Book excerpt: An estimated 293,000 farm workers are eligible for vocational rehabilitation (VR) services. Farm workers' disability rate is three times that of the general U.S. population. Nevertheless, farm workers are less likely than the rest of the population to receive VR services. Farm workers receiving VR services are less likely to be successfully rehabilitated. Relatively high unmet needs among farm workers are attributable to "service delivery barriers" related to special characteristics of that population. The barriers could be overcome by state VR agencies if they augmented their present service delivery systems with a system for farm workers, as described herein. Adoption of the supplementary system could be encouraged by a federally co-ordinated and funded program of grants, technical assistance and VR program adjustments.

Book The Migratory Farm Labor Problem in the United States

Subcommittee on Migratory Labor and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Migratory farm workers employed in 688 countries in 46 states in 1965 represent a 9 percent increase over 1964. Average earnings for the migratory farm worker in 1965 were $1,737. In spite of the new legislation, which is described, there are additional needs in the areas of wages, child labor, health, education, day care, housing, sanitation, and Volunteers in Service to America. The following corrective legislation was recommended: (1) extension of collective bargaining rights to migrant workers under the National Labor Relations Act, (2) modernized recruitment procedures to result in substantial year-round employment and a more stabilized labor supply, (3) establishment of a national advisory committee, (4) rapid tax amortization for construction of migrant housing, (5) extension of compulsory workmen's compensation laws, (6) unemployment insurance laws for migratory farm workers, (7) modification of old age, survivors, and disability insurance, and (8) public welfare assistance based on need rather than residence. The appendixes contain information concerning domestic agricultural migrants in the United States by states and county and grant assistance by state and project. A map of domestic agricultural migrants by county in the United States and a minority report by two committee members are included.

Book Fresh Fruit Broken Bodies

Download or read book Fresh Fruit Broken Bodies written by Seth Holmes and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2013-05-25 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies provides an intimate examination of the everyday lives and suffering of Mexican migrants in our contemporary food system. An anthropologist and MD in the mold of Paul Farmer and Didier Fassin, Holmes shows how market forces, anti-immigrant sentiment, and racism undermine health and health care. Holmes’s material is visceral and powerful. He trekked with his companions illegally through the desert into Arizona and was jailed with them before they were deported. He lived with indigenous families in the mountains of Oaxaca and in farm labor camps in the U.S., planted and harvested corn, picked strawberries, and accompanied sick workers to clinics and hospitals. This “embodied anthropology” deepens our theoretical understanding of the ways in which social inequalities and suffering come to be perceived as normal and natural in society and in health care. All of the book award money and royalties from the sales of this book have been donated to farm worker unions, farm worker organizations and farm worker projects in consultation with farm workers who appear in the book.

Book They Leave Their Kidneys in the Fields

Download or read book They Leave Their Kidneys in the Fields written by Sarah Horton and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2016-07-19 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "They Leave Their Kidneys in the Fields takes the reader on an ethnographic tour of the melon and corn harvesting fields in California's Central Valley to understand why farmworkers die at work each summer. Laden with captivating detail of farmworkers' daily work and home lives, Horton examines how U.S. immigration policy and the historic exclusion of farmworkers from the promises of liberalism has made migrant farmworkers what she calls 'exceptional workers.' She explores the deeply intertwined political, legal, and social factors that place Latino migrants at particular risk of illness and injury in the fields, as well as the patchwork of health care, disability, and Social Security policies that provide them little succor when they become sick or grow old. The book takes an in-depth look at the work risks faced by migrants at all stages of life: as teens, in their middle-age, and ultimately as elderly workers. By following the lives of a core group of farmworkers over nearly a decade, Horton provides a searing portrait of how their precarious immigration and work statuses culminate in preventable morbidity and premature death"--Provided by publisher.
