Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mineral Wealth of Canada: A Guide for Students of Economic Geology IN estimating the natural resources of our Dominion one thinks first of the boundless acres of fertile soil. These, a perennial source of wealth, which under good management can never be exhausted, are certainly our principal asset. At the same time it must be remembered that the annual production of both our forests and our fisheries amounts to many million dollars. Until recently the product of our mines was the least Of these four resources, and this was not because we were without mineral resources, but that we had barely begun to exploit them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Student's Manual of Geology The Author of this work had made some progress in the preparation of the present edition before the illness seized him by which he was removed from among us. Finding the task to be greater than, with his impaired health, he could accomplish, he asked me to relieve him of it; and I accord ingly undertook to prepare this re-issue. My labours, how ever, were unfortunately suspended for nearly a year in consequence of a fever caught among the volcanic islands of the Liparis. Hence the delay in the appearance of the work. The reader will observe, on comparing the present with former editions, that so many changes have been made that it may in some respects be regarded as a new book. A large mass of additional material has been added; but, by adopting a different mode of printing, this has been effected without adding to the bulk of the volume. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Elementary Geology: Or the Ancient Changes of the Earth and Its Inhabitants He was soon informed by Mr. Logan, at that time engaged in the geological survey of Canada, that the white sandstone above Montreal was really much older than the Old Red, or Devonian. It had in fact been ascertained many years before, by the State surveyors of New York (who called it the Potsdam to lie at the base of the whole Silurian series. As such it had been pointed out to me in 1841, in the valley of the Mohawk, by Mr. James Hall, * and its position was correctly described by Mr. Emmons, on the borders of Lake Champlain, where I examined it in 1842. It has there the character of a shallow water deposit, ripple-marked throughout a considerable thickness, and full of a species of Lingula. The flat valves of this shell, of a dark color, are so numerous, and so arranged in horizontal layers, as to play the part of mica, causing the rock to divide into laminae, as in some micaceous sandstones. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Geology: Treating of the Principles of the Science With Special Reference to American Geological History, for the Use of Colleges, Academies, and Schools of Science The Brief Synopsis of Appendix K. Is intended to facilitate the use of this Manual as a recitation-book. Lectures cannot well be wholly dispensed with in the instruction of Natural or Physical Science; but, with a work so full of illustrations as this, they may, with great advantage, be altogether subordinate to recitations, espe cially if the latter are accompanied with an exhibition of speci mens. Through the use of fine type for the details of the Science, the Manual is made to combine in one a small and a large book. The topics presented in the Synopsis are, with few exceptions, those of the former; and they are so prepared that each suggests a question. A cursory perusal of the details in the smaller type is, however, to be advised, as it will aid the student in acquiring precise ideas. Even in scientific schools it may be best that the student first go through the Manual with the Synopsis, and then, in a second course, take up the Palaeontology and Dynamics with greater thoroughness. Every Academy or other Institution teaching the Science should have, at least, a small collection of specimens. Even twenty-five dollars will purchase one (of Louis Seemann, Paris, 45 Rue St. Andre des-arts, or of Dr. A. Krantz, at Bonn on the Rhine) containing specimens of nearly all the mineral species mentioned in the Manual, and of the more common kinds of rocks, and another twenty-five dollars, a collection of fossils that would be of great service. Book Manual of Geology Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book Manual of Geology Vol 1 of 2 written by John Phillips and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Geology, Vol. 1 of 2: Theoretical and Practical From the days when Geology began to develop into an exact science, the student has been encountered by guides in the form of books, of two kinds; one promising to "lead him the sweetest and easiest way;" the other demonstrating that "of things good and beautiful, the Gods give nothing to men without great toil." The earlier writers gathered facts from too wide a field to demonstrate the steps of geological evolution. In the words of Professor Suess: "It is an exceedingly difficult task to teach a science well, which grows as rapidly as ours. The difficulty is not caused by the enormous yearly increase of new observations, because this may be overcome by patience, and by a diligent study of every good memoir. But I find that many of our best men go wrong in hanging to details, and losing sight of the grand features of science, or in proclaiming popular theories, and forgetting the painful arts of observation amidst the applause of a short-sighted crowd." The difficulty of teaching has also been the difficulty of text-book writing. And among the few works which have aspired to achieve a noble ideal, probably the most honoured place must be given to the Manual of Professor John Phillips. As the nephew of William Smith, he knew the history and growth of geological ideas as well as facts; and as a public teacher was not unmindful of the aspects of geology which are of vital importance in unfolding thought and imagination for the learner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Geology: Treating of the Principles of the Science With Special Reference to American Geological History The author has endeavored to bring the volume into as small a. Compass as consistent with a proper exhibition of the science; and, if some find its pages too numerous, he feels confident that quite as many would prefer greater fullness. The details introduced have seemed to be necessary, in order that the march of events should be appreciated. At the same time, the work has been adapted to the general reader and literary student, by the printing of the scientific details in finer type. The convenience of a literary class has been further provided for by adding to the Appendix a brief synopsis of the part in coarser type, in which each head is made to present a subject, or question, for special attention. And, as many may not be familiar with the science of Zoology, a review of the classification of animals, with numerous figures, has been inserted as an introduction to the Historical part of the Manual. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Geology: For Use in Mining Schools, Colleges, and Secondary Schools This volume comprises a systematic course of lectures carefully revised and expanded so as to cover the requirements in Geology as now defined for Engineering, Mining, and Agricultural Schools and Colleges. The first principles of Geology are, so to speak, the ABC of the science. They are mostly based on the simple processes that are now going on around us and when we know Man we are able to read the story of the earth wherever we may chance to find our selves. But the student who confines his observations and studies to his own immediate neighbourhood is in danger of acquiring a false sense of proportion, and may in time unconsciously come to believe that the things and processes he sees in his own terrain are typical of the whole globe. When he afterwards comes to travel further afield he may find himself compelled to modify his standards and renounce many of his early conceptions. The corrective of local prejudices and a narrow horizon is extensive reading and still more extensive travel. A word to the student. Make an early acquaintance with the facts of geology as presented in the field. Miss no chance of travel or exploration with the experienced geologist. Cultivate the faculty of exact observation, and be mindful not to form hasty conclusions. Remember that things are not always what they seem. Make extensive collections of rocks and fossils, and be careful to keep the fossils of each horizon apart. Take every care to preserve your fossils from injury. The dictum of the Hon. Walter Mantell that a fossil that is worth collecting is worth its paper is as true now as when made to the Author forty years ago, and applies equally well to rock specimens. Do not attempt to describe new species leave that to the specialist. Even when you have gained some note as a writer on geology, refrain from coining new terms.
