Book Revolutionary Legacy Power Structure and Grassroots Capitalism under the Red Flag in China

Download or read book Revolutionary Legacy Power Structure and Grassroots Capitalism under the Red Flag in China written by Qi Zhang and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-05 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do political elites in authoritarian regimes, even within the same country, engage in different levels of predatory behavior, whereby some foster vibrant capitalism and others suffocate the innovative private sector? This book proposes a theory of localized property-rights protection under authoritarianism. By combining in-depth fieldwork with archival research and quantitative data analysis, Qi Zhang and Mingxing Liu discuss the post-1949 conflicts between dominant and marginalized factions in the Chinese province of Zhejiang. These conflicts resulted in systemic vulnerabilities among the marginalized local cadres, thus motivating them to form alliances with their grassroots constituents. They therefore provided their constituents with quasi-public goods, such as property-rights protection, to increase their odds of political survival. Zhang and Liu argue that this framework can apply both to the Mao era and to the current reform era, and it also can be extended beyond China to a wider context.

Download or read book Hybrid Modernity written by Mary G. Padua and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-26 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed historical and design analysis of the development of parks and modern landscape architecture in late 20th century China. It questions whether the fusion of international influences with the local Chinese design vocabulary in late 20th century China has created a distinctive and novel approach to the design of public parks. Hybrid Modernity proposes a new theory for examining the design of public parks built in post-Mao China since the reforms and sets the various processes for China’s late 20th century socio-cultural context. Drawing on modernization theory, research on China’s modernity, local and global cultural trends, it illustrates through a range of case studies ways hybrid modernity defines a new design genre and language for the spatial forms of parks that emerged in China’s secondary cities. Featured case studies include the Living Water Park in Chengdu, Sichuan province, Zhongshan Shipyard Park in Guangdong Province, Jinji Lake Landscape Master Plan in Suzhou, Jiangsu province, and the West Lake Southern Scenic Area Master Plan in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province. This book argues that these forms represent a new stage in China’s history of landscape architecture. The work reveals that as a new profession, landscape architecture has greatly contributed to China’s massive urban experiment. This book is an ideal read for students enrolled in landscape architecture, architecture, fine arts and urban planning programs who are engaged in learning the arts and international design education.

Book Inside Out India and China

Download or read book Inside Out India and China written by William Antholis and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2013-08-14 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the last decade, China and India have grown at an amazing rate—particularly considering the greatest downturn in the U.S. and Europe since the Great Depression. As a result, both countries are forecast to have larger economies than the U.S. or EU in the years ahead. Still, in the last year, signs of a slowdown have hit these two giants. Which way will these giants go? And how will that affect the global economy? Any Western corporation, investor, or entrepreneur serious about competing internationally must understand what makes them tick. Unfortunately, many in the West still look at the two Asian giants as monoliths, closely controlled mainly by their national governments. Inside Out, India and China makes clear how and why this notion is outdated. William Antholis—a former White House and State Department official, and the managing director at Brookings—spent five months in India and China, travelling to over 20 states and provinces in both countries. He explored the enormously diversity in business, governance, and culture of these nations, temporarily relocating his entire family to Asia. His travels, research, and interviews with key stakeholders make the unmistakable point that these nations are not the immobile, centrally directed economies and structures of the past. More and more, key policy decisions in India and China are formulated and implemented by local governments—states, provinces, and fast-growing cities. Both economies have promoted entrepreneurship, both by private sector and also local government officials. Some strategies work. Others are fatally flawed. Antholis’s detailed narratives of local innovation in governance and business—as well as local failures—prove the point that simply maintaining a presence in Beijing and New Delhi – or even Shanghai and Mumbai —is not enough to ensure success in China or India, just as one cannot expect to succeed in America simply by setting up in Washington or New York. Each nation is as large, vibrant, innovative, diverse, and increasingly decentralized as are the United States, Europe and all of Latin America … combined. China and India each have their own agricultural heartlands, high-tech corridors, resource-rich areas, and powerhouse manufacturing regions. They also have major economic, social, environmental challenges facing them. But few people outside these countries can name those places, or have a mental map of how the local parts of these countries are shaping their global futures. Organizations, businesses, and other governments that do not recognize and plan for this evolution may miss that the most important changes in these emerging giants are coming from the inside out. “This book is for people who wonder about the inside of China and India, and how different local perspectives inside those countries shape actions outside their borders. Though my family and I spent five months traveling in both countries to do research, this book is not a travelogue. Rather, it is an attempt to sketch how a few of China’s and India’s many component parts are being shaped by global forces—and in turn are shaping those forces—and what that means for Americans and Europeans conducting diplomacy and doing business there.”—from the Introduction

Book The New Travels of Marco Polo

Download or read book The New Travels of Marco Polo written by Hans Wilm Schütte and published by . This book was released on 2016-10-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As a thriving and competitive province in China, Zhejiang has a population of 56 million, ranking 10th among provinces in the country, but the household disposable income in Zhejiang province is far ahead of that in other provinces, except for Beijing and Shanghai. There are no other provinces with more Mercedes and BMWs than Zhejiang, which might be a proof of its strong economy. Among the most well-known discoveries of Zhejiang are Hemudu Culture and Liangzhu Culture, both dating back to more than 5,000 years ago. Hundreds of years ago, Marco Polo praised Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang, as "the most splendid city in the world. " Marco Polo also detailed the rich and prosperous life of Hangzhou residents. The vivid description of a Venetian traveler on the avenue by the West Lake has been permanently reserved, sharing similarity with those by other travelers. Nowadays, the local residents have more to be proud of. Since 2004, Hangzhou has been crowned the "Happiest City" in China for 5 consecutive years. Meanwhile, other three large cities in the province, Ningbo, Shaoxing and Taizhou, rank in the top 10."--Provided by publisher.

Book Change Of China s Rural Community A Case Study Of Zhejiang s Jianshanxia Village

Download or read book Change Of China s Rural Community A Case Study Of Zhejiang s Jianshanxia Village written by Dan Mao and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2019-11-07 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the industrialization process of Jianshanxia, a mountain village in Zhejiang Province, and its organizational changes since China's reform and opening-up. As a small mountain village far from the city, Jianshanxia Village used its contingent funds to open up a factory collectively owned by the village. At that time, it was common for city dwellers to run a factory in cities but this was still rare in rural areas. The book analyzes how the village could quickly claim a large market share of the domestic electric mosquito incense market. The successful industrialization of the village increased the income of the villagers, improved its appearance and enhanced its collective economic strength. In retrospect, the transformation of this village was a miracle and a typical example of industrialization of township enterprises in China.
