Book Soil Survey Manual U S Department of Agriculture Handbook No 18

Download or read book Soil Survey Manual U S Department of Agriculture Handbook No 18 written by U.S. Department of Agriculture and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-04-06 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Soil Survey Manual, USDA Handbook No. 18, provides the major principles and practices needed for making and using soil surveys and for assembling and using related data. The term "soil survey" is used here to encompass the process of mapping, describing, classifying, and interpreting natural three-dimensional bodies of soil on the landscape. This work is performed by the National Cooperative Soil Survey in the United States and by other similar organizations worldwide. The Manual provides guidance, methodology, and terminology for conducting a soil survey but does not necessarily convey policies and protocols required to administer soil survey operations. The soil bodies contain a sequence of identifiable horizons and layers that occur in repeating patterns in the landscape as a result of the factors of soil formation as described by Dokuchaev (1883) and Jenny (1941).

Book Handbook of Geophysical Cavity locating Techniques with Emphasis on Electrical Resistivity

Download or read book Handbook of Geophysical Cavity locating Techniques with Emphasis on Electrical Resistivity written by Keith G. Kirk and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook is primarily a description of the methodology of using earth resistivity techniques for locating cavities. Only a small portion of the handbook will be devoted to the theoretical considerations behind these techniques. However, the annotated bibliography cites ample literature to satisfy the needs of the theoretician. Along with earth resistivity techniques, several geophysical techniques will be examined in lesser detail with respect to cavity location. Micro-gravity, high-resolution seismic reflection profiling, and ground probing radar were selected because they show good success rates in cavity detection. High-resolution seismic profiling shows particularly good promise as an effective tool in cavity location. Techniques in photo interpretation will also be discussed with regard to possible cavity location.

Book Handbook of Electrical Installation Practice

Download or read book Handbook of Electrical Installation Practice written by Geoffrey Stokes and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handbook of Electrical Installation Practice covers all key aspects of industrial, commercial and domestic installations and draws on the expertise of a wide range of industrial experts. Chapters are devoted to topics such as wiring cables, mains and submains cables and distribution in buildings, as well as power supplies, transformers, switchgear, and electricity on construction sites. Standards and codes of practice, as well as safety, are also included. Since the Third Edition was published, there have been many developments in technology and standards. The revolution in electronic microtechnology has made it possible to introduce more complex technologies in protective equipment and control systems, and these have been addressed in the new edition. Developments in lighting design continue, and extra-low voltage luminaries for display and feature illumination are now dealt with, as is the important subject of security lighting. All chapters have been amended to take account of revisions to British and other standards, following the trend to harmonised European and international standards, and they also take account of the latest edition of the Wiring Regulations. This new edition will provide an invaluable reference for consulting engineers, electrical contractors and factory plant engineers.

Book Foundation Engineering Handbook

Download or read book Foundation Engineering Handbook written by Hsai-Yang Fang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 935 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than ten years have passed since the first edition was published. During that period there have been a substantial number of changes in geotechnical engineering, especially in the applications of foundation engineering. As the world population increases, more land is needed and many soil deposits previously deemed unsuitable for residential housing or other construction projects are now being used. Such areas include problematic soil regions, mining subsidence areas, and sanitary landfills. To overcome the problems associated with these natural or man-made soil deposits, new and improved methods of analysis, design, and implementation are needed in foundation construction. As society develops and living standards rise, tall buildings, transportation facilities, and industrial complexes are increasingly being built. Because of the heavy design loads and the complicated environments, the traditional design concepts, construction materials, methods, and equipment also need improvement. Further, recent energy and material shortages have caused additional burdens on the engineering profession and brought about the need to seek alternative or cost-saving methods for foundation design and construction.

Book Soils in Archaeological Research

Download or read book Soils in Archaeological Research written by Vance T. Holliday and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-08-19 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soils, invaluable indicators of the nature and history of the physical and human landscape, have strongly influenced the cultural record left to archaeologists. Not only are they primary reservoirs for artifacts, they often encase entire sites. And soil-forming processes in themselves are an important component of site formation, influencing which artifacts, features, and environmental indicators (floral, faunal, and geological) will be destroyed and to what extent and which will be preserved and how well. In this book, Holliday will address each of these issues in terms of fundamentals as well as in field case histories from all over the world. The focus will be on principles of soil geomorphology , soil stratigraphy, and soil chemistry and their applications in archaeological research.

Book The Development of Southeastern Archaeology

Download or read book The Development of Southeastern Archaeology written by Jay K. Johnson and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 1993-02-28 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten scholars whose specialties range from ethnohistory to remote sensing and lithic analysis to bioarchaeology chronicle changes in the way prehistory in the Southeast has been studied since the 19th century. Each brings to the task the particular perspective of his or her own subdiscipline in this multifaceted overview of the history of archaeology in a region that has had an important but variable role in the overall development of North American archaeology. Some of the specialties discussed in this book were traditionally relegated to appendixes or ignored completely in site reports more than 20 years old. Today, most are integral parts of such reports, but this integration has been hard won. Other specialties have been and will continue to be of central concern to archaeologists. Each chapter details the way changes in method can be related to changes in theory by reviewing major landmarks in the literature. As a consequence, the reader can compare the development of each subdiscipline. As the first book of this kind to deal specifically with the region, it be will valuable to archaeologists everywhere. The general reader will find the book of interest because the development of southeastern archaeology reflects trends in the development of social science as a whole. Contributors include: Jay K.
