Book Handcrafted Careers

Download or read book Handcrafted Careers written by Eli Revelle Yano Wilson and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As workers attempt new modes of employment in the era of the Great Resignation, they face a labor landscape that is increasingly uncertain and stubbornly unequal. With Handcrafted Careers, sociologist Eli Revelle Yano Wilson dives head-first into the everyday lives of workers in the craft beer industry to address key questions facing American workers today--about what makes a good career, who gets to have one, and how career progress in craft brewing might unfold. Wilson argues that what ends up contributing to divergent career paths in craft beer is a complex interplay of workers' own social connections, personal tastes, and cultural ideas about work, as well as crucial industry structures that are exclusionary. The culture of work in craft beer is based around normative white male ideals that can lead to select opportunities for some while limiting the advancement of women and people of color. A fresh perspective on this and other similar niche industries, Handcrafted Careers offers key insights into how people navigate worlds of work that promote ideas of authenticity and passion yet in reality can be unpredictable"--Provided by publisher.

Book Introduction to Crowd Science

Download or read book Introduction to Crowd Science written by G. Keith Still and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-06-30 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demonstrates Real-World Case Studies from a Range of Event Sites Introduction to Crowd Science examines the growing rate of crowd-related accidents and incidents around the world. Using tools, methods, and worked examples gleaned from over 20 years of experience, this text provides an understanding of crowd safety. It establishes how crowd accidents and incidents (specifically mass fatalities in crowded spaces) can occur. It explores the underlying causes of incidences and implements techniques for crowd risk analysis and crowd safety engineering that can help minimize and even eliminate occurrences altogether. Understand Overall Crowd Dynamics and Levels of Complex Structure The book outlines a simple modeling approach to crowd risk analysis and crowds safety in places of public assembly. With consideration for major events, and large-scale urban environments, the material focuses on the practical elements of developing the crowd risk analysis and crowd safety aspects of an event plan. It outlines a range of modeling techniques, including line diagrams that represent crowd flow, calculations of the speed at which a space can fill, and the time it takes for that space to reach critical and crush density. It also determines what to consider during the event planning and approval (licensing/permitting) phases of the event process. Introduction to Crowd Science addresses key questions and presents a systematic approach to managing crowd risks in complex sites. It provides an understanding of the complexity of a site, and helps the reader plan for crowds in public places.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is not a "How to." There is no “one size fits all” when it comes to routine. Dr. Iscovich shares his original study of routine—learn through his observations how routine can improve longevity, performance, and adaptability. You will be better equipped to construct a routine that works best for you! Conventional wisdom suggests that the best way to navigate our noisy new world is to accept change. Open up to novelty. Go with the flow. Live in the moment. Embrace the relentless pelting of content minute by minute. But routine experts Angel Iscovich, MD, Joe Garner, and Michael Ashley are here to say that’s a bad idea. Humans don’t just benefit from structure; they require it. Years of observation and practice led to their breakthrough concept of routineology, the key to optimize your life and the cure for crisis. Routineology’s fundamental prescriptive is to look inside and live your life in a “time bubble” to find purpose, meaning, and joy. Offering insights from top performers and stories of triumph over adversity, this book demonstrates that routine isn’t just a good idea—it’s imperative for surviving and thriving today. Live a life of deeper meaning and navigate toward a better world with The Art of Routine.

Download or read book Text Mining written by Sholom M. Weiss and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-01-08 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data mining is a mature technology. The prediction problem, looking for predictive patterns in data, has been widely studied. Strong me- ods are available to the practitioner. These methods process structured numerical information, where uniform measurements are taken over a sample of data. Text is often described as unstructured information. So, it would seem, text and numerical data are different, requiring different methods. Or are they? In our view, a prediction problem can be solved by the same methods, whether the data are structured - merical measurements or unstructured text. Text and documents can be transformed into measured values, such as the presence or absence of words, and the same methods that have proven successful for pred- tive data mining can be applied to text. Yet, there are key differences. Evaluation techniques must be adapted to the chronological order of publication and to alternative measures of error. Because the data are documents, more specialized analytical methods may be preferred for text. Moreover, the methods must be modi?ed to accommodate very high dimensions: tens of thousands of words and documents. Still, the central themes are similar.
