Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of British Rubi The Irish Rubi are still known very imperfectly, though Within the last few years considerable progress has been made in the examination of those growing on the eastern side of the island, and in the Counties Galway, Mayo and Westmeath. Most of our English species have already been found; some of them abundantly. A few forms discovered quite recently are as yet unknown in Great Britain, and this small special list for Ireland seems likely to be somewhat increased within the next ten or twenty years. As far back as 1895 Dr. Focke wrote as follows to the Rev. E. S. Marshall From the geographical position of Ireland and from several botanical facts we may expect to meet with in that country a few species of S. -w. Origin, growing perhaps in the north of Spain or in s.-w. France.' But he added, I suppose most of the unknown Irish Rubi will prove to be local species or varieties, including perhaps a good deal of hybrids.' Book Dictionary Of British And Irish Botantists And Horticulturalists Including plant collectors flower painters and garden designers

Download or read book Dictionary Of British And Irish Botantists And Horticulturalists Including plant collectors flower painters and garden designers written by Ray Desmond and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-12-23 with total page 866 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past four centuries botanists and gardeners in the British Isles have gathered, maintained and propagated many varying species of plants. Their work has been documented in innumerable books and articles which are often difficult to trace. The Dictionary of British and Irish Botanists and Horticulturalists represents a time-saving reference source for those who wish to discover more about the lives and achievements of the horticulturalists listed. The dictionary's utility comes not only from indicating the major publications of the named authors, but also the location of their herbaria and manuscripts.; The previous 1977 edition of the Dictionary has for many years been a much used source of information for botanists, botanic artists and archivists. In this revised edition the scope has been expanded to include among its 13,000 entries flower painters in addition to botanical artists over 1400 entries and, for the first time, garden designers.; Finally the Dictionary should have international appeal since so many botanists and gardeners worked on collective plants overseas, in particular in North America and the British Commonwealth.; Each entry gives, wherever possible, details of dates and places of birth and death, educational qualifications, professional posts, honours and awards, publications, location of plant collections, manuscripts, drawings and portraits. Its main function, however, is to provide further biographical references to books and periodicals. Comprehensive classified indices facilitate access by professions and activities, countries, and plant interests.

Book Reproductive Biology and Taxonomy of Vascular Plants

Download or read book Reproductive Biology and Taxonomy of Vascular Plants written by J. G. Hawkes and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reproductive Biology and Taxonomy of Vascular Plants is a collection of papers presented at the Conference on Reproductive Biology and Taxonomy of Vascular Plants, held at the Department of Botany, University of Birmingham on April 23-25, 1965. The conference primarily explores the reproductive biology of flowering plants and ferns to arrive at a better understanding of variation patterns and modes of evolution. This book is divided into six chapters and begins with a discussion on the breeding systems, variation and adaptation. The next chapters survey the practical implications of knowledge of breeding systems and other aspects of the reproductive biology of flowering plants, as well as the pollination mechanisms in orchids and the evolution of this family in relation to insect evolution. These chapters include an account of the foraging behavior of honey bees and its importance to the botanist in delineating the behavior of the insects that pollinate the plants. Other chapters deal with the mechanisms of plant dispersal and establishment, the aspects of seed dormancy, and germination and reproductive capacity related to evolutionary processes. The concluding chapters explore the many aspects of apomixis in its wider sense and survey how the variation patterns of apomicts were due to this special mode of reproduction. This book is directed primarily to botanists.
