that leaders of a number of countries could “pull the trigger” at any moment. This was the reason Ewan decided to purchase a large Unit in one of the enormous nuclear-proof structures the Chinese had built outside of Canberra. When nuclear war broke out, Ewan sought immediate refuge in his Unit. However, this Unit, in the circumstances, became his prison, from which there was to be no escape. As chance would have it a beautiful woman from Ewan’s past, Olivia Langham, found her way into Ewan’s building and an instant attraction began. Ultimately, Ewan and Olivia had the choice of staying together in the building, or somehow escaping into what was certain to be a hostile environment. With help from unexpected sources their lives suddenly took a dramatic and unexpected turn.
Download or read book Depression For Dummies written by Laura L. Smith and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-04-22 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What do you have to be depressed about?" Bet you've heard that one before. Or how about, "You're depressed? Just get over it!" Easier said than done, right? Or here's a favorite, "They have a pill for that now, you know." Unfortunately, such naïve armchair psychology rarely works for someone suffering from the very real plight of depression. All it does is seek to trivialize depression and characterize depressed people as "whiners" who have nothing better to do than to "complain about their lives." But the truth is, depression is a very real problem. In fact, the World Health Organization estimates that, on any given day, 121 million people worldwide suffer from depression. And depression rates continue to increase – for example, kids exhibit depression at nearly ten times the rate of previous generations. Theories abound as to why depression rates are increasing, but regardless of the cause, this scourge continues to rob its victims of happiness, joy, and the capacity to give and receive love. So why Depression For Dummies, when there's already a glut of self-help books on the market peddling so-called cures and remedies for depression? Because this book satisfies the need for a straight-talking, no-nonsense resource on depression. The only agenda of Depression For Dummies is to present you with the facts on depression and explain the options for dealing with it. Rest assured, this is no infomercial in a yellow and black cover. Here's just a sampling of what you'll find in Depression For Dummies: Demystifying the types of depression Discovering what goes on in the body of a depressed person Detecting and diagnosing depression Seeking help through therapy and medication Modifying depressed behavior and solving life's headaches Dealing with depression resulting from grief and relationship issues Cutting through the hype of alternative treatments for depression Moving beyond depression: Avoiding relapses and pursuing a happy life Top Ten lists on getting rid of a your bad mood and helping your kids and other family members out of depression So, whatever your level of depression – whether you suffer from occasional bouts or you find yourself seriously debilitated by depression – Depression For Dummies can give you the insight and tools you need to once again find enjoyment and happiness in life. All it takes is one step.
