Book The Rise of The Rest

Download or read book The Rise of The Rest written by Alice H. Amsden and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001-01-18 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After World War II a select number of countries outside Japan and the West--those that Alice Amsden calls "the rest"--gained market share in modern industries and altered global competition. By 2000, a great divide had developed within "the rest", the lines drawn according to prewar manufacturing experience and equality in income distribution. China, India, Korea and Taiwan had built their own national manufacturing enterprises that were investing heavily in R&D. Their developmental states had transformed themselves into champions of science and technology. By contrast, Argentina, Brazil and Mexico had experienced a wave of acquisitions and mergers that left even more of their leading enterprises controlled by multinational firms. The developmental states of Mexico and Turkey had become hand-tied by membership in NAFTA and the European Union. Which model of late industrialization will prevail, the "independent" or the "integrationist," is a question that challenges the twenty-first century.

Book Globalisation and Interdependence in the International Political Economy

Download or read book Globalisation and Interdependence in the International Political Economy written by R. J. Barry Jones and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-11-07 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalisation and Interdependence in the International Political Economy addresses central developments within the contemporary international system. The notions of interdependence and globalisation that have accompanied the political discourse of 'a new world disorder' are replete with definitional ambiguities, theoretical difficulties and empirical complexities. Barry Jones offers a critical review and analysis of these concepts, their significance and place within the wider debates of international political economy. He argues that contemporary conditions are complex, with regionalising tendencies cross-cutting those of increasing globalisation, and 'national' impulses surviving even in the face of powerful 'internationalising' forces. Future developments, it is concluded, may also be far more uncertain and turbulent than is widely anticipated. Written by a leading authority, this volume is an effective and compelling introduction to the complex study of international political economy.

Book Avoiding the Apocalypse

Download or read book Avoiding the Apocalypse written by Marcus Noland and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2000-06-01 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the Korean peninsula one of the greatest success stories of the postwar era confronts a famine-ridden—and possibly nuclear-armed—totalitarian state. The stakes are extraordinarily high for both North and South Korea and for countries such as the United States that have a direct stake in these affairs. This study, the most comprehensive volume to date on the subject, examines the current situation in the two Koreas in terms of three major crises: the nuclear confrontation between the United States and North Korea, the North Korean famine, and the South Korean financial crisis. The future of the peninsula is then explored under three alternative scenarios: successful reform in North Korea, collapse and absorption (as happened in Germany), and "muddling through" in which North Korea, supported by foreign powers, makes ad hoc, regime-preserving reforms that fall short of fundamental transformation.

Book Globalization Growth and Marginalization

Download or read book Globalization Growth and Marginalization written by A.S. Bhalla and published by Springer. This book was released on 1998-09-12 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization is defined in economic terms to mean freer flows of trade, foreign direct investment and finance, and liberalization of trade and investment policies. Impacts of globalization and information technology are examined in terms of growth and productivity, poverty and income distribution, and employment. Experiences of Africa, East and Southeast Asia, South Asia, and Latin America in the era of globalization are discussed. It is argued that benefits of freer trade and capital flows need to be managed carefully in order to minimise the costs and maximise gains.

Finally, the likely impact on North-South relations of pursuing alternative paradigms to economic growth is examined.

Book Manufacturing for Export in the Developing World

Download or read book Manufacturing for Export in the Developing World written by Gerry Helleiner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1995-09-07 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, much has been made of the success of developing countries, particularly in East Asia, which have achieved economic growth by manufacturing goods which are then exported to developed economies. Case studies of five countries uncover serious potential difficulties in maintaining the pace of manufacturing for export in the developing countries, and shows that there is no simple relationship between import liberalization and manufacturing for export.
