Book Fish Species of New Zealand

Download or read book Fish Species of New Zealand written by Jorge Hirt-Chabbert and published by Raupo. This book was released on 2008-10-27 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What kind of dory have you caught? At what depth and where on the continental shelf are trevally most likely to be caught? What other fish are these most likely to be confused with? This book is the result of research and observation of fishes most commonly caught (and sometimes confused) by commercial and recreational fishers. Jorge Hirt-Chabbert provides a user-friendly guide that makes the process of identifying your catch simple. Visual clues are the paramount guide to naming your fish, with technical information about the species kept to a minimum. Each entry includes facts that will enhance your knowledge of a species such as spawning times, average length and weight, and physical features unique to a species. Fish Species of New Zealand is a book for all fishers, whether beginner or expert. It can be used as a guide to a focused species catch, or as a reference to find out what's been caught while fishing from a dinghy.

Book Migration Ecology of Marine Fishes

The book provides overviews of the following concepts: The comparative movement ecology of fishes and birds; The alignment of mating systems with larval dispersal; Schooling and migration as adaptations to marine food webs; Natal homing; Connectivity in populations and metapopulations; The contribution of migration ecology to population resilience

Book New Zealand Freshwater Fishes

Download or read book New Zealand Freshwater Fishes written by R.M. McDowall and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-07-27 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many ways, this book is the culmination of more than four decades of my exp- ration of the taxonomy, biogeography and ecology of New Zealand’s quite small freshwater fish fauna. I began this firstly as a fisheries ecologist with the New Zealand Marine Department (then responsible for the nation’s fisheries research and mana- ment), and then with my PhD at the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA in the early–mid 1960s. Since then, employed by a series of agencies that have successively been assigned a role in fisheries research in New Zealand, I have been able to explore very widely the natural history of that fauna. Studies of the fishes of other warm to cold temperate southern lands have followed, particularly southern Australia, New Caledonia, Patagonian South America, the Falkland Islands, and South Africa and, in many ways, have provided the rather broader context within which the New Zealand fauna is embedded in terms of geography, phylogeny, and evolutionary history, and knowing this context makes the patterns within New Zealand all the clearer. An additional stream in these studies, in substantial measure driven by the beh- ioural ecology of these fishes round the Southern Hemisphere, has been exploration of the role of diadromy (regular migrations between marine and freshwater biomes) in fisheries ecology and biogeography, and eventually of diadromous fishes wor- wide.

Book Handbook of Marine Fisheries Conservation and Management

Download or read book Handbook of Marine Fisheries Conservation and Management written by R. Quentin Grafton and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-21 with total page 785 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook is the most comprehensive and interdisciplinary work on marine conservation and fisheries management ever compiled. It is the first to bridge fisheries and marine conservation issues. Its innovative ideas, detailed case studies, and governance framework provide a global special perspective over time and treat problems in the high seas, community fisheries, industrial fishing, and the many interactions between use and non-use of the oceans. Its policy tools and ideas for overcoming the perennial problems of over fishing, habitat and biodiversity loss address the facts that many marine ecosystems are in decline and plagued by overexploitation due to unsustainable fishing practices. An outstanding feature of the book is the detailed case-studies on conservation practice and fisheries management from around the world. These case studies are combined with 'foundation' chapters that provide an overview of the state of the marine world and innovative and far reaching perspectives about how we can move forward to face present and future challenges. The contributors include the world's leading fisheries scientists, economists, and managers. Ecosystem and incentive-based approaches are described and complemented by tools for cooperative, participatory solutions. Unique themes treated: fisher behavior and incentives for management beyond rights-based approaches; a synthesis of proposed 'solutions'; a framework for understanding and overcoming the critical determinants of the decline in fisheries, degradation of marine ecosystems, and poor socio-economic performance of many fishing communities; models for innovative policy instruments; a plan of action and adoption pathways to promote sustainable fishing practices globally. Collectively, the handbook's many valuable contributions offer a way forward to both understanding and resolving the multifaceted problems facing the world's oceans.
