Book Out of the Pocket

Download or read book Out of the Pocket written by Kirk Herbstreit and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2022-08-02 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This powerfully intimate, plain-spoken memoir about fathers and sons, fortitude, and football from the face and voice of college football—Kirk Herbstreit—is not just “a window into the game, but also a peek into what makes him special: his heart” (David Shaw, head coach, Stanford University). Kirk Herbstreit is a reflection of the sport he loves, a reflection of his football-crazed home state of Ohio, where he was a high school star and Ohio State captain, and a reflection of another Ohio State football captain thirty-two years earlier: his dad Jim, who battled Alzheimer’s disease until his death in 2016. In Out of the Pocket, Herbstreit does what his father did for him: takes you inside the locker rooms, to the practice fields, to the meeting rooms, to the stadiums. Herbstreit describes how a combination of hard work, perseverance, and a little luck landed him on the set of ESPN’s iconic College GameDay show, surrounded by tens of thousands of fans who treat their Saturdays like a football Mardi Gras. He takes you into the television production meetings, on to the GameDay set, and into the broadcast booth. You’ll live his life during a football season, see the things he sees, experience every chaotic twist and turn as the year unfolds. Not to mention the relationships he’s established and the insights he’s learned from the likes of coaches and players such as Nick Saban, Tim Tebow, Dabo Swinney, and Peyton Manning, as well as his colleagues, including Chris Fowler, Rece Davis, and his “second dad,” the beloved Coach Lee Corso. Yes, Kirk Herbstreit is the undeniable face and voice of college football—but he’s also a survivor. He’s the quiet kid who withstood the collapse of his parents’ marriage. The boy who endured too many overbearing stepdads and stepmoms. The painfully shy student who always chose the last desk in the last row of the classroom. The young man who persevered through a frustrating Ohio State playing career. The new college graduate who turned down a lucrative sales job after college to pursue a “no way you’ll make it” dream career in broadcasting. Inspiring and powerful, Out of the Pocket “proves the importance of perseverance and family” (Peyton Manning).

Book Muscles as Molecular and Metabolic Machines

Download or read book Muscles as Molecular and Metabolic Machines written by Peter W. Hochachka and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1994, this book explores the paradigm of muscles as molecular and metabolic machines in which all structures and functions are exquisitely integrated and matched to each other. The analysis begins with a standard reductionist approach-reviewing the integrated machine parts. The key working components of the complete muscle machine are proteins (soluble, organelle, or membrane localized), and a conservative count indicates that today more than 100 such machine parts are known, essentially all occurring as cell specific isoforms. Random assortment of these machine parts or protein isoforms could generate an astronomical number of "muscle machines" and an equally enormous number of muscle fiber types. The question is, why aren't such large numbers ever seen? To attack this problem, the reductionist approach is complemented with an integrationist/adaptational one. Evidence is presented that the more highly specialized the muscle type, the further one moves from the above extreme; in the most highly specialized muscles, typically only one fiber type is found. It is argued that instead of random assortment of isoforms or machine parts, only specific and often unique combinations can work in appropriate fashion. A few established examples of this fundamental principle are reviewed, but emphasis is placed on the fact that we know dreadfully little about why this is so and what kinds of further studies are needed. The issue of why the very large numbers of fiber types theoretically possible are never even approximately realized has never before been addressed. Indeed, it is rarely recognized. Muscles as Molecular and Metabolic Machines is the first work of its kind on the subject.

This book was released on 2016-03-19 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of First and Ten on the Twenty..Is it Football, Business or Life? was derived from the following universal concept-- one has to go through the thirty- yard line before one gets to the forty, and then the forty- yard line until one gets to the fifty- yard line, reaching the halfway point before progressing through another fifty yards to score a touchdown . The same is true in business and in life. All progress and achievements are built on incrementalism. While this was not the only comparison between business and life to football, the books concept was born. Football is more than a game; there is a process for accomplishment and success built into it. It is a process that can be replicated in both business and in life, even if one is not a devout football fan. Watching and observing numerous football games, the process began to clarify and to take shape. In First and Ten on The Twenty is it Football Business or Life? topics are covered such as Attitude, Preparation, The Fumble, The Person in The Skybox, Creating Fans, Crossing the Goal Line, The Defense-Obstacles, The Draft, Preparation and much more. The book details twenty-five distinct items that will greatly assist in creating a well organized and thought out plan. To quote the book, A great attitude coupled with a well thought out and executed plan is the path to success. A great attitude without a plan is only a party.
